Any reason why Patterson isn’t playing? Injury?

ND's deep bench is getting a tad short.

An Anthony Anderson article noted Patterson was reported to have a "swollen knee". She's expected to play against Penn on Monday.

Marina also DNP due to "nagging left quadriceps". McGraw said Marina is questionable for the Penn game.

Muffet also expects Katlyn Gilbert to wear a harness on her right shoulder throughout the season.

Cosgrove DNP against Penn for a team rule violation. Expected back Monday.

Young got her annual broken nose last week. According to Muffet it's not as bad as last year and probably won't require surgery. Jackie wore a mask in the first half against Harvard but didn't use it in the second half.

Someone will know much better than I about this (since I can't even find a full box score let alone not having viewed a game), but it seems that our great coach still has a little polishing to do with the team.

Wild surmises on little evidence:
1). Arike is still gunning up everything in sight. Poor shot selection early and missing them. Coach praises her "leadership" but I think it's just Muffet-the-Master-Psychologist at work;
2). Jess and Brianna can't be stopped and have very high conversion percentages and get the team started while Arike is cold and not letting the game come to her.
3). Way too many turnovers. Marina coming back (whenever) will surely cure some of that, but it would have been nice if one of the freshmen guards would have been a possession-perfect player.
4). MAYBE once Jess and Brianna prove that they can dominate anytime they want to, the team deliberately shifts into other experimental modes, and the leads don't grow fast. I note that sluggishness in the second quarter probably produced a halftime talking to, and the ladies came out 11-0 in the third with Jess and Brianna doing most of that damage.

All that said: this is a great team and our great coach has (seemingly) less "magic" to pull off than in previous years --- but point guard stability and game management is still a big deal once the powerhouses show up.

To me a lot of it was what I was kind of worried about with both Shepherd and Turner (or Vaughn) in the game, namely that the lane gets clogged up. With Kat they were able to have one person in the low post and one person either in the high post or setting screens higher up. That allowed them to really find some open space to get a shot off or find a passing lane for a better look. Even before last year when it was Turner and Kat they were able to run a nice pick and roll with Turner because the lane was mostly empty. Now its so clogged that they can't drive against the zone and aren't hot enough shooting right now to force the zone to expand. We really only have one shooter on the floor most times and that person is also our best ball handler and actually prefers to be a slasher. Its just too much of the offense that is trying to be run too close to the basket. Right now they can mostly get away with it because the rebounding is so good that a bad shot is basically an assist, but when we face a taller, longer team that can close down the inside passing lanes and actually rebound, or even just a faster team that can keep up with the quick ball movement, then you will probably see the same high turnover rate but with fewer second chance points. Now, all that said, I think its pretty easy to fix. We heard how Shepherd was working on her jumper so we just need to remind her to stay a little further out and take a few of those every game and then we need to have Turner be the rim running screener that she was two years ago. Giving our guards more room to attack the basket will only help Turner and Shepherd too because it will be harder for defenses to put a body on them when they crash the boards for the rebound.

I'm betting that they easily fix any lane-clogging issues simply by better floor-general play --- i.e. calling the sort of play we loved with Kat and having Jess play Kat's high post role. Jess is a pretty good passer and she'll do it.

But also call the clear-for-Jess plays, and Brianna will get "just" out of the way to bound on the weakside. I'm very optimistic about this. Id just have liked to see another Lindsay show up among those frosh. ... well, I'm spoiled.

Yeah, I'm not too worried about Shepherd being able to space it out, I think its just something MM will have to stress so she remembers it more during the game. She is still such a natural at banging down low that I expect it feels weird to be hanging out in space more often.

I'm more worried about Turner being able to do it. Right now there is a real hesitancy to her game as well as some rust. The rust will probably be gone after a few more games, but there is a risk the hesitancy could stay. You just never know how long it will take an athlete to get their mind back to normal after they get back to playing after an injury.

First ranked matchup for the women's team as they take on #16 DePaul on the road. This'll keep me entertained until the football game starts.

Apparently Muffet doesn't practice beating the press. DePaul running the simplest of full court pressures and Notre Dame looks lost.

