I thought so too. But on the replay you see Mabrey get ball first, then they tangle. It’s tough to call that one, especially at the end of a game regardless how it’s been called.

The irony is this same scenario played out yesterday (I believe) when L'ville played MSU, and same result. No call at the end of regulation. Probably cost L'ville the game.

Poetic justice I guess.

Per Mechelle Voepel
Mississippi State WBB coach Vic Schaefer blames himself: "You’re up five with a minute 40 to go, and I didn’t get them home. I will wear that, maybe for the rest of my career."

Wow what a game!! GO IRISH!! Also don’t want to hear anything from MSU fans... it seemed like they got away with fouls every time down the court.

Okay, admit it. You're already thinking repeat. I feel great for Muffet. So many great teams that came up short. Then when you think there's no chance, BOOM!

Great adjustment to start pushing the ball before MSU could get set on D. Created a lot of points and foul trouble for MSU.

GO IRISH!

Is it too early to starting planning for Muffet's statue outside the Joyce Center? Hopefully, she continues to coach the Lady Irish for many years to come and adds a few more NCAA Championships to her coaching resume.

Not what I said.

I said when you play that type of style, it's tough to get a consistent whistle from the officials. I've seen tons of comments on other boards talking about how it was a missed call. It, technically, was probably a foul. But, given the context of how the officials had to officiate this game because of MSU's style, it wasn't called. For MSU, you don't get to try to play physical, and then complain when a physical play isn't called.

No, they didn't swallow their whistles. I think they called it within the confines of how the game was played, or tried to at the end of the National Championship game.

Soo, the officials had to officiate this game to accommodate one team's style of play.

How do they choose which teams style of play dictates how they interpret the rules?

What about the other team's style of play?

Or is it just the guy with the biggest woman rules?

Did I say accommodate? That implies something completely different. B

I respect your posts, and your obviously very versed on this team. But, to imply that styles of play don't play into how a game is officiated is bordering on silliness.

I'll rephrase - remove the word "HAD". They DID officiate the game a specific way, and MSU's style of play influenced that greatly. It's a saying you hear all the time, "They won't call every foul" with this style of play. Are the accommodating then? Styles of play often influence how a game is officiated. I'm not sure that's a debatable statement.

And to answer your question, yes. What the big girl is allowed to do, as well has how the defense is allowed to defend her, is paramount, especially when there is such a difference. Exhibit A would be L'ville vs Baylor in 2013.

Disappointed I missed the first 99% of the game

How fitting is that. The 2 national championship for the Notre Dame women both won on Easter Sunday.

Not true.

Loomis is correct. ESPN erroneously reported two Easter Sunday Championships and still have it in their post game article by Adi Joseph. Ruth Riley and Company didn't win on an Easter Sunday. It was later corrected in the ESPN's fashion. They just stopped mentioning Easter Sunday when mentioning two titles. April 1 is the date both titles were won.

ND closed the gap on Rebs in the 2nd half. Final MSST 38 ND 35, they had 12-6 edge on Orebs. Naysayers will say it's because of McCowans time on the bench. Not true, McCowans had 38 minutes of PT. Her backup was credited with 2 minutes PT. MSST used 4 up front:
McCowans C, 38 minutes, 17 Rebs, 18 Pts
Vivians F, 39, 9, 21
Campbell, C, 2, 0, 0
Bibby, F, 1, 1, 0

ND played 3 up front all 3 of whom were in also in foul trouble:
Jess, 35, 6, 19
Kat 31, 9, 6
Koko 24, 4, 2

Irish DEE-FENSE!

I didn't hear it mentioned that "the team that doesn't play defense" held the 2nd Best Tournament Team to 17 points below MSSTs, 79.8, say 80 ppg Tournament Average ... and did it with just 6 players, 4 with foul trouble.

Irish Win 2nd NCAA Women's Basketball Title :: Notre Dame Women's Basketball :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of ND Athletics

Irish Win 2nd NCAA Women's Basketball Title
Ogunbowale last second three lifts Irish to 61-58 win

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- For the second time in program history, the University of Notre Dame women's basketball team is your NCAA National Champions. The No. 1-seeded Irish (35-3) completed the second-largest comeback in Final Four history to defeat the No. 1-seeded Bulldogs (37-2) 61-58. Arike Ogunbowale hit a three with 0.1 remaining to clinch the title for the Irish. It was 17 years ago to the date that Notre Dame won its first NCAA Championship.

Jessica Shepard and Ogunbowale led the Irish all the way back after trailing by 15 halfway through the third quarter. The Irish finished the third quarter on a 16-1 run to tie the game at 41.

In the fourth quarter, the Irish erased a five-point deficit with under two minutes remaining. A Marina Mabrey three and Jackie Young jumper tied the game at 58 with 45 seconds left.

After a defensive stand and forced turnover, the Irish had the ball with 3.0 seconds left. Ogunbowale received the ball and took a dribble towards the corner before hoisting the game-winning shot.

