Hahn, Tucker 3-pointers lead Wildcats in overtime

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Villanova is making its first trip to the NCAA Tournament last a little longer.

Adrianna Hahn scored 24 points, including a key 3-pointer in overtime to help the No. 9 seed Wildcats beat eighth-seeded South Dakota State 81-74 on Friday night in the first round of the women's NCAAs.

This was the first NCAA Tournament win for the Wildcats since 2004 when they beat Mississippi State 66-63 in the opening round. Villanova, which hadn't played in the NCAAs in five years, had to work for the victory.

South Dakota State trailed by 12 early in the fourth quarter before rallying to tie the game when Madison Guebert banked in a 3-pointer from the wing just before the buzzer at the end of regulation.

"We just kind of chipped away the whole game and gave ourselves a chance there in overtime," Guebert said.

"When I saw that shot go in my heart sunk and I just couldn't believe that we were going to continue playing the game," Hahn said of the game-tying shot. "But we just had to keep playing just like we played at the beginning."

In a game that Villanova never trailed and that was tied only twice, the Wildcats needed some hot 3-point shooting in overtime to finally squelch the Jackrabbits' comeback and secure the win.

With the game tied at 70 in overtime, the Wildcats hit three straight 3-pointers -- the first two by Jannah Tucker. Hahn's 3-pointer made it 79-70 with 55 seconds left and Villanova (23-8) advanced to play top seed and former Big East rival Notre Dame.

Tucker finished with 20. Mary Gedaka had 15 and Alex Louin added 10.

Macy Miller paced the Jackrabbits (26-7) with 25 points. Guebert had 21 points and Ellie Thompson had 16 to round out double-digit scorers for South Dakota State.

In a game that saw the script flipped, Villanova proved that experience didn't necessarily matter for success in the postseason.

South Dakota State was making its eighth appearance in the last 10 NCAA Tournaments while the Wildcats were making their first appearance in the last five years.

None of the Villanova players had ever played in an NCAA Tournament game while five Jackrabbits were on a team that played two games in the 2016 tournament.

The inexperienced Wildcat players weren't impressed, especially early on.

Hahn sparked an immediate 3-point barrage for Villanova with three triples in the first four minutes of the game as the Wildcats built a quick 14-4 lead that ballooned to 26-11 at the end of the first quarter.

"They're a great team and they don't beat themselves," Tucker said of knowing South Dakota State would make a comeback. "So we knew if we let up and if we continue to make little mistakes, they were going to make us pay for them."

The Wildcats came into the contest averaging 8.7 made 3-pointers per game.

They had 10 3-pointers at halftime, which already tied their season high for 3-pointers in game, and finished with 16 total triples on 38 long-range attempts, also a season high.

"We had to make threes to win the game," said Villanova coach Harry Perretta, who told his team before the game that at least 12 3-pointers were needed to have a chance. "The big talk at halftime was to continue shooting the three, and that was the big talk before the game."

On the other side, the Jackrabbits shot only three of 16 3-pointers for the game.

"Three-point shooting was clearly the difference," said South Dakota State Aaron Johnston. "We're a better shooting team than that. We just couldn't get any of them to go."

BIG PICTURE

Villanova: Louin recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

South Dakota State: The Jackrabbits missed their quest for a second round of 32 appearance in the last three seasons.

VETERAN LEADERSHIP

In his 18th season coaching South Dakota State, Johnston might be considered one of the graybeards of this NCAA Tournament. But that tenure pales in comparison to Perretta's 40 seasons at Villanova.

ROAD TRIP

A lively and large contingent of South Dakota State fans made the 667-mile trip from Sioux Falls to South Bend. About 400 faithful, clad in their yellow and blue, were part of the 4,431 total attendance at Purcell Pavilion on the campus of Notre Dame.

I did not see the 65-70 foot assist Young got on a Rico trey. Jess took the rebound mid lane and passed to Young about 10 feet away. Jackie quickly threw a rope to Arike in the far corner for a three. Bang, Bang, Bang.

Rees needs to get a copy of that play ingrained in Wimbush's head. Perhaps Jackie can help Brandon with his mechanics. She didn't hesitate. Saw Rico in the corner and stepped into her throw. IF Brandon can hit receivers in the corner with that kind of decision making, Ian will be doing 4th quarter victory plays.

NCAA 2nd Round ND 10 minute Interview

NCAA 2nd Round ND 10 minute Interview

Koko, Marina, and Muffet.

Koko and Marina fill the first 4 or 5 minutes and Muffet the rest.