All I was able to do was to read the results (in detail and pretty well done) on Depaul's site, but they present an interesting slice of life.
1). Depaul was three-point happy most of the game, and we don't do that too well (yet) either offensively or defensively--- please get well Marina.
2). Depaul was apparently crazy fired up and caused lots of 1st period turnovers (10) and out rebounded us --- almost impossible.
3). Jess Shepard was unstoppable if they/we just get her the ball. She had the greatest "efficiency" quotient in the game.
4). Jackie apparently worked her butt off. We ultimately wore them down and dominated the boards.
5). Arike gunned it up again but her points were very needed. She had 6 turnovers I think --- maybe 5.
6).The new point guard (Nixon) had the same amount and better watch out or she'll be replaced by not only Marina when she returns but Prohaska as well, who played a nearly error-free 16 minutes (no TOs.)
7). Patterson played very well. Helped the dominating comeback and the don't-look-back by-passing of Depaul.
8). Brianna apparently didn't look that good and neither did Vaughn.

Shepard and Young seem to have pulled us through, with a lot of help, especially from Patterson and Prohaska. I HAVE JUST GOT TO SEE THEM PLAY. This wild stats-guessing is driving me nuts.

Some comments from observations, game stats, and articles:

1. I believe the outside game IS DePaul's game. And no, we haven't shot 3's well, so far this year, but then, ND's game IS an inside game as evidenced by the team shooting % AND Marina's absence.

2. DePaul pressed. Smart move when Marina's not dressed and ND is playing a true freshman as field general in her third game.

3. Shep was unstoppable later in the game inside. Early on I believe she had a negative eff. grade and shot poorly from the foul line.

4. Jackie always works her butt off. Re-broken nose or not. As for boards Bri didn't play much, 16 minutes and had 4 boards. Patterson playing in her stead only had 2 boards in 22 minutes. Nixon's who a whole lot shorter than Patterson and plays further away from the backboards had 2 rebs in 24 minutes.

5. Arike shot 50% from inside the arc. She was 1-5 outside the arc. Jackie was the only other 3 shooter going 1-2.

6. Yes, Nixon had 6 TO's. I read an article that half of them were actually due muffs by the intended receiver. BTW, veterans Arike and Jackie had 5 each. Prohaska is a ball hawk. Is she a viable point guard?

7. Patterson's shooting and blocks were uplifting. Her rebounding wasn't noticeable.

Semifinal (if win): winner of Drake/Rutgers | Friday, Nov. 23 | 9 pm ET
Finals or 3rd Place game: vs TBD | Saturday, Nov. 24 | 8 pm ET

VANCOUVER - Three games in three days - that's what the No. 1 University of Notre Dame women's basketball team will have to face when the Vancouver Showcase begins on Thursday, Nov. 22. The Fighting Irish (3-0) kick off the eight-team bracket at 3 p.m. ET on Thanksgiving Day with Gonzaga (4-0). If victorious, the Irish will clash with the winner of the Drake/Rutgers matchup in Friday's semifinal round at 9 p.m. If the Irish reach either Saturday's title game or third place bout, that matchup will occur at 8 p.m. regardless.

NO STRANGERS TO THE SHOWCASE
The Irish are no strangers to the eight-team Thanksgiving showcase format. Last season, Notre Dame won the Gulf Coast Showcase, knocking off ETSU, No. 17 South Florida and No. 3 South Carolina in consecutive days. Jackie Young was named the tournament's MVP after averaging 19.3 points and 7.7 rebounds.

BIG-GAME JACKIE
The title says it all about junior guard Jackie Young. Last season, the Irish played 16 ranked opponents and in those games Young not only outperformed her season scoring average, but also ranked second among all Irish players in scoring for those games: 16.6 points on 51.8 percent shooting, to go with her 6.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists against top-25 teams.

Well first game against a top-25 team this season and Young was back at it again. The Indiana native recorded a 28-point, 12-rebound, double-double at No. 15 DePaul. She also converted a career best 11-of-12 from the free-throw line.

