A little wild to me reading the hate on Leftwich. That bucs offense had alot of issues beyond the play calling.

The names are interesting, and maybe it would have been crickets for Kelly, but it sure seems crazy in hindsight that Rees got the job without a National search last time, if these are the quality of candidates interested.

To be clear I like(d) Rees, just find this interesting.

Lets be real, the OC job is way more attractive in '23 than it was in '20 or any other time since BK first was coach. There aren't gaping holes at WR nor QB, the OL is pretty stout, and there's real playmakers at RB. Really the biggest question mark is TE, which has never really been an issue for ND...plus I like Raridon and Evans. It'll be one of the most experienced offenses in college football this year. Rees and Freeman have setup the next guy for easy success.

And you don't have to work for a prick like Kelly who insists on running "his" offense. Kelly would never hire someone who could challenge him.

Anyone know what the situation is in Arizona? They have an OC listed and also a passing game coordinator/QB coach on staff. Whoever is responsible I really like what they did with Jayden de Laura this season.

Jimmie Dougherty hasn't come up much. I'm not sure it's the move anyone will make but I think he's a home run hire and future star. Has had great QB / Coaching mentorship with Harbaugh, Sark, Chip Kelly & Jedd Fisch... not bad huh? He's been a PCG/OC since he moved up at San Diego after Harbuagh went to Stanford. To top it off, his Dad's a HOF HS coach from the IL side of StL.

deLaura and those WR's were fun to watch. Besides landing de Laura from the portal he signed Noah Fifita from Servite and Braden Dorman who Tommy flirted with before passing. I like him a lot.

I’m so confused. I feel like I’m reading Circa’s posts tonight with your comments. Please put me out of my misery in plain english? 😂

Quinn signed both Kelce's at Cincy and changed them from QB to TE and RB to OG... then Butch Jones moved Jason to OC his Sr year.

I was in the Joe Moorehead camp, but the more I read about Brian Johnson I think he is my guy. That would be a home run hire in my opinion.

I'm not sure on home run, but it may be the best available. He's bounced around as QB coach and OC at a variety of places the last 12-13 years, 7 different teams. Among the 4 seasons he was OC he slightly improved Utah's offense from 75th in PPG to 66th. His one year at Houston they were 65th. However in his last year as an OC while at Florida they were 13th in the country scoring almost 40 points a game. That was with Kyle Trask at QB and passing for 4,300 yards. By all accounts he's helped develop Jalen Hurts with the Eagles quite a bit over the last two seasons, getting him to be a right read kind of QB.

So, hopefully we get the Florida version of Johnson if he ends up being the guy. On the plus side he can double as QB Coach as Rees did and he would be a very attractive hire for the big time QB recruits coming in. On the downside with this stacked and experienced roster I doubt we'll keep him for more than a year or two, especially how much he's bounced around in his career. He'll probably be no more than a rental coach if this offense explodes as expected. If it means a legit chance at the Playoffs and a championship I'm okay with that.

Not saying this is the case, but given the choice between Leftwich or Johnson, who do you prefer?

I think Freeman could be handling this a certain way. Do you bring in a guy for one year to tailor the offense around Hartman to make him happy with the idea that coach will be looking to move on after this year. Then start all over again? Maybe that's the reason why NFL guys are intrigued?

Seems risky for such a green HC who's yet to establish himself. I hope, if anything, he's pushing for the opposite - someone willing to give him a couple of years before bouncing.

Right now for me it would be Johnson, the Utah guy or Moorehead.
These are my top three, as well. However, I completely trust the staff with this hire. One million percent. They know much better than I do what fits for their program. They will take into account play calling, philosophy, personality, recruiting prowess, etc, etc, etc. They could hire somebody I have never heard of and I will trust them. They will do what they think is best for the program. And they sure as heck know what that is, better than me; just some high school coach typing at his keyboard. Take Stuckey, for instance. Much of the board was set on other candidates above him. IMO, he has been outstanding, and I am glad we have him. The coaching staff knows what they want and what the program needs. It is entertaining, and I am appreciative, to read all the speculation. However, I am just enjoying watching the process and will be happy to read about the coach ND decides is best moving forward.

I agree I would rather bring in a young up and coming coach that's a solid recruiter. I do think the offense at times this year was predictable. Pyne would always look for Mayer and force it. I want someone whose gonna come in a spread the ball around. Get Styles out in space and let him fly, take some deep shots but still balance it out with our RB's. Get the Rb's more involved in the passing game.

I doubt MF is looking for a one year rental. Hard to establish continuity on and off the field if you're doing this. Maybe NFL guys are interested because of MF? He appears to be able to sell recruits, so why not NFL coaches?

If the above tweet is accurate, we won't know who our guy is until late next week.

Has Johnson ever called plays? The snippets I have found about him indicate he has not at any point?

We're in a bit of a funny spot when it comes to one-year-and-bounce vs. a longer-term hire.
Our offense next year looks very talented and experienced. So you could have a very high-performing unit in '23 that makes the OC look like a genius, so much that he has good job offers. But there will be some significant departures after next season (Hartman, probably one/both of Estime/Diggs, Tyree, potentially one/both tackles, etc.).
That rebuild in '24 would seem to call for someone who you're confident is going to be here multiple years, to provide some consistency especially to Buchner and Minchey so they're not learning a new system as one of them steps into the starting QB job.

He did for Utah, Houston and Florida I believe
The majority of NY Jets related articles I've read about him since he was connected to that OC job was that he "called some plays" at Florida. Otherwise he was OC at all of those but wasn't necessarily calling plays.

His work with QBs is obviously his strength. Trask and Jalen Hurts are testament to that.
