Anybody else see Ja Morant 2.0 in this kid?
Not sure he's that athletic haha.

Solid player on the offensive end, but will need to work on his overall effort and defensive presence moving forward. He can def get his shot at this level at any point, so that's a positive in Notre Dame's case as they don't have really have anyone who can do that consistently.

Hard to get excited about a kid that's within miles from campus when Brey's recruiting efforts are lazy and nonexistent.

Brey said he is focusing his recruiting efforts on local kids. So yea, his failed recruiting tactics are about to show (again) when this kid commits elsewhere.

Recruiting is so embarrassingly bad right now. Mike Brey has offered *checks notes* three kids in the 2021 class and two of those kids are in South Bend. The third is Caleb First out of Fort Wayne and I give Notre Dame about a 1% chance of getting him.

We waited to long to get involved with Furst.

Never had any inclination that ND was even remotely in the hunt.

We only offered him 15 months after Purdue did. Good thing we were focusing on Indiana kids.

That makes absolutely no sense why we weren’t in on him at the beginning. There’s a bunch of great players that live in Indiana and Chicago area. Basketball has more value in the north then football does and we get what 1 of those top 100 players once every 4 years. Unacceptable.

I get that academics is a big turn off for high end basketball players but isn’t duke a good academic school?
Makes no sense to me

Mike Brey is an extremely lazy recruiter. Can’t wait to see what he does when Blake Wesley goes to Louisville. JR Konieczny should do himself a favor and start looking elsewhere. This program has gone to shit in a hurry and there isn’t an end to this in site.

I'd normally agree with you, but unfortunately, he's not wrong.

Brey has gotten three (3) commitments over the course of three (3) years (all of them 3-star kids).

If you're going to be relying on developing three-star guys and going to be late to the game trying to recruit good in-state players, you need better numbers, period.

Brey has done A LOT of good for ND basketball during his tenure... but he's letting the future get away from him, and in a jaw-droppingly irresponsible way, imo.

I don't think Brey is doing a good job on the trail but if you are talking about the 19', 20', and 21' classes that's a little misleading as the 21' class isn't done.. Technically, the 20' class isn't either. And, JR (lone 21' commit) is a 4 star on 247 composite. It also seems somewhat convenient to exclude the 18' class from this conversation as it's part of the reason why they didn't push for more 'bodies' in the 19'. The 18' class was 5 guys. Which 4 of them were 4 stars.

With that said, I agree with the general sentiment that Brey seems to be captaining a directional less ship with regards to recruiting. Not much rhyme or reason to it, at least that I can see. The 21' class needs to have some building blocks and here's to hoping he can pull that off. Spring eval period will be huge for ND, IMO.

He gets a pass for '19. Brey basically said that his strategy for '19 was to shoot for 5* type of guys, because 4* or 3* guys were probably not going to want to sit behind the '18 class given it's size and talent.

I realize '20 and '21 aren't done yet, but the results are discouraging. I'm from Fort Wayne and the apparent lack of effort on Furst was frustrating.

We had consistently heard for years that the basketball facilities were hampering recruiting. Given the pub that Brey was getting and the new facilities, a quality class in '18, I was certainly hoping for more than what we've gotten so far.

The 2018 class is an outlier and the more I look at it, the harder it is for me to believe that Brey could put that class together. Now if only they could play to their ranking....

The 2020 class is a bunch of plan z guys so its hard to get excited about them. Brey has a track record of guys to overachieve, maybe he can do that with Zona and Taylor.

The 2021 class might make me vomit if something doesn't change. I never hear about Brey or the staff recruiting during the season unless it is local. Meanwhile, when ACC opponents are in South Bend they are out seeing Blake Wesley when he's playing. Do we hear about Brey doing that when they have a game on the east coast? I don't think so.

Brey saying "he's focusing on local talent" is a terrible excuse for not going out and casting a wider net. He landed JR, that's awesome. Blake Wesley is on the verge of blowing up and I'd be surprised if he stays in South Bend. And Caleb Furst just committed to Purdue. Brey has offered 3 kids in 2021; they are all in-state and two are in South Bend. That number needs to be WAY higher. Virginia, a similar school, has already offered 6 guys.

To go back to Brey's hilarious "focusing on local talent" comment. Let's see how well he's doing with landing local talent:

Trey Galloway from Culver? IU
Jaden Ivey, who's mom was a long time coach for Muffet? Purdue. That was an embarrassingly bad recruiting loss.
Isaiah Stewart from La Lumiere? Washington
JR Konieczny from South Bend? Notre Dame
Blake Wesley from South Bend? Undecided

So Mike Brey is a sizzling 1 for 5 with all that local talent. This is all with La Lumiere (a national basketball power) being 45 minutes away and a constant flow of local talent in the NIC almost every year. It should almost be like Texas in football, Brey shouldn't have to look outside the state for players.

Well, they are only Sophomores. John Mooney wasn't much of a Sophomore, now was he? A lot of basketball in front of those guys.

And, again, I'm not disagreeing with the overall theme that he's not doing a good enough job but when it comes to comments like the bolded it's just fairly ridiculous. Right now, no ACC team has more than 1 commit in the 21' class. None. ND has a composite 4 star commit and ranked 5th in the conference.

So, to say that makes you want to vomit seems crazy outlandish. I'm sorry, but it does. What you are doing is projecting your frustration on recruiting misses from past onto something that is very hard to judge at this point. Having skepticism due to past misses? Sure. Acting as if it's over? Seems like a huge reach.

For future classes the Spring/Summer eval periods for basketball are insanely huge. If nothing changes between now and the end of those, then yes, vomit away.

I'll also add, only 6 teams in the conference even have a 21' commit at this point.

I'll also add that we have the least amount of extended offers of anyone in the ACC for the '21 class.

Definitely noted. Does anyone know if there has been contact with a group without offers? Is there a target group of guys that they plan to ‘view’ during the next eval period? Basketball offers are quite a bit different, for most schools, than say that in football. Next eval period is huge.

Beating a dead horse here, but I looked at the following conferences and nobody had less offers extended than ND for the '21 class. One team actually only had 3 as well. That was Oregon St. I guess I can take solace in the fact that we aren't alone. Go Beavers.

I am usually a Brey supporter, but I have been very frustrated with his recruiting efforts as of late.

Exhibit A.
Logan Duncomb. I know some people that are pretty close to his recruitment. He would have crawled to Notre Dame but they have barely shown any interest. A 4 star, catholic kid from Cincinnati who loves Notre Dame, will end up at Xavier or OSU. So frustrating.

Brey read your comments so he got off the couch to go recruit.

Given that Blake is the only uncommitted offer we have out right now, I can only picture Mike Brey as Jerry Maguire.

Perfect form with the right hand on the shoulder, of who I assume is Blake's mother, to block the right side. Moves mother's back to camera. Cash in left hand being placed inside of the mother's coat.

Best recruiter EVER!
