Yo TT, isn't this based off of conversations from the Irish Illustrated forum? If so, it is pretty preliminary and certianly not set in stone. Pardon me if I am wrong, but isnt a title of "ND vs USC To Be a Night Game" a little premature? It makes it sound like it is final, which it is not.

How true is this? Are these just rumors from other fans or actual reports? That would be sick by the way.

From what I have heard, a poster on Irish Illustrated brought up that he had a "reliable source" that stated that internal talks at ND were going on concerning the possibility of this being a night game. The moderator of the forum, after apparently doing some due diligence, said that the poster was correct. Someone correct me if there is more to it than this.

That being said, I would say that it is very preliminary at this point. I wouldn't get too excited yet, but as everyone knows, when there is smoke.... sometimes there is fire.

What could possibly be better for ND football than beating Michigan in their stadiums first ever night game, then beating USC in primetime in South Bend? Sign me up, I love the thought there.

This would be beyond awesome to the max. ND = sharks, USC = sheep. We never look back because we don't have necks. Necks are for sheep.

Somebody at ND might be "talking" but I don't see this happening. We had this discussion about a month ago. We have it most every year. Here's a link to the recent thread:

http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/not...games-ever-possibility.html?highlight=Bearman

A night game flies in the face of ND's "culture" AND the Bearman lawsuit that shaped some of it. Here's the link to the applicable post on the Bearman lawsuit that has greatly influenced ND's policy on crowd management at football games:

http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/not...-night-games-ever-possibility.html#post463482

Not going to happen regardless of the NBC contract.

Irish1958's comment is actually an understatement. Many people drive long hours to and from ND games. UND does not want them to start driving home at midnight. Think Officer McCarthy's driving safety announcement here. Add to that alcohol consumption and arrests go up significantly at night games. UND has stated that night games on campus are not consistent with the "family culture that are part of the ND game experience.

Whether you agree with position or not, it isn't going to change. Simply look at ND's increasing enforcement of underage drinking, intoxication enforcement, and tailgating curtailment. In 1983 UND lost a landmark legal battle that was in litigation for 4 years, Bearman v. University of Notre Dame. After a game in 1979, Mr and Mrs Bearman were walking outside the stadium where they had just attended an ND game. An intoxicated person fell into Mrs. Bearman and she broke her leg. They sued and the courts held UND was responsible. UND should have known that people drink before and after football games and UND should have provided better security and crowd control measures. (think about that the next time you're at a game and and an usher and a South Bend cop take your friend "who was only a little high" out of the stadium.

"Bearman" is a case study today in Risk Analysis, Crowd Control, Alcohol Consumption at public events, etc. UND won't publicly mention the Bearman suit in discussing night games but it's a primary why they won't happen on campus.

I have a suspicion that BK is pushing the envelope in a lot of areas, and I'm 100% okay with that.

I understand why a night game might not happen or why it won't, but we should be able to make this happen.

Especially if it's announced months and months in advance.

A night game would also be great for the local economy.

A night game means more people would be interested in getting a hotel, which means them buying gas, food, etc the day of the game and the day after the game.

Yeah you might not be able to stay right in South Bend, but I'm sure there is enough within 30-45 minutes.

Have you tried getting a hotel room in the area on a football weekend since the stadium was expanded? The number of rooms did not increase correspondingly with the additional seats.

Keep in mind you're talking tens of thousands of additional people needing beds and the hotel industry doesn't rent rooms for one night on a game weekend. You are required to buy a couple of nights.

Also keep in mind that a night game doesn't result in additional restaurant meals as Saturday night meals would be lost as there would be no post game crowd. The bars would probably lose business as well as the crowds that would be spending money for 6 or 8 hours after a game wouldn't be there. You might get some of the revenue back IF the tailgaters left campus en masse to watch the game at bars (something they don't seem to do much of now).

I don't know if it would cost the city and county more, perhaps so, as the late hours might cost them additional overtime.

It would not be an economic windfall.
