seriously 46 is pretty young to retire. I know he's had some healthy buyouts to live off of and prolly a decent coaching salary, but I'd think he'd want to maybe do something.

JB moved to South Bend, his wife works at ND now. I don't think this is that big of a coup. I also think, this is a new staff, and the new staff will have their favs to leak info too. Loy boy and Prister may have burned some bridges and are on the outside looking in.

Dawg fans are a special breed, man. Anyone that doesn't share their devotion is view skeptically.

They probably struggle with the idea that a coach would step away from that program at its peak, only to turn around and take a different job a year later.

Sounds like he was still around the program quite a bit. Tailgating every Saturday. Plays golf everyday with current coaches and former players. Apparently one of the good ol boys.

Jeff Quinn? More like HH retiring and then announces he’s going to coach at LSU. It would just ruffle some peoples feathers.

Don't know if you're kidding or not, but while ND has been very good at the OL position lately, UGA is right there with them.

Yeah, UGA has been great. But I’ll take Notre Dame and their OL success this century. Their success in the NFL further proves that. Joe Alt is the best o-lineman in the country and could be a top 5 pick next year.

Doubt if he’s Catholic. Really aren’t any other private schools in SB besides them. Penn school district is separate from SB and considered good, probably at least as good as what he’s looking at in Athens.
Not sure how old his kids are but getting into ND might be part of the pitch.

Highly doubt if a guy like this is going to be an OLine coach for long however

I suspect his kids are already in private schools if they’re in the south so even if they’re not Catholic (assuming it’s not a prerequisite?), they’d probably be open to one of the local Catholic schools.

To your last point, I always look at that as a positive. If he’s wanting to climb back up the ladder, he’ll have to perform well as the OL coach meaning if he leaves ND (or whatever school hires him), it’ll be b/c he did well in the OL room & on the recruiting trail.

Wasn’t being harsh, just stating possible reasoning for their give a dam! Retirement is retirement, regardless of age, or that’s the way I see it. Granted it is different in football or so it seems. I’d be irritated if one my favorites left only to return elsewhere. It’s a feeling of confusion or betrayal maybe, more than likely because he’s considering ND (up north).

Matt Luke could also be looking at the job stability at ND. He could very conceivably be here the next 7 seasons and then both his kids will be out of the house. Obviously a lot is contingent on what happens with Marcus Freeman going forward as a coach but the OLine coaching job at ND screams stability and with how good he is he could stay there until his kids are out of the house and that could be a big draw

I absolutely think the Lukes are looking at it this way. And I absolutely believe MF is selling them on that. It's a good point.

The only issue with it is I think Matt Luke has enough cache that this is the case wherever he decides to go. Pretty much any school and coach would take him on staff, for as long as he wants to be there. I really hope he chooses ND. I think his family is weighing the fact that wherever he decides to go, it will be for the next 5-10 years, and is this where we want to be.

I've been thinking recently how ND handles NIL seems like it might work out in the end as kids realize that big payday may just be a farce at other schools promising giant bags, and ND actually takes care of their athletes.

I can see how that might look attractive to a coach who doesn't want to deal with bag chasers.

FWIW, Harry didnt do a great deal of recruiting.

MF is all about recruiting, so I doubt he would try to sell a coach on the fact that he wouldnt have to recruit hard. But the fact remains that Luke could put in an average amount of effort on the trail and still be an improvement over Harry.

This. Our Oline history sells itself. Harry got by. Picked his guys. Was usually done by September. Just a minimal amount of recruiting from Luke would suffice.
