Isn't this exactly the way we always screamed for the hiring process to go with BK? Do a true national search - don't just go for the guys that have a connection to or comfort level with the head coach - narrow it down to a couple of guys that are really good - pick the best. That's what this board and every other ND centric message board has wanted. Now it is happening and people are losing it.

Uhh I like Heacock but he is the definition of connection and comfort level to HC lol

Heacock is one of the most well respected defensive minds in the college game. He is who other elite coaches go to to learn how to stop the spread. Teams HAVE been trying to get him, but he has stayed loyal to Campbell and stayed at a place he was comfortable, much like Elston or HH.

Except that Iowa State isn't a destination job of any magnitude for any coach and Ames, Iowa isn't a destination location for anybody.

Again, I said he may end up being a good DC. But at least concede that a 61 year old coach with nothing outstanding on his resume is not an automatic home run hire, and it is fair to be scrutinized.

Glad we've already decided it's gonna be terrible.

If you're Elston its terrible. You've spent years recruiting and coaching guys to make plays behind the line of scrimmage and they bring in a guy whose DL is trained to occupy blockers so the LBs and safeties can make the tackle.

That's my theory as to why he left anyway. And after they implement this defense in spring practice we'll probably lose players when they realize what the new defense entails.

A good defense at a non entity program like Iowa St isn't what ND needs to get to the top. And this guy is 61 so I don't see him changing.

lol. Your takes are priceless. So now our new head coach who was previously a D-coordinator doesn't understand how to find a good defensive coordinator or use the talent on his roster? And since he's going to allow this to occur all spring, we're going to lose players because they're going to realize we are running a shit system with clueless coaches.

Do I have that right?

He’s not changing because he’s 61 even though he changed his whole defensive scheme when he was like 58 lol? Damn 60 must be a tough bridge to cross

For Heacock to turn it down there is just a different level in recruiting and time dedication you need to go to be DC here versus ISU, and he must just not want to. That or he really doesn’t like half his staff decided plus MF oversight.

My understanding is that he's been offered the ND job (and others) and not taken them, so not a unique thing for ND. I don't think the door is closed on him taking the ND job yet either.

I knew both Jim and John in my coaching days. Neither have a personality though Jim was slightly better. John took over for Tressel at YSU and I have a couple friends that coached with him. He is a screamer and a lunatic. Would yell so much he would spit up blood. I can't see how he is a successful recruiter because he has no personality.

I can understand that and appreciate it.

At his age though, I'm not sure how many more opportunities will be on the horizon for him. Especially at the college level. Maybe the dude truly loves Ames and/or Campbell.

For FS, a career position coach finally and coincidentally gets two elite 2023 DL to commit right when MF gets the DC job... And you guys act like he's irreplaceable.

BK hired Van Gorder and passed on Elston twice. MF once. Thats all I need to know.

If he doesn't, there are other guys out there.

You want a young guy who knows schemes and will recruit his ass off, Doug Belk is your man. He's going to get into a P5 program and make the most of the opportunity.

His background began with DBs, which I get is a huge problem for some dudes on this board.
