Parker would be underwhelming on paper, but honestly not sure how he can be judged by what happened at WVU. Neal Brown called the plays for most of those two seasons. Parker called the plays for 6 games to end 2021 and they went 4-2 and averaged 27/game. Prior to that, they averaged 20.8/game. (I’m excluding their game against Long Island where they won 66-0). His first season at WVU in 2020 (not as a playcaller) the offense averaged ~90 yards more per game than in 2019. Freeman worked with him and wanted him here. He was gameplanning closely with Rees and clearly based on the pics we saw of Ludwig it seems like he’s been part of the OC process and probably was going be the “#2” guy here next season if we had landed Ludwig.

Again, underwhelming on paper but if he’s the OC I’m not automatically writing him off. Not sure he can at all fairly he judged by his time at WVU.
I keep hearing this, but Brown was also going to demote him before he left to come here. If he was doing so good, why would Brown demote him and why would he accept a TE job instead?

This is what being cheap gets you in college football in 2023.

Pay the fucking buyouts, get your fucking guy and shut the fuck up
It's kind of what sports is now really. From the Mets in New York to Chelsea FC in London, someone out there is going to pay up and get the guys they want. It doesn't guarantee you success, but it certainly puts you in better position as opposed to pinching pennies.

Dabo found it out at Clemson when his two big boys left. He gave Streeter a year and said screw it. They paid up and got Garrett Riley.

NO idea if Ludwig is worth all that money but Freeman thought so. It would have been on him if it didn't work out.

Yes which is a nice title. Longo is OC and QBs Coach.

It’s more accurate to view this as he was UCs QBs Coach, got a shot at OC, wasn’t good, and is now our QB Coach. That’s fine. It is also clear though he wasn’t going to coach QBs at his next stop till this.
Yes but he played QB in college and the pros and has been OC, QB coach, RB coach and recruiting coordinator at the college level so he does have some decent experience to be a QB coach.

Well, Phil Longo is the guy who displaced him. That doesn't necessarily tell us Fickell was unhappy with Guidugli.

Not only is he destroying the basketball program, he's trying to take down football with him

Jack needs to retire. He allowed the basketball program to fail miserably. And now the football money is paying the retirement buyout for the basketball ball coach. What a terrible leader.

So if he did a terrible job as an OC at his last stop, that just means he's the OC in waiting here.

If MF hires Gino and promotes Parker, this is like goddamn Burnt Ends sticking with Paul Longo and bringing in his buddy Van Gorder.

I doubt MF will hire an OL coach to be the OC. So my prediction is either Parker as OC or Parker and Gino get co-coordinator title, or ____ game coordinator titles.

MF was never a head coach. Hiring his buddies, who he doesn't have too many of since he's so young, reeks of him not really knowing what to do, so he just hires people he's comfortable with.

I think we’ve let recent events shift our baseline here. Gino I’m sure is a fine QB Coach. But just because he’s not as bad at his job as we think Parker could be as OC doesn’t mean I’m satisfied with just taking the UC QB Coach here. ND should want the Longo, the Streeters of the world. Not settle for who is below them.

We would have crucified BK for this.

ISD did say that Brey leaving is causing a crunch in available cash (but this is stupid)
Again...why can't they reach out to boosters? Is ND the only school that doesn't do this?

I thought i read a report or a post here that referenced Boosters being irate they weren't at least asked if they'd fund a buyout for Ludwig.

Absolutely!

Looks like The Driskell's theory may be coming true. MF just gonna hire dudes he knows and hope it works out. Burnt Ends at least had about 20 years experience as not only a head coach, but mostly winning and successful years. MF went 9-4 and lost to Marshall and Stanford. He spent about 3 minutes going through the 8 coaches in his rolodex that he knows.

Yeah I would be good with Gino and yurcich but not Gino and Parker

2 people not good enough for the job don’t equal one that is good enough, just like having two average qbs doesn’t add up to make a great qb

This is a genuine question, but is it normal to hire lower level assistants first? Swarbrick seems to love to do this - ie Tommy before Marcus, and now Gino before any OC. Anyone with knowledge of this process know if this is normal at all?

In the end there isn’t much to research, Gino developed two QBs. Ridder went very well. Bryant didn’t really.

I mean, Brian Kelly went 8-5 his first year, lost to Tulsa and Navy. Also had history of hiring his buddies from CMU and GVSU and UC. And even after all those years of experience, he hired Brian VanGorder.

We bashed Kelly for this and he had been a head coach.
