No. 1 Irish Advance to Finals with 82-64 win over Drake
Ogunbowale and Young combine for 55 points

VANCOUVER – The No. 1 Notre Dame women's basketball team handed Drake its first loss of the season on Friday, advancing to the championship game of the Vancouver Showcase. The Fighting Irish (5-0) were powered by Arike Ogunbowale and Jackie Young, as the duo scored a combined 55 points against the Bulldogs (5-1).

"Really pleased with the win," Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said. "We had three starters out, so to come in with a lot of different lineups, I thought we played pretty well."

How It Happened
Notre Dame scored eight of its first 10 points in the paint and got out to a quick 10-4 lead. Drake retaliated with a 7-0 run over the next 1:11 to take their first lead of the game. Later, an Ogunbowale buzzer beater would tie the score at 17-all, ending the first quarter.

Notre Dame and Drake continued to trade shots in the first five minutes of the second quarter. Up 29-28 at the 4:56 mark, the Irish earned some separation, ending the half on a 15-3 run to extend their lead to 44-31 at the midway point.

Ogunbowale matched her first half performance at DePaul from a week ago, tallying 19 points by the half. She was followed by 13 points from Young.

The Irish kept their foot on the gas in the third quarter, shooting 11-of-18 from the field to outpace the Bulldogs, 27-16, for the period. Young and Ogunbowale combined for 19 of the team's points as the latter ended the quarter with an old-fashioned three-point play right before the buzzer.

Young would get up to her total of 25 points midway through the fourth before being subbed out. In addition, Brianna Turner supplied 12 points, six rebounds and a season best four blocks in the contest.

Player of the Game
Ogunbowale tied her season high of 30 points, converting 11-of-19 from the field. The senior was two points shy of her career high and two rebounds shy of a double-double.

Stat of the Game
For the second time this tournament, and third time this year, the Irish scored over 50 points in the paint, tallying 52 tonight.

Notes
Today marked the first ever meeting between Notre Dame and Drake.

The Irish have now advanced to a Thanksgiving Showcase final for the second consecutive year. Last season, Notre Dame won the Gulf Coast Showcase in Ft. Myers, Florida.
Sophomore Danielle Patterson made her first career start in place of the injured Jessica Shepard.
Ogunbowale has now recorded five straight games with 20-plus points, picking up 30 on Friday. Last season, she shattered the Notre Dame single-season record for 20-plus scoring games with 25. Her career high is five straight set back in March of last season.
Ogunbowale now has 38 career games with 20-plus points, surpassing Ruth Riley for fourth all-time at Notre Dame.
Ogunbowale earned her sixth career game with 30 or more points.
Young earned her second game of 20-plus points this season and 13th of her career.
Turner has scored in double-digits in all but the DePaul game, tallying 12 tonight.
The Irish scored over 50 points in the paint for the second straight game.
Ogunbowale had 19 points in the first half, matching her performance at then No. 15 DePaul on Nov. 17.

With the victory, the Irish move on to the Vancouver Showcase finals, where they'll clash with the winner of No. 9 Oregon State/No. 13 South Carolina. The championship game will take place Saturday, Nov. 24, at 8 p.m. ET.

McWilliams FTs lift Oregon State to 70-68 win over Gamecocks

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Katie McWilliams sank two free throws with 1.9 seconds left to give No. 9 Oregon State a 70-68 win over 13th-ranked South Carolina in the semifinals of the Vancouver Showcase on Friday night.

McWilliams and Taya Corosdale led the Beavers (6-0) with 14 points apiece while Mikayla Pivec added 11. Te'a Cooper paced the Gamecocks (3-2) with 21 points and Alexis Jennings furnished 12.

Oregon State led 37-29 at the half after Destiny Slocum drained a shot from half court at the buzzer.

"It's the coaching," Oregon State coach Scott Rueck joked with fans after the game when asked for his thoughts on the buzzer-beater.

The Beavers extended the lead to 61-46 on a 3-pointer by Kat Tudor with 6:32 left before the Gamecocks rallied.

Cooper's 3-pointer with 25 seconds left tied the game at 68.

Following a timeout, Slocum tried to set up a final shot in the closing seconds, but she slipped near center court while being guarded closely, retrieved the ball while on the floor and sent a high pass to McWilliams for an alley-oop. But she was fouled while going up for the ball, setting the stage for final two decisive free throws.

Did the team and staff get complacent and take a 6 month vacation after winning the championship? Is the S&C program garbage? I’ve just never seen so many players sit out from such minor things.

I know it’s two different sports, but Ian Book played a MUCH more physical sport/game with a broken rib and kidney damage. Meanwhile, someone can’t play because “my ankle hurts!” Lol

Shepard dealt with lingering ankle issues last season. Anyone who has ever had a serious sprain knows they can cause lifelong problems. I still have ankle issues from torn ligaments and numerous sprains in high school. I think it's smart for Muffett to rest her superstars if they aren't 100% so they are able to finish a grueling ACC schedule.

It may not be serious but with her history and knowing she is an integral part of this team's success, I can see why Muffett may want to be cautious. And I do agree that S&C might be a problem. 4 ACL injuries in one season? That would be a lot for a football team but it's crazy for basketball with way less players. Remember when the football team had a crazy amount of injuries in back to back seasons? Kelly fired Longo and hired Balis, very few injuries compared to previous years.

First of all, we don't know if she'll play vs Oregon State or not. Secondly, if she does play it will be because Muffet and the health staff think she's ready to not do more damage. Thirdly, it may just be that Jess is tough enough to get out there regardless, even fibbing to the staff some to do that.

How anyone can question Jess or Muffet on any of this (without anything but a single set of four words to go on) stuns me.