FRESHMEN CAUGHT STEALING
When looking at Notre Dame's top-two steal getters, look no further than two freshmen: Abby Prohaska and Jordan Nixon. Prohaska is coming off a big defensive game against No. 15 DePaul, in which she secured four steals to bring her season total to seven. Meanwhile, Nixon follows right behind with six.

20-POINT STREAK
After shattering the Notre Dame single season record for 20-point games with 25 last year, Ogunbowale is back at it again, starting the season with three in a row. In fact, the only other ACC player with three 20-point scoring games is the one she battled last season for ACC Player of the Year, Asia Durr.

Ogunbowale now has 36 career games with 20-plus points, passing Jewell Loyd for fifth all-time. Next up is Ruth Riley with 37.

SPARK OFF THE BENCH
Coach McGraw credited two important sparks off the bench after the big 101-77 win at No. 15 DePaul: Abby Prohaska and Danielle Patterson. Prohaska tallied four points, four assists, zero turnovers and four steals in 26 minutes of play. More importantly, Prohaska's plus-minus of +25 was the highest of any Irish player in the win. Meanwhile, Patterson posted a career game with highs in points (14), made field goals (5) and blocks (3).

UNSELFISH PLAY
Through three games, the Irish are averaging 19.7 assists, which ranks 26th in the country. Leading scorer, Ogunbowale, who averaged 2.8 assists per game last year, is the team leader at 4.7 per game, which ranks third in the ACC. Consider the fact that Ogunbowale has totaled 75 points and 14 assists - meaning she's already responsible for over 100 points this season.

Both Jordan Nixon and Jackie Young follow suit with 3.7 assists per game.

HOT SHOOTING TEAM
Notre Dame ranks fourth in the nation in shooting percentage, converting over half its shots at 53.8 percent. Jessica Shepard leads the way for the Irish, ranked 38th in the country at 64.3 percent. She is followed by Jackie Young, ranked 65th at 60.7 percent.

All has led to the Irish ranking ninth in the country in scoring, averaging 93.0 points per game.

Well-traveled Irish women's basketball team means business in Canada
By Anthony Anderson Tribune Correspondent 12 hrs ago

Two point guards out?
Not only does senior point guard Marina Mabrey remain “questionable” to play in Vancouver, according to McGraw, after missing the first three games of the season with a quadriceps injury, but Nixon — Mabrey’s replacement in the starting lineup — “hasn’t been feeling well” this week, according to the coach.

“Hopefully, she’ll be ready to go,” McGraw said of Nixon, who missed a second straight practice Tuesday after scoring six points, making three steals and dishing three assists in 24 minutes during Saturday’s 101-77 win at No. 15 DePaul.

“We definitely have a lot of power in the post,” McGraw said about the possibility of Nixon and Mabrey both being sidelined, “(but) whether we can play three posts together, that’s kind of a question we have to figure out.”

BGIF: good news (in a way) if Nixon's TOs are mainly due to "muffs" of other players --- that was true of WMUs greatest ball-handler ever when I helped the staff a little 15 years ago --- some players have a "bad" hand when receiving properly positioned low passes. If this is true then Nixon will figure out how to "baby" that sort of player weakness.

Bad news obviously if neither point guard can go, and Gonzaga can harass from the guard position. Maybe this could be a big game to see what Prohaska can do.

"Three Big" line-up?: Wow, not seeing it for much time in a game if Marina isn't available. Shepard+Turner+Young+Ogunbowale+?Patterson/Vaughn? How does that team function vs. an opponent who is pretty good, and who might sit in a zone? Well, Muffet will find a way...............

No. 1 Irish Moves on to Semis with 81-65 Win over Gonzaga Five Irish players finish in double figures

VANCOUVER – Plenty to be thankful for on Thanksgiving Day, as the No. 1 Notre Dame women's basketball team earned an 81-65 victory over Gonzaga in the opening round of the Vancouver Showcase. The Fighting Irish (4-0) had five players finish in double-digit points, all while outscoring the Bulldogs (4-1), 56-34, in the paint.

Arike Ogunbowale, Brianna Turner, Jessica Shepard, Jackie Young and Katlyn Gilbert scored all but one point for the Irish. Ogunbowale led the way with 21 points, which included 18 in the second half. In addition, Shepard and Turner each collected a double-double.

