Why doesn't the ND band travel to all the way games? I hate turning on usc games and seeing their band at every game with their 1 tune.

ND is the 12th richest school in the country they shouldn't need our 100 dollars to send the band. We spend 1000's in other merchandise

I think you may be underestimating the sheer cost of sending the band to distant away games. They travel to regional games like any other band and go to special away games.

It's something like 250 hotel rooms for a night or two, plus 450-500 plane tickets (depending on staff travel), plus a per diem for each band member, plus travel for the instruments many of which also require their own seats (like Tubas). It would be nice to have them travel to every game, but that's just not feasible. ND is wealthy, but it doesn't have infinite money.

What do you think it costs for the band to travel across the country?

Having the band at road games would be nice, but the cost would be so high. They could definitely put that money to better use.

I'd volunteer my time if they'd like to equip me with an awesome travelling DJ set up to fill in for the band on road games. One person with an incredible sound system would be much more cost effective. :)

I don't know about ND, but I used to work at the Columbus International Airport, and the tOSU band flew on a chartered aircraft. It was a regular Southwest Airlines plane, but specially chartered for the band and other University staffers whose duties took them to away games. I would imagine that other major schools do something very similar, if not exactly the same.

OSU's band is much smaller than ND's, with TBDBITL comprising only 225 members. Also, a handful of away games are affordable, but OSU doesn't play distance like ND. A lot cheaper to ship a band up Ann Arbor for a day than out to LA for a weekend.

ND does make use of charters but there is still 450 bodies and equipment to transport, lodge, and feed.

I also don't know who pays for their tickets, ND or the host school. But if their sitting in seats somebody is footing the bill. 400 or 450 tickets represents a sizeable piece of change. Or do you fly them to L.A. and have them stand in the parking lot until halftime then send them back to their hotels? A lot of expense for a 10-15 minute halftime segment.

About a decade ago or so thee was a controversy when AD White announced the band was not traveling to a bowl game. There was a loud uproar (particularly from band members and family) about not going. The AD commented that it cost, at that time, $1 million in total expenditures for the band and support staff to travel to an away game.

I can recall many games in the L.A. Coliseum going back to Ara's Era where the ND band director and the ND Club (Orange Co, I believe) selected a local Catholic HS marching band to represent UND at the game.

That's a really cool idea that I would totally support in the modern era. ND needs a new music building. Save some money for that and get some sweet publicity at the same time. Win win.

Am I missing something? What game has the band not been there for this year? Were they at the Navy game?

The only time I've heard of keeping the band away from road games have been in special situations like Michigan State after the 2010 overtime game in which some members got hurt and Thanksgiving break (aka no trip to Stanford and USC).

Only away game they were at was fsu, they were also at the shamrock series game. But it's very annoying to hear visiting teams play there fight songs (mainly usc) in our stadium

That does bother me. I have been to 3 ND games, and the band was only at 1 of them. I attended GT in '06, Stanford last year and FSU this year.

I know I'm in the minority, but with the money that the football team generates, it can afford 5 away games. If they want to go to ask for money from some of the big donors that's fine, but donation drives for something like this irritate me. I'd be fine if they were selling something. Hell, sell some autograph footballs from the coaches or players. Would that be a violation since it's for charity? I'd give a Benjamin for a BK signed ball. $10 cost, $5 shipping, $85 profit...

The band operates financially independent from the university. Selling signed footballs wouldn't be a bad idea, but I bet there's a reason they don't do that.

Aren't they part of the "annual fund" though?

You can't expect them to travel to every game, but I think they do make a few away games each year.

They do. IIRC, usually they go to games w/in a reasonable drive (Michigan, Purdue, MSU) and one other, usually a big game like FSU. And I'm pretty sure they hit the Shamrock game. So that's really three road trips out of six non-home games a year. They don't do USC/Stanford because it's Thanksgiving.
Did they stop with the local HS band at the USC game? I thought they still did that, but I guess I didn't pay much attention last time we were out there, what with the national championship game on the line and all.
Everybody sends their band to our place, because it's Notre Dame. Whatever. Unless you're sitting right in front of them (as I was for USC a couple of years back) you barely notice.