The players were asked about Kat's loss and how they dealt with that. Koko replied deadpan, "We've have a couple of injuries this season. We're used to adjusting." Both players and McGraw praised Kat's steadying influence on team play.

McGraw note the 2nd quarter was the best ND has played all year. She wasn't happy about the defensive lapses in the game particularly leaving Brooks all alone on several shots. She praised both Brooks and Fluker. She mentioned ND played "man" and several opponents end up open in transition.

Muffet's discussion of facing Nova is enlightening and worth the listen.

She noted ND will not match up well against Nova. They have 5 players that can shoot from the perimeter. "We can't have our bigs chasing people around the outside." Most teams use about 15 seconds of the clock. Nova likes to use all of the clock to slow to reduce possessions. She added that there was no one in the ACC nor on ND's schedule that plays Nova style.

From looking at Nova's roster, posted earlier in this thread, they don't have dominant bigs. Tallest player is 6-2 and they only have 1 6-2 Center, a forward 6-1 and a 6-0 forward. Playing in the paint is not their game. They're going play perimeter ball.

On offense, ND needs to play ND's game, Marina's treys, Jess to the glass, Rico should drive, pop from the outside AND dish.

Nova likes to shoot 3s but as a team they average 33, 3s attempted a game making 9. Five of their players shoot better than 33% but none shoot better than 39. Their 6-2 Center, Megan Quinn, has taken 78 3s making 21, 26%.

6-1 Guard, Gedaka, is the FG Ace shooting 60% but only averages 11.7 ppg. Three other players average 11 ppg. 6-0 Guard, Alex Louin averages 11.9 ppg and is the leading rebounder, 7 rpg, and leading assist maker, 2.9 apg a has 6 double doubles. Nobody else on the team has a double double. Hahn, 5-6 Guard, 11.1 ppg and Jekot, 6-0 Guard averages 11.2 ppg. 5-0 Guard, Tucker adds 9.0 ppg.

Louin is the leading FT shooter sinking 90 of 118 trips to the line. She's physical and uses a lot of hands and body on offense and defense.

This is a Guard Offense, 9 of the 12 girl roster are guards, average 56.7 ppg or 83.2% of the Total Offense.

Their Center, 6-2 Mary Quinn average 5.4 ppg and combined with the 2 forwards 6-2, Bridget Herlihy, and 6-0, Brianna Herlihy the BIGs average 10.7 ppg.

These people are shot-happy bombers. With our depleted roster Muffet might still want to zone. If so, a 1-2-2 base with the two bigs in the corners (Jessica and Koko), might be best. off side big and wing can close the middle. Marina, Jackie, and Arike will probably have to play entire games where they are shuffling (hard) and hustling on D, getting little rest on either end. Hopefully, these people are not good at entry to the high post and passing from there.

If I were stuck with this situation, I'd take my time in the set-up (half court) offense --- rest a little, and feed Jessica all night. Sure, break when it's there (three players can rest on most breakaways even if they shouldn't), but set up half court with a non-quick-hitting patient offense. Jessica shoots and Jackie O-Rebounds their brains out.

Villanova couldn't have played a better first half. Mabrey needs to be involved offensively, and keep feeding Shepard until they stop her.

I've never seen ND worse defensively --- but it is forgivable sort of. When we lost our AA shotblocker for the season, it was obvious that it would take all-five-hustling this year to be a good defensive team. When Mychal went down, we lost our best defensive guard. Then Lili went down, Another good defender. Now our defensively supersmart Kat is gone. There are only so many body shots that a team can take.

Our offense is fine, even having to play Kaitlin and Danielle a lot. But defensively, there is very little intelligence left. Arike has never been good at it, and Jessica is one of the slowest players in D1 BBall. We might win this game, but what a crummy hand Muffet has been dealt.

Kat Westbeld --- that was just about the stuff of legend.

The ex-coach on ESPN stunned me with his idiocy after the game --- talking about how Notre Dame got its OFFENSE together and pulled away. The guy must have lost his coaching eye since retiring --- it was our DEFENSE that allowed us to pull away, and Kat's solidification of that was CRUCIAL. At least Rebecca Lobo recognized it.

Kat deserves some kind of special award.

Kathryn "Willis" Westbeld

Kathryn "Willis" Westbeld

48 years ago I was a patient in an Army Hospital Convalescent Ward. As a treat we got to watch the Knicks versus the Lakers in Game 7 for the NBA Championship. NY's center and captain, Willis Reed, had not played in Game 6. Without Reed NY was not expected to have a chance in the game. He didn't take the court for warm ups but when he walked out on the court for the opening tip, the fans and his teammates erupted. Reed only scored 4 points but the Knicks won comfortably inspired by their captain.