Go get 'em, Jess. Go get 'em, Muffet. And do the right thing to optimize our roster strength for what really matters --- as you OBVIOUSLY will do.

Irish win 91-81. Was a little worried down 50-41 at the half. Nice to see Shep and Mabrey back playing. Mabrey hit a key three to break the 77-77 tie and we led the rest of the way. Jackie Young had another outstanding game as well.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Jacki Young scored 23 points, Arike Ogunbowale and Brianna Turner netted 21 apiece and No. 1 Notre Dame claimed the Vancouver Showcase championship, rallying for a 91-81 victory over No. 9 Oregon State on Saturday night.

Oregon State (6-1) led for the first three quarters, but the Irish drew even early in the fourth and pulled away.

The Irish (6-0) were bolstered by the return of top forward Jessica Shepard, who missed Friday's semifinal win over Drake with a sore ankle. She scored 17 points and helped the Irish outscore the Beavers 56-36 in the paint.

Destiny Slocum led the Beavers with 21 points, and Mikayla Pivec had 17.

The Beavers jumped out to an 18-9 lead as they kept the ball away from Ogunbowale and stretched their advantage to 29-17 by the end of the first quarter. Oregon State led by 14 early in the second, but the Irish connected more frequently and closed the gap to five points, at 46-41, as Shepard converted a rebound in the final minute.

Uncertainty ensued with Oregon State leading 48-41 with 30 seconds left in the opening half. Officials held a lengthy video review after Oregon State's Jessica Thropay fouled Ogunbowale during a scramble in the Beavers zone and kicked her in the face.

The review showed the kick was incidental, but the video also showed that Ogunbowale had elbowed Oregon State's Kat Tudor in the head moments earlier at the other end of the court.

Ogunbowale and Tudor were awarded offsetting free throws. Tudor made hers and Ogunbowale missed both to give the Beavers a 50-41 halftime lead.

Ogunbowale struggled again -- at an inopportune time -- in the third quarter. After pulling the Irish within a point at 58-57, she missed both of her free throws.

But the Irish stayed composed and took the lead for the first time, 72-70, on Shepard's layup early in the fourth and, after briefly giving it away, kept it for good.

Oregon State: The Beavers' ranking may improve after the strong showing against the defending NCAA champions.

Notre Dame: The Fighting Irish have not lost since dropping a 74-72 decision to Louisville on March 4 last season.

After celebrating the national championship with her teammates at Notre Dame in April, guard Jackie Young got her own parade back home in Princeton, Indiana. She and the town wouldn't mind doing that again in 2019.

Young became the top high school scorer in Indiana history at Princeton, which is in the southwest corner of the state, nearly 300 miles from South Bend. She said in high school that her goal was winning an NCAA title; now she's looking for more than one.

The No. 1 ranked Irish got their first real test of the season Saturday in the championship game of the Vancouver Showcase, as they trailed No. 9 Oregon State by as much as 14 and by nine at halftime.

But the Irish came back to win 91-81, and Young led the way with 23 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. All due respect to her teammate and 2018 Final Four hero Arike Ogunbowale, who was the Vancouver tournament's most outstanding player, but Young is the espnW player of the week. Young's defensive energy, rebounding and playmaking were all crucial against the Beavers.

Young got the assist on Marina Mabrey's 3-pointer with 3 minutes and 23 seconds left, which put the Irish up 80-77. They didn't give up the lead again. Young's defensive rebound on Kat Tudor's missed 3-pointer at 2:15 led to Young's assist to Jessica Shepard for a 3-point play -- a sequence that pretty much shut the door on the Beavers.

In the three games in Vancouver, Young averaged 20.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 6.7 assists. On the season, the 6-foot junior is averaging 18.3 points, 7.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists.

As mentioned, Ogunbowale also had an outstanding tournament, averaging 24.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists. And another player at the same event, Drake forward Sara Rhine, really stood out, too. She averaged 20.3 points and 5.0 rebounds in leading the Bulldogs to victories over Rutgers and No. 13 South Carolina, although Drake fell to Notre Dame.

Both Young and Ogunbowale vexed Drake, combining for 55 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists in that game. Then against Oregon State, the Irish were glad to have Mabrey back for the first time this season, as she'd been dealing with a quadriceps injury. But Young and Ogunbowale have been dynamic so far for the Irish (6-0), who next host Iowa on Thursday (ESPN2, 7 p.m. ET) and UConn on Sunday (ESPN, 4 p.m. ET).

Everyone recalls Ogunbowale's overtime buzzer-beater against the Huskies in the NCAA semifinals last season, but Young was the leading scorer in that game with 32 points on 10 of 15 shooting. She also had 11 rebounds in the national semifinal. Both are expected to be center stage the rest of this season, which bodes well for the Irish.

But, as I said/guessed early last season: Jackie is our real All-American due to utterly preternatural work rate on both ends of the court. This year I'm saying the same thing about both her and Jess, who is a nearly unstoppable force inside.

This team may lose a game or two due to heavy power schedule (including in league), but Wow are they good (once Marina and the young'un's firm up the point play and get Arike to the side position that she excels in) (and off any ball-handling "generalship" --- Arike needs to be a "receiver" not a QB.)

They actually signed a week or two ago. Both could start, but they'll for sure be getting heavy minutes regardless.

A story that isn't being talked about is the tweet below. Teams straight took it to UCONN this year on the trail. I wanted Notre Dame to land either Boston or Jones, but I'm happy with the the two 5 stars we got. Expect a grad transfer in the spring.

Muffet continues to load up the roster with top recruits. Brunelle and Peoples will contribute early and often.

For the 2020 class, I would expect it to be guard heavy. Muffet and staff kind of restocked with the bigs; I think they will take one, but they will have 4 bigs playing in the 2019 season.