How It Happened
Notre Dame got off to a slow shooting start as Gonzaga responded by jumping out to a 14-7 lead, its largest of the game. Turner, Gilbert, Young and Shepard all had at least four points by the end of the opening period, ending the quarter down 21-18.

The Irish then utilized a 6-0 run to start the second quarter. Gilbert secured a layup at 9:08 then it was all Young and Shepard the rest of the way, as the duo combined for 17 of the team's 19 second quarter points.

On the defensive front, the Irish limited the Bulldogs to 5-of-21 shooting for the period and 11 points, taking a 40-29 lead into the half. Young and Shepard had 12 and 13 points, respectively, by the midway point.

Turner took over the opening minutes of the third quarter, scoring six of the team's first eight points. Next, Ogunbowale, who was limited to three points in the first half, ignited with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting in the third, keeping the Irish up 60-45 heading into the final period.

By the conclusion of the third, Ogunbowale, Young, Turner and Shepard all were in double-digits, as the latter already had a double-double.

Ogunbowale went on to score the first five points of the fourth quarter and first eight of the team's 12, as Turner supplied the other four. Turner soon earned her third double-double on the year while Gilbert reached double-digits for the first time of her career with 14 points.

Player of the Game
Gilbert, who entered the contest with four total points on the year, exploded with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting with five rebounds, one block and one steal in 33 minutes of play.

Stat of the Game
Both Shepard and Turner collected double-doubles on the afternoon. It marked the second straight game in which two Irish players had done so, with Shepard and Young achieving the feat at DePaul.

Notes
Notre Dame now leads the all-time series, 2-0, against Gonzaga.
Coach McGraw earned career win No. 892.
Today marked just the second time the Irish have played on Thanksgiving Day. The previous was an 84-79 victory over No. 23 San Diego State in 2009.
Ogunbowale has now recorded four straight games with 20-plus points, picking up 21 on Thursday. Last season, she shattered the Notre Dame single-season record for 20-plus scoring games with 25.
Ogunbowale now has 37 career games with 20-plus points, tying Ruth Riley for fourth all-time at Notre Dame.
Notre Dame has totaled 212 total points in the paint through four games, averaging 53.0 per game. Irish outscored Gonzaga 56-34 in the paint on Thursday
Gilbert, who entered the contest with four total points on the year, exploded with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including five rebounds, one block and one steal.
Shepard picked up her second straight double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. It marked the 42nd of her career.
Turner earned her third double-double on the year with 16 points and 10 rebounds. It marked the 24th of her career. In addition, the 16 points tied her season high.
Young nabbed her 42nd career game in double figures.
Today marked the first time this season the Irish finished with five players in double figures.

Arike probably needs Marina back more than Muffet does. Arike is probably a bit overloaded with as much ball handling responsibility as she now has --- she usually is slow to get her OGame smoothed out, but this year seems worse.

No surprise to me that it's Jess and Jackie that give opponents so much early trouble. Nice that Brianna took over early also. That Prohaska started is a good sign --- and Gilbert was a nice revelation --- TOs were significantly better.

I'll bet Gonzaga is very good, and essentially "home", yet we won cruising away even with no proven point guards. Pretty good signs of things to come methinks.

Just checked the game score (first quarter plus) and we are in a dogfight with Drake. Jess Shepard appears NOT to be playing. If that is true, it "certifies" what I've been saying about her critical nature for this team. We are dominating with her in the paint, and we become a LOT less difficult to defend without her.

REALLY hope that nothing is amiss here.

Looks like they pulled it off with a similar score to the Gonzaga game. Wonder what's up with Shepard. Hopefully nothing serious. Arike and Jackie both had a great game, 30 and 25 points, respectively. Turner the only other player in double figures though. Thr good news is they still manage to win comfortably without Sheppard, Marina, and Nixon. Didn't have a real PG on the floor. But we need our girls to get healthy for UCONN.

Jess, Marina, and Nixon did not dress for the game.

ND won 82 - 64