With a sprained ankle Kat didn't start against Nova and the Irish looked ragged. Nova dropped 3s like a flight of B-52s, the bombers not the band, and when they weren't launching 3s, they were slashing to the basket largely unopposed. At halftime ND was lucky to have a tie.

When Kat walked on the floor for the second half, the fans exploded and her teammates found a new energy. Kat only shot 1-5 but in her 16 minutes she helped turn a tied game into a rout. She only had half of Willis Reed's 4 points but she was a terror everywhere else. In 16 minutes she had 6 rebs, 2 offensive, and assist, a steal, a block, and NO turnovers.

On defense she played out on the perimeter when a raised hand in the face of those 3 point shooter, when someone cut to the basket she took away the passing lane, and when the shot was taken, she boxed out and was in position on a sprained ankle to secure the rebound.

On offense she moved around putting fluidity into the ND attack. When a teammate got trapped she got open to take the pass. Her shots was rusty but with Kat on the floor her teammates shot smarter. She made the sum of the parts greater.

I hope she's healthy for a full game next weekend. She'll be needed.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- How sweet it is - the No. 1-seeded University of Notre Dame women's basketball team has advanced to its 16th Sweet 16 and ninth straight after a strong second half surge lifted the Irish past No. 9 Villanova, 98-72. Tied at 45 at the half, the Irish (31-3) outscored the Wildcats (23-9), 53-27, in the second half.

For the second straight game, three Irish players finished with 20-plus points led by Jessica Shepard's double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds. Jackie Young earned a career-best 24 points and nearly netted a double-double herself with nine rebounds. Arike Ogunbowale rounded out the trio with 24 points and eight rebounds.

"We obviously defended a lot better in the second half. We were very excited to have Kat available for the second half and change the course of the game. We're just a very different team with her on the floor," Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said. "Jess was just unstoppable inside. Our game plan was to go inside and she did everything we needed her to do."

How It Happened
For the sixth time this year, Jessica Shepard reached double-digit points by the end of the first quarter, totaling 10 points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting. Shepard's hot start helped the Irish keep pace with Villanova's quick opening from beyond the arc, as the Wildcats ended the first period 4-of-7 from three.

The second quarter featured both sides delivering punches, as both Notre Dame and Villanova remained deadlocked at 45-all heading into the half. Both teams shot exactly 56.7 percent (17-of-30) in the first half, as Villanova kept pace by connecting on 10-of-15 from three. All-in-all, there were 15 lead changes and nine ties in the first half. Jackie Young and Arike Ogunbowale combined for 15 points in the second quarter, while Kaitlin Cole had an important offensive board and put-back at the buzzer to close the half.

With the Irish needing a difference maker, enter Kathryn Westbeld, who started the second half to a standing ovation. Westbeld became an instant spark, as Notre Dame started with a 14-3 run and ultimately outscored the Wildcats, 28-8, in the quarter. This time, Young and Ogunbowale combined for 18 points in the quarter.

Notre Dame continued to pour in the points in the fourth, outscoring Villanova, 25-19, to cruise to the 98-72 final. Westbeld's spark was proven by the fact that the senior finished +30 (49-19) in plus-minus in 16 minutes of action.

Player of the Game
Jessica Shepard shot 10-of-12 from the field to finish with 25 points, her third straight game with 20-plus points. Shepard also reeled in 10 rebounds, giving the junior her fourth consecutive double-double.

The last Irish player who achieved four straight double-doubles was Jacqueline Batteast in January of 2004.

Stat of the Game
The Irish defense did not allow a single Villanova three-pointer in the second half. In fact, the Wildcats could only muster five attempts in the second half.

Shepard followed up her 24-point, 10-rebound, seven-assist, zero-turnover line in last weekend’s 99-81 opening-round win over Cal State Northridge with a 25-point, 10-board, zero-turnover performance against Villanova.

Zero turnovers in 65 postseason minutes?

Kat Back In A Boot

The ankle is swollen and she's not practicing which isn't new. She didn't practice the last 6 weeks of the season with recurring issues with the surgically repaired right ankle. McGraw would like her to start against A&M.

Muffet on Jackie: stunned to hear that my early assessment of Jackie was UNDERstated when I felt that she would be our true AA, but Muffet is the Queen and she knows all.

...... still... best ever is a LOT to say.

Did I hear correctly that she was held out of practice today and she is a game time decision?

I haven't seen anything today. You're generally closer to what's going on than we are. If she didn't practice today that would be par for the last 6 week's.
