New players and starters may or may not contibute to team
statistics. Unfortunately, what is measurable now are the
"lost" statistics of departed players.

On the positive side, our opponents suffer the same type
of loss statistics, so the playing field is more level
than implied. Check Michigan on the link, it will make
you happy.

Offense minus:
5 Starters
30% linemen game starts
79% running back rushing yds
83% quarterback passing yds
52% wide receiver receiving yds

Defense minus:
3 Starters
40% overall tackling numbers
22% linemen tackling numbers
32% Linebacker tackling numbers
32% Defensive backs tackling nos

Thanks to the Keeper's site for the info...Tom

I'd like to see the percentage lost between 2011 and 2012, just to get an idea about how much this stuff actually matters.

Meh, luckily statistics don't take the field.

These kind of stats ("Team X lost such-and-such production from last year") are pretty useless in college sports. You turn over about a quarter of the roster every year. Very rarely does a team bring back all of its production from one year to the next. Good programs replenish their roster through consistent recruiting and replace the lost production with players just as good or better. It remains to be seen what the players that will be asked to contribute are able to contribute, but I wouldn't be shocked if last year's production is matched or exceeded based on increased contributions from improved returning players and the contributions of new contributors.

Personally, I like the fact that everyone on the team (including the coaches) are saying that it the most competitive, fast, and talented camp they have been part of since they have been at ND. Your preparation is usually what puts you in a situation of winning on saturdays. I feel really good about this group.

This.

Those that left were a big part of our last seasons success, but it wasn't only because of them. College football (all college sports) replenish yearly. You usually only see a big fall for a team when the recruiting or player development isn't there, we have both. Alabama loses players every year and they seem to be doing just fine. As we will be also.

Yup. This is pretty much all that matters, coupled with the infusion of the most talented freshman class in the last 15 years.

Look at how much Experience ND has. I dont think they go 12-0 again, but thats simply bc its not practical to go 12-0 back 2 back years. I mean hell Bama didnt even do that.

Last year ND fed off momentum, Manti's situation, being called out preseason, and BK got them into the mindset. None of them had played in a meaningful game in their careers that the MSU game was. Then they had Michigan in a massive game. Then Oklahoma came...then Pitt with the adversity and guys had to grow. Then obviously the usc game was pressure packed to a level that a lot of ND fans hadn't experienced in 25 years or never experienced as FANS. lol.

Now they have 3 classes that have went through all that. 3 classes that KNOW what it takes to get to that level and a freshman class that is talented from top to bottom. I think those "dropping" numbers are sh*t.

The beauty of college football is that pre-season stat dumps like this are basically meaningless. If last year didn't show that, I don't know what does. Everybody on the roster, and every team in the game, is essentially a week-to-week work in progress. You go try to win with the 85 guys you've got and they either stand up or they don't.
Either way you don't really know until the games start, which blessedly will be soon.

We are bound to face other teams that have significant losses too. In fact that's the case every week, every year.

Game statistics and game scoring go hand in hand. The num-
bers are objective. They tell what has to be replaced in
order to maintain the high performance level.

I agree that the talent is now there. If it produces, it
should be a very good year...Tom

Boiler......ummmm hadn't thought of that.

I know, there's so many factors that go into how a loss occurs, it's easy to lose sight of how to get there. If you get confused, think of this example (i think it illustrates my point perfectly) - if ND scores 20 points, but their opponent scores 28 points, then there is no way ND would win that game.

What if we score 28 but they score more than that?

Can we get a graphic or a chart in this thread?

I hope this helps everyone. As far as I can tell in this situation there is no way we can win. Boiler if you would like to weigh in and clear this up, that would be great.

Hopelessly lost. If 28 is more valuable than 20 why is 20 gold?

I'll have to commission a study to confirm the result you are implying with that graph, but at a glance, I think you may be on to something.

I'm beginning to think our data sample is too small, maybe we should look at several different outcomes like 14-20 or 35-17. I wouldn't know where to start though.
