Foremost, I wasn't using "educational experience" to put one down or brag. Some fans/alums - and please note, I am
not one of these types - maintain that you must have attended/graduated from said university to be a fan or a "true fan." I think that's absurd, and I know many, many people that didn't attend the university that they openly root for. Just from a numbers standpoint, I'd submit that 3/4, maybe more, of the Notre Dame fans didn't attend the university. My point with that was simply that you do not have to attend the school in order to pull for them.
In regard to Diggs, I have said this ad nauseum. I went to LSU. I grew up a LSU fan
and I also pulled for Notre Dame. I've seen Notre Dame play 4 times, all 4 times against LSU (1997 in Baton Rouge, 1997 in Shreveport, LA for the Independence Bowl, 2006 in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl, and 2014 in Nashville for the Music City Bowl). All 4 times, I openly cheered and pulled for LSU; however, the losses (at least in 2014 as I was fairly young in '97) didn't sting as bad as others. However, please note that if Notre Dame isn't playing LSU (in which, they rarely do), I pull for Notre Dame every single time. So, yes, I consider myself a fan of Notre Dame.
Allow me to expound further. I'm in my early 30s. Growing up (and I'm sure many of you remember) we didn't have access to every single game like we do now. LSU wasn't very good; yet, I could always count on getting the LSU games if we didn't attend them - whether Tiger Vision PPV, Jefferson Pilot Sports, or late night ESPN 2 with Ron Franklin (RIP) leading the broadcast.
For other games, I can vividly remember scouring the internet the week prior to Saturdays to see the TV map to see which games we were going to get. Just as an example, would I be in the zone for the Nebraska vs. Texas game which I wanted to watch, or would I be unlucky and we'd be getting FSU vs. Clemson.
That said, Notre Dame, just like the Cubs and WGN, was the one thing I could always count on getting were the Notre Dame games on NBC. Notre Dame, like the Dallas Cowboys or New York Yankees, are a polarizing team. You all know that. People either love them or they hate them. Now, to no surprise, Louisiana has a plethora of Catholics that tend to root for them (you'll see plenty of ND flags throughout New Orleans, or go have a drink at Molly's at the Market, and you'll spot Notre Dame pictures here and there). However, the overwhelming majority, if not all, of the people that I personally knew, hated them. I, on the other hand, did not. I loved them. Just like the LSU games, I always watched tons of their games and pulled for them. Just as an example, adolescent me can remember like yesterday:
- Jarious Jackson missing the f'ing handoff inside Purdue's 5-yard line in 1999.
- The great comeback win against USC in 1999.
- Julis Jones and Joey Getherall taking kick offs and punt returns to the house against #1 Nebraska in South Bend (that OT loss with Crouch's TD run was tough to stomach).
- Throwing my cap across the room when Charles Rogers (Michigan State) made one of the most ridiculous TD catches that I've ever seen, then, jumping up and down and cheering like a lunatic when Arnaz Battle (Louisiana) caught that slant pass and took it approximately 60 yard or so for the TD-win.
- I can go on and on....
So, yes, I have such a "soft-spot" for Notre Dame. In addition, I consider myself enough of a fan to take a few days off of work, drop over $2,000.00+ f'ing dollars on a mediocre hotel across from the stadium/Irish Green to attend my first ever Notre Dame game in South Bend this year. I've been wanting to go since I can remember, so I see it as nothing but money well spent.
Circling back to Diggs, again, I'm in my 30's, wife, kids, mortgage, and professional degree. I don't "troll." I also don't think my post consisting of, "Welcome back home, Logan!!! Boot up! (I still hate Rummel though)" and embedding a Twitter picture equates to "trolling." Had I created a new, separate thread and spewing language such as: "Congrats Logan! Diggs wanted to play for a superior team and superior conference" or "Diggs wants to play on a real offense and for a real coach, BK" would certainly be egregious and would equate to "trolling." As mentioned, the kid purportedly was homesick, and Diggs may have wanted to go home. As a LSU guy, am I happy that he chose us instead of South Carolina, Ole Miss, etc.? Of course. I think he'll be our best back. Would I have been upset if he stayed at Notre Dame? Of course not. If I was his father, I would have encouraged him to stay. Was I upset that Antonio Carter selected Notre Dame over LSU? Of course not. If not LSU, I want the best of the best to go to Notre Dame. Again, I hope he absolutely crushes it there. He seemed like a tremendous guy from the IB interview that I listened to.
Lastly, with great thoroughness, you've made it clear that you don't like LSU. Neat. Frankly, I couldn't care less if you dislike LSU, as I don't expect you (or anyone on this board) to, and I'm not here to promote that. That said, Tigerdroppings, like many other message boards, has a notable amount of opposing teams' fans. My apologies for not knowing the secret handshake, but a review of my posts are overwhelming centered around ND and are most, if not all, positive.
