Brady did not sound very concerned about it on his radio show this morning. It would be hard to imagine a less scandalous "scandal," and if it wasn't the Patriots this would barely be a footnote.

Obviously the Patriots would have won....but how do you root for an organization that does shit like this over and over again?

Just understand that asking me this question would be like someone asking you how you can root for a program that killed a student assistant, covered up a rape by a player, helped another player hoax the media to get Heisman votes, and continues to have academic cheating scandals. I feel, as you would in that situation, that the outside media and other team's fans get the story wrong and overinflate its significance because my team is an easy target. As a Patriots fan, you get the same kind of irrational nonsense that you get as a ND fan. You learn to wear it like a badge of honor.

I see what you did there.

You're a Yankee fan, right? Does it bother you that other fans think the Yankees late 90's run was PED enhanced? It wouldn't bother me. It doesn't bother me that people say that about the Red Sox. Opposing fans are bitches. That is a truism of sports. Anyone that cares is wasting their time.

That game was disappointing, just how i feared it would go. It feels like Luck is falling victim to the same thing in Indy that Manning did. No running game, and no defense. And now Reggie will probably retire but even if not he's about done anyways, and i dont think TY at his size is a number one receiver on his own. We now need another receiver. Not to mention Luck is gonna sign a massive contract now, its hard to see us seriously contending for a Super Bowl

I've actually never heard that accusation. Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens are the only players on those teams with questionable backgrounds. The biggest thing I hear is that we bought our championships (which can maybe be said about the 2009 season but not the late 90s). Everyone was doing PEDs in the late 90s so no, it wouldn't bother me if someone said that.

It definitely doesn't bother me when people say we buy our team because it's 100% within the rules.

The Patriots do things that are clearly cheating (see: Spygate) and then a million other things that are borderline. I just wouldn't want to root for an organization like that.

Spygate was the NFL equivalent of speeding and was treated by the league like it was armed robbery. The media then ran with it. Everyone already hated the Patriots, so it was an easy narrative and made everyone feel better about why they couldn't beat NE. The reality is they broke a procedural rule and nobody has ever advanced a credible theory as to how it could have actually helped them do anything. (Note that you are permitted to film anything you want from the coach's box and are only restricted from filming from the sideline.)

The whole thing was kind of silly, but it is easier for most people to just lob it at the Patriots every time their team gets beat than to give it any real thought. Again, you'd say the exact same thing about the Declan Sullivan thing, right? The narrative that exists out there is inconsistent with what you actually know about it, but nobody cares enough to learn what you have and it is just easier for them to lob it at ND whenever they want to take a shot.

Personally, I was suprised they got to this point this year. As you said, no running game. They haven't had a stand out runner in a long time and have even beeen short on serviceable ones...plus went thru like 4 this year. The defense can be good in spurts, but not consistantly. The Colts got to where they were this year on Luck's back pretty much alone.

Luck will continue to grow into one of the best in the game (loved the what about this kid intro), but like Peyton, they will need to build up around him other key elements.

Nothing personal RI, but I don't recall quite as much infamy around the Steelers in their heyday(s), the 49'ers during their time on top, heck even the Bills even tho they tended to only get to lose the SB eleventy billion times like the Vikings of old.

Also, I know people who are angry at the Pats for making them have to cheer for "Pete the cheat"

They are more than welcome to root for the good guys!

Hard to root for the good guys when the only ones you see are wearing black hats.

Or as Tonto put it when he and the Lone Ranger were surrounded by Indi...(native americans)..."what you mean WE white man"

I get that you spin the narrative when it applies to your own team. I just don't see any other NFL team having to spin narratives so frequently.

How frequent is it, though? Once in 2007. Maybe not every team, but a significant number of teams, have had salary cap infractions, tampering charges, practices in violation of the CBA, PED violations, etc., etc.

Every time the Patriots are in the news it is somehow framed as evidence of conspiracy or underhandedness. It is what it is.

Honestly, what have they done? I understand the SpyGate thing but other than that what have they been "convicted" of doing? I really can't remember.

Can't believe we're talking abut this non-story. The Patriots DO NOT manage the footballs during the game, people. It's not like college. There's no way they could have deflated the balls since the balls are in the possession of the NFL people during the whole game after having been inspected by the officials.

Exactly, haters gonna hate. This is Brady's 6th Super Bowl appearance. Don't even care about the nonsense. It's weird how this stopped the Colts from tackling Blount right?

Quick show of hands...

Who on here has actually said that the Pats (allegedly) deflating the balls was the reason they beat the Colts yesterday?

You didn't hear? No payouts because the Patriots cheated because the balls didn't have enough air in them.

If the Patriots had fully inflated balls they would likely not have won the game! The weight discrepancy obviously assisted Blount in running for 148 yards and 3 touchdowns.

They could have played with a brick or a beachball and it would've been a blowout.

Wouldn't it make more sense for the league to require the referees to examine and document that the footballs meet regulations an hour before game time? MLB does (see 3.01 (c)):

Official Rules | MLB.com: Official info

Yet another reason MLB is superior to pro football.

Lol they do.

The home club shall have 36 balls for outdoor games and 24 for indoor games available for testing with a pressure gauge by the referee two hours prior to the starting time of the game to meet with League requirements. Twelve (12) new footballs, sealed in a special box and shipped by the manufacturer, will be opened in the officials’ locker room two hours prior to the starting time of the game. These balls are to be specially marked with the letter "k" and used exclusively for the kicking game.
