Amateurish opinions about the next game:
Assuming Brianna can't go, or at the best is severely hobbled, Muffet is obviously limited in her "tools" to create a game plan defensively. Here's how OSU has been beaten in the past:
A). They lost six games: South Carolina, Baylor in November by 12 and 17. Miami and UConn in December by 5 and 19. Michigan State in January by 19. Purdue in March by 11.
B). South Carolina beat them by having two guards go scoring nuts. Kelsie Mitchell (KM) had 27, with Cooper and Calhoun helping a lot. OSU was 7-27 from three, and 17-24 from the line. As the season progressed, it becomes obvious that you should try to limit both of these latter, but USCar won anyway.
C). Baylor won by rebounding their brains out --- a boards massacre. KM=17 points. OSU = 4-14 from three, and 22-29 from the line. A disturbing thing about this game, however, is that OSU had their beast center (Mayunga) playing and she effectively banged with Baylor, getting double-digit boards --- she's on-again off-again healthy (did not play vs Kentucky) but we could use her on the bench as a bit of BBall justice for Brianna's and Kat's injuries.
D). Miami won in OT, scoring at will, but little D. KM=29 points; Cooper 17 plus a bunch of rebounds --- Mayunga DNP. 8-28 from three; 15-27 from the line.
E). UConn won by "simply" playing a very clean game. Most stats were fairly equal, but they allowed only 6-22 from three, and 3-9 from the line. KM had 23 and Cooper 15. Mayunga had 13 and 15 rebounds. Even with those numbers, OSU not getting many threes nor foul shots gave them no chance.
F). MSU beat them by Tori Jankoska taking Mitchell and everybody else to school (42 points.) KM had only 13. MSU outrebounded them 52-40 despite Mayunga's 15. OSU was 6-24 from three, and 23-34 from the line.
G). Purdue beat them by having the good fortune of Mayunga not playing, plus taking a page from UConn. Purdue was 8-11 from three; OSU 3-23. Purdue was 21-23 from the line; OSU 7-15. KM had 9 points!!! 1-12 from three. Cooper stepped up with 18 and 10 rebounds.
Conclusions? OSU is dependent upon KM scoring a bunch and Cooper strongly supporting. Otherwise they are not consistent. They want to shoot threes and get to the line, but when they don't they suffer. Mayunga is important on the boards. Cooper is almost the only other rebounder of any consistency. Mayunga is surprisingly not much of a scorer (so far anyway.) This team is not good at ball sharing (pretty poor generally at assisting shots). Part of this is because KM is so talented that she becomes like the early Michael Jordan --- dominating the ball (gunning a la early season Arike) and having many of her teammates standing around watching.
What does Muffet do? Something WAY better than I can think of certainly. Before Brianna got hurt, I would have immediately said: create gimmick zones based on 0ne-two-two principles (especially if they didn't have Mayunga to menace the back-side boards) and shift regularly into box-and-ones. The One-two-two is supposed to max out against the three shooting as it "rings the three-point line." If OSU doesn't have a player who likes to get into Kat's typical position (foul-line half-circle) and shoot, that could be REALLY effective in theory. However, KM probably would still slash it. That's why Boxing her, maybe triangle and three even (adding Cooper) could give them trouble.
I'll bet Muffet tries starting a conventional looking unit (i.e. two posts) but if Brianna can't go, and Kat's still limited, I can't imagine how we'd do that all game --- particularly since Boley doesn't rebound. Whatever Coach does, she can't afford a defense which gets Jackie into foul trouble --- because Jackie is the best rebounder on the team, particularly now. This game looks even more like rebounding by committee than usual. If we can limit KMs slashing, the One-two-two could help us a little because the wings (who should be Lindsay and Jackie) are positioned in that system to crash the DBoards (depending on which side the ball's on, the other wing crashes down the middle. Right now Jackie and Lindsay will have to grab the ball. It would be nice if Erin could channel her Inner Bill Laimbeer, but I don't think that there is any of that in her.
