New Continental Congress

I propose that the right honorable posters of IE declare their intention to begin a new thread (outside of the laborious and long-winded, cyclical thread "Just Curious...") wherein all who gather shall discuss the subject of a New American Continental Congress. This New Continental Congress shall convene, initially, to establish a set of grievances against the citizens and perpetrated by the current government of these united States, with the purpose of at some point generating a solution to the current state of affairs.

All of those interested sign in and no political affiliations are required (as a matter of fact please keep your political leanings to yourself right now, although most of us know already). I will leave the sign in open for a week starting today 5/15/13. If you are are not signed in by 5/22/13, you must participate from the outside. No lobbying allowed at this point.

I'm walking to my car on my way home from work. Using a smart phone. Can someone cut and paste my post on instant runoff style voting?

We will begin the debate once people have a chance to join. I suggest compiling your own list of grievances and we will get to them once the caucusing begins. We are gonna take this nice and slow, and logical (but not always expedient). You can PM me and I will add names as they come in until the deadline.

I'm in, but I'm not wearing a powdered wig and waistcoat. That's a deal-breaker.

Just want to say I think this is a good idea.

Through all our bickering we haven't really talked much about what the role of government should be. What are appropriate checks and balances? What should be federal responsibilities and what should be left to the states?

I think this could lead to good debate.

I think that they got everything just about right, except women and slavery.

So ... as a "Continental" Congress are residents of Puerto Rico, Guam, Hawaii, American Samoa, the US Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands excluded? What about IE brethren in Syria, Ireland, etc.?

Do barrier islands count?

I will accept it, as I feel all perspectives are valuable, and I clearly stated "honorable IE" posters. Not sure what you mean by barrier islands?

Interesting you mentioned Puerto Rico.

Pedro Pierluisi Files Puerto Rico Statehood Legislation Seeking Up Or Down Vote

For a while the only thing holding Puerto Rico from becoming a state was Puerto Rico. Now that they are willing but I don't think they will get the votes, at least not with a Republican majority in the House. Conventional wisdom says that is means 2 more Democrat Senate seats. Reality wise it really shouldn't be about that but both parties always look at things from a political angle.

By the way Washington DC should get a seat in the House of Representives. They essentially have the same beef as the colonnist did which was having taxation without representation. It would be wrong to give them 2 Senate seats but they should get 1-2 seats in the House. DC is heavily Democrat but it is not like adding 1 or 2 seats in a 435 seat House is going to totally tilt the balance of power. If they ever did give DC representation I would prefer just a new seat and not take away a seat from another state.

I often forget that posts are not the face-to-face conversations that I create in my head. Clues such as tone and facial expressions get lost in the cyber translation. I eschew italics to denote sarcasm and hope that style, structure and familiarity suffice.

I was being facetiously fatuous. I mean, I mean, I mean ... barrier islands, something familiar to Carolinians, et al., aren't directly connected to the continent but for bridges and ferries.

I apologize for my failed attempt at humor.

Come one, come all! Let the games begin!

I thought so, but our barrier islands are part of the city/state/county level. This is serious shits here dshans. Are you in? Will you represent the land of 10,000 lakes?

I will represent the land of misfits.
Done.

I once worked for a wastewater treatment plant and had the job of representing the land of "misflushed toys." I had quite the collection. You'd be surprised the size of toys that make it to the plant.

I don't represent anyone or anything but my own (twisted?) self.

I was born in Manhattan, lived six years on Lung Aye-Lund, "grew up" in Flaw-ri-duh, spent four years in Indiana at a small, private university and landed in Minnesota in '78, where I felt comfortable. Well ... the waters don't taste like wine ,the winters could be a tad shorter and less severe, but the social and political climate suited my bones.

If acceptable, I'm in. I think.

Too much cogitation these days makes me long for a nap.

For the sake of full disclosure, if this comes down to elections, I inhaled and more than once.

If it comes down to elections it is all about making deals. Got to give a little to get a little its always been that way. Except when Obama gives a little the Republicans walk out of the room.

Still want to know how Clinton managed smoke without inhaling. He must have some special evolutionary mechanism close off his trachea.

I can't believe a smart guy like Clinton could say something that dumb.

My fellow Americans,

For those members that don't care to join in, I'd love the opportunity to represent your interests in our IE congress. Just send me your concerns and I will go to battle for your rights and interests. While I consider myself a man of modest means, politics as you well know is an expensive endeavor, as such I have begun accepting contributions to cover the ever rising costs of protecting our freedom. You can further your causes and help to insure our future by generously donating to me through our IE vbank system. Remember the more you contribute, the harder I can fight FOR YOU!

Sincerely, BobD

This message was sent to you by the BobD he's for ME 2013 committee.

I'm BobD and I approved this message.