How It Happened
The opening quarter saw runs from both teams and the Irish started it off by scoring the first six points. Notre Dame was active defensively, garnering four early steals, while all five starters got on the scoreboard to jump out to a 10-4 advantage at the first media timeout at the 4:15 mark. However, Mississippi State ended the quarter on a 13-4 scoring spree to take a 17-14 lead.

Notre Dame's offense struggled to find its rhythm in the second quarter, receiving its lone points from a Shepard old-fashioned three-point play. Yet, the defense kept the Irish within reach, limiting MSU to 13 points to trail just 30-17 at the half.

Mississippi State's Victoria Vivians would hit a three-pointer at the 6:41 mark as the Irish then faced its largest deficit of the game, down 40-25. Yet, once again, Notre Dame fought back in this Final Four, ending the quarter on an impressive 16-1 run, keeping the Bulldogs off the scoreboard for the final 4:27.

In the final quarter, neither team could separate themselves by more than four points for almost the entire period. Roshunda Johnson hit a three with 1:58 remaining to give Mississippi State a 58-53 lead. Mabrey responded for the Irish with a three on the ensuing possession. After an Irish stop, Young hit a jumper to tie the game at 58 with under a minute to go.

The Irish got another defensive stand following the game-tying bucket and were poised for the final shot. After both teams exchanged turnovers, the Irish had an in-bound opportunity in front of their bench with seconds remaining. Young passed it in to Ogunbowale running to her right and Ogunbowale put up the shot to win the championship for the Irish.

Player of the Game
Junior Arike Ogunbowale hit the game-winning shot for the second straight game to clinch Notre Dame's second national championship. She finished the game with 18 points and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player following the game.

Stat of the Game
Ogunbowale has been the No.1 play on SportsCenter Top-10 twice during the Final Four weekend.

Notes
  • Notre Dame has won its second NCAA Championship in program history.
  • Today marked the second time the NCAA title game has been played on Easter Sunday. Ironically, the only other time was April 1, 2001, Notre Dame’s first NCAA Championship. WRONG, Easter Sunday in 2001 was on April 15.
  • Tonight’s matchup marked the 37th NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship contest.
  • Notre Dame becomes the seventh women’s basketball program to win multiple NCAA Championships.
  • Tonight’s game marked Notre Dame’s sixth NCAA Title game appearance, which ties Louisiana Tech for the third most. The Irish are 2-4 all-time in the NCAA Final.
  • Sunday’s contest marked the first meeting between Notre Dame and Mississippi State.
  • Today’s victory gives Coach McGraw win No. 800 at Notre Dame and No. 888 overall.
  • To earn the 2018 NCAA National Title, Coach McGraw defeated the three other Naismith Coach of the Year Finalists in Coach Graves of Oregon, Coach Auriemma of UConn and now Coach Schaefer of Mississippi State.
  • Irish are 7-1 when trailing at the half this season. Notre Dame trailed at the midway point in the final four games of the NCAA Tournament. The Irish were down 13 points (30-17) to Mississippi State.
  • The 15-point comeback was the most in an NCAA title game and tied for the second most in the Final Four.
  • The 13-point comeback ties the second largest of the season and marked the second time they came back down 13 points in the NCAA Tournament, previously doing so against Texas A&M in the Sweet 16.

UP NEXT

The Irish will return to South Bend on Monday around 12:30 p.m. ET. Irish fans can come celebrate the 2018 National Championship by gathering along Notre Dame Avenue in front of Main Building for the welcome home celebration.

Arike Ogunbowale of Notre Dame wins most outstanding player honors in NCAA women's basketball tournament
ESPN News Services

(Even Holly mentioned it, Jeff)

(Congrats to Arike and Jess who both made the All-Tournament Team)

Notre Dame's Arike Ogunbowale delivered two of the biggest shots of this year's Final Four, and her heroics helped her earn most outstanding player honors in the NCAA women's basketball tournament.

Ogunbowale floated a 3-pointer from the corner with 0.1 seconds left Sunday, lifting the Irish to their second women's basketball title with a thrilling, 61-58 comeback victory over Mississippi State in the NCAA championship game.

It was the second straight game in which Ogunbowale, a junior guard, hit a shot in the final second to carry the Irish to victory. Her jumper with one second remaining in overtime knocked off previously unbeaten UConn in the semifinals on Friday.

On Sunday, with the score tied, Ogunbowale took an inbounds pass from Jackie Young, dribbled twice toward the corner and, closely guarded, lofted home an off-balance 3 in front of the Notre Dame bench. It was close to the same spot on the court where she took down the Huskies, too.

"It just felt right," said Ogunbowale, who scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half. "I practice late-game all the time. I just ran to Jackie and said, 'Throw it to me. Throw it to me.'"

Ogunbowale, who scored 27 points in the win over UConn, made the Final Four all-tournament team, along with teammate Jessica Shepard. Rounding out the team were Mississippi State's Teaira McCowan and Victoria Vivians and UConn's Napheesa Collier.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
