So Chip all over again?
Could wind up as a similar situation, yes.
Per Pete, on the II pod, said that play calling experience is a high priority for the hiring. That might narrow it down a bit. I’m not sure if someone like Brian Johnson has experience calling plays.
  • Utah (2010–2011)
    Quarterbacks coach
  • Utah (2012–2013)
    Offensive coordinator & quarterbacks coach
  • Mississippi State (2014–2016)
    Quarterbacks coach
  • Houston (2017)
    Offensive coordinator & quarterbacks coach
  • Florida (2018–2019)
    Quarterbacks coach
  • Florida (2020)
    Offensive coordinator & quarterbacks coach
  • Philadelphia Eagles (2021–present)
    Quarterbacks coach
Did he actually call plays at any of these is the question. It doesn't sound like he has to this point and has been OC in name only. As a QB coach, however, he's been great and that's what is getting him interviews.

If the current Eagles OC gets an HC job, Johnson will stay in Philly from the sounds of things. Only Arizona and Indy remain open.

When Arians left Arizona Leftwich’s offense sucked the next year and history repeated itself this year. Doesn’t take a genius to figure out that without Arians Leftwich has sucked.

I have two friends that worked for him at Toledo (one a coordinator) that said he treats people like absolute garbage. He's been described as an arrogant prick to me by many.
Sounds like he’s got the fire. He sounds perfect.

I know I sound like a broken record but I hope MF at least has a phone convo vet with Nagle - He called plays last year during Tulane's epic turnaround season and in that role, HE ALSO beat USC! I thought I read he at least had a phone convo with Saban as well which I guess implies he's open to hearing about the right team OC openings.

Just gotta say at the end of the day it's about moe's and joe's and not x's and o's. our success next year will ultimately ride on the ability of the guys on the field to get it done, so I'm not too stressed about this search.

While I agree that next year will be about Moe's and Joe's, I come to a completely different conclusion. We already have those guys so the coaching of those guys and the play calling will be the differentiator. If we were worried about Moe's and Joe's for 2024 or 2025 then maybe we take recruiting efforts into account. But, if we're trying to win big now. I think it's all the more reason to focus on getting a guy who can coach and call plays, on Day 1. And, places even more importance on this hire.

sure but we're probably not going to get anyone too sexy at this point. honestly i just need coach marcus to get us back to the kelly standard of AP top 10 finishes and double-digit wins next year and then I'll place all my trust in him.

Well, I don't really know what you mean by sexy so instead of going back and forth on who is or is not sexy, I think the general point to make is there is a very real chance that we can get a very good coach to be ND's next OC and next years roster and winning should be the top priority with that hire, IMO. Therefore increasing the importance on factors like playcalling and coaching versus recruiting. I care very little about the recruiting chops of this OC hire.

I'll prolly regret saying this, but I think MFMF is smart enough by now to realize that Leftwich rode the coat tail of Tom and Arians and was never a good play caller.

Yep. We need a good play caller far more than we need a recruiter here. Winning/running a good offense will keep Carr in the fold. Stuckey, DMC and Freeman can take of the rest.

Has the start of spring ball been announced yet? I would think unfortunately, that will accelerate the timeline, which could hinder who we decide to bring in.
Not yet for ND but today the first D1 team kicked off spring ball - Hawaii :))

Here is where I have an issue with Leftwich: With Arians gone, with all the injuries from preseason to the OL (their center was done for the season with a knee injury among them), Leftwich didn't seem to adjust. He just kept doing the same shit over and over each week. They would run on first and second down for minimal gains putting Brady into 3rd and long situations more often than not. With now Gronkowski and a defensive head coach there not able to guide him the way Arians would have.

Leftwich was one piece of Tampa's equation last year as to why things went bad. There were other moving parts.

He is getting a second interview with the Ravens I believe and I question his desire to coach in college anyway. I don't think he's a candidate for ND OC to begin with, so on it goes.

Leftwich doesn't make sense to me when compared to guys like Brian Johnson, Ludwig, and Moorhead. The latter three have all called a lot of games at the college level and have experience recruiting and developing college athletes.

Maybe ND can look at the Kansas OC. Their offense was very creative and played several games with a backup QB and still put up points.

Why did Moorhead and Gattis both become less impressive while working under Mario Cristobal? That just seems way too coincidental.

Did Byron Leftwich's name get mentioned for any other reason than that he's an OC looking for a job, and ND needs to hire an OC? Or is there some connection or chance that the rest of us don't know about?

One thing is for sure, whoever takes over should be expected to come out strong out of the gate. He's getting one of the most experienced offenses in college football this year with a lot of talent. This is the most attractive the ND OC position has been in over a decade.

Cover 3 pod has mentioned this. Also, why did Herbert look pedestrian in college then great in the NFL

I would have to assume that Gattis is really somewhere between 2021 Broyles Winner and 2022 fired Miami OC. The guy can recruit. He's worked for Saban. He seemed to really do well under Franklin, like Moorhead did, at PSU.
