I gotta say, despite my ingrained hatred of all things Pronger-related, I am really enjoying the Flyers! Would be great to see them win tonight.

see penner I told you... in the Stanley Cup playoffs NOTHING is ever over til its over...

dude i have never seen a game or a series quite like that. Un-frickin-believable. Best flyer moment in my lifetime. This helps erase the 95 ecf, 97 finals and 2000 ecf. Just a great job all around by them

ummm, game 1 of the Hawks-Sharks series was amazing. Even though the Hawks got the win and the shots were about even, I'm a bit nervous. Niemi is awesome, but won't turn away 44 out of 45 everynight and it seemed like the Sharks had more high quality chances. Still, the Hawks played great in the third and got the win, should be a high-flying series.

YESS!!!!!

Capitals Insider - Caps sign Nicklas Backstrom to 10-year, $67M deal

The Capitals announced this morning that they've signed Nicklas Backstrom to a long-term contract, locking up the 22-year-old center for another 10 years alongside linemate Alex Ovechkin, who has 11 years left on his 13-year, $124 million contract. Backstrom's deal is worth $67 million.

More good news.

Capitals Insider - Marcus Johansson set to sign, too? (Updated)

I'm hoping for a flyers vs hawks finals. A couple of the best us hockey cities going at it would be awesme, but there's still a loing ways to go before it happens

yeah the state of Penn in general is pretty good hockey country... in fact you may be able to make the case it's football first, hockey second in that state... with Baseball and Basketball only gaining ground when the Phils/Sixers or Pirates are winning

I don't know, the Sharks do have a surprisingly great fan base...but not the potential of Chicago's.

Top Hockey States in the US are (according to me)

1) Minnesota
2) Michigan
3) Massachusetts
4) New York
5) Illinois
6) California
6) Wisconsin
7) New Jersey
8) Connecticut
9) Alaska
10) Pennsylvania

with North Dakota, Maine, and Texas just missing the cut. I'd be interested in what people think of the list (it comes strictly from my experiences growing up playing and watching hockey, absolutely no evidence whatsoever.)

Absolutely nothing but a general drive to define "best hockey states"... including everything...pro, college, youth, amateur, beer leagues, pond hockey, etc... It's completely subjective and if I made this list 10 times, it would probably turn out 10 different ways. Except for the top 3, those I'm reasonably certain about.

Well, the Sharks continue their home losing streak in Conference Finals games. I would be very happy to see that team get blown up after the season. If they get swept, I can't wait to watch the fan base go nuts.

On a happier note, the Manchester Monarchs tied their playoff series with the Hershey Bears! Kings prospects playing some good hockey now after falling behind in the series 0-2.

My only thing I might switch would be California and Alaska, but it would really depend on your list criteria. California does have a pretty decent fan base, but it is very localized around the respective teams' areas. As you venture out from particular fan centers (Anaheim, LA, San Jose) the concentration of fans becomes more and more sparse. Additionally, there isn't too much of a minor league system to speak of anymore. They are trying to spark a resurgence in places like Ontario where they have a brand spankin' new arena and are trying to get people excited about minor league hockey, but it is slow going.

Now take Alaska, they don't have the same population centers, but they do have some pretty fanatic fan bases with zero NHL interaction. Go to some of the local leagues in Alaska and you see passion that rivals any NHL arena around playoff time. Plus, if you add pond hockey in to the mix (which obviously, most Californians have never been exposed to) Alaska would trump many other states just because they can play outside so much later in the year than many states.

If you go based on NHL representation, California would be ahead of Alaska. But if you are just basing it on pure hockey passion, knowledge, and experience Alaska would be much higher than 9th. You are right, that you can do this list dozens of times and probably have dozens of different combinations.

You can't be serious right now. Do you even watch the nhl?

Every game. And I am from Pittsburgh and a die hard Pens fan. And yes I was just trying to get a rise out of you. My good buddy is a Flyers fan. I wished him good luck and told him if they win the cup I will buy him a shot and say welcome to the club, meaning a championship in his lifetime, not of all time.

Best of luck....

Please dont take whatever I said to my buddy as me rooting for the flyers. I despise that organization and fanbase. I was just trying to be a good sport.

You shall be judged by the most evil jury ever... made up of the most diabolical, resentful and flat out evil people in human history...

Benedict Arnold, John Wilkes Booth, Lizzy Borden, Blackbeard The Pirate, and the starting line-up of the 1976 Philadelphia Flyers.
