Also, real no good time or place for this (don't believe the new season's thread has been created)

Rex's mom passed away from brain cancer a few days ago. Thought's and prayers to the family. I've never met him or his family, but I have friends that have and per beat writers, it sounds like she was an amazing person and a great family.

Heartbreaking - always been a fan of Rex and his attitude, especially in the face of adversity. Thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

Happy for the kid and for the Irish. Hopefully this signals that Brey had staff have shifted their recruiting strategy a bit.

As a fan, you’d probably like to see 5 recruits in the 2020 class committed when all is said and done. Elijah Taylor was a good start. Matt Zona, a big from NJ, seems headed to Vandy, ND, or an Ivy League school. The biggest fish though would be Hunter Dickinson by far. Without him, the class won’t be too pretty. It would be nice to have some guards on the radar but the staff doesn’t have any traction with any of the offered kids left except for maybe Puff Johnson but he’s not going to ND. He’s probably going to UA or UNC. Gotta hope the second wave of recruiting gets some good prospects on board cause right now it’s Hunter Dickinson or bust. Hopefully they pick up all 3 of the big targets and then get to work on finding a couple of guards either later or in the transfer portal.

Notre Dame basketball is on the verge of a dark age with the way recruiting has gone the last few years. Pretty damn embarrassing how bad Brey has done on the trail.

I was on a tangent about this for like over a year. But these last two pick ups will keep me quiet for a while as I am now pleased. These are the kind of guys that will succeed at Notre Dame.

Recruiting has definitely fallen off for Brey. Unfortunately he can’t leave for the NBA like the fellow good-guy John Beilein but it’s an uphill battle to recruit guys now in Power 5 basketball when you don’t cheat. Brey just needs to find some ND-fitting guys and develop them over time. Losing Hunter Dickinson could be a killer blow to a recruiting haul as Duke just offered and will likely overtake ND and any other suitors. ND needs 3 more dudes in the class preferably. Hopefully they find some more dudes between now and fall signing day and if not, they’ve got the spring and transfers to look at. They’ll have to get creative. I think they’ll be pretty good this year.

Don't forget Coles, big man from Texas who OV'd with Taylor. We have a real shot, probably better than we have for Dickinson.

Highly doubtful we take five. Brey doesn't like a 13 man roster. Maybe one more although we currently are just in on Coles and Dickinson.

So I guess white boy can shoot it. Being 6’9”, 240 pounds I thought he’d be almost strictly play at the rim. Turns out I couldn’t have been more wrong. A great mid range game and is respectable behind the 3 point line too. Bret might have something in Zona.

I think this is the type of recruiting that's going to get Brey back on track. At some point, with the end of the OAD era coming soon, when these guys are Sophomores or Juniors they'll no longer be matched up against the top 25-35 freshman. It's going to water down the immediate talent impact and make programs that have experienced talent, almost immediately more competitive. So, at some point, it's going to be Brey's top 40-100 type prospects that are Juniors and Seniors versus Calipari's top 40-100 players that are freshman.

Now, eventually, those programs will have guys that stay longer but in the meantime Coach K and Cal are not going to stop recruiting the OAD's and they'll have some young watered down rosters once this happens. So, there should be a period of time that this could greatly benefit programs like ND's.

Wow, I hadn't followed this at all. Based on the handful of articles I read just now it really sounds like the one-and-done era is going to end soon. Thankfully.

Yep, seems like it'll be either the 21' or 22' class. The year this goes down is going to have a lot of the major programs scrambling to either fill rosters with grad transfers or they'll just have to take some lumps against more mature and previously thought of inferior programs.

Unless they can get paid for endorsements. That will change everything. And nobody knows how this will shake out.

I doubt that changes the decision for a majority of the top 25 HS players. They'll get those anyways and get paid to play in the NBA/G league. More than likely you'll start seeing more investments in the G League. Bigger contracts for players to mature while it doesn't impact the salary cap.

Also, keep in mind the massive drop off in talent between putting 3 of the top 5 (Duke last year) players on the same team or 3 of the top 30 (27, 28, and 29 for example). They aren't even comparable.

So true - can't happen soon enough either.

Over/under on Coach K retiring?

Brey is getting the type of kids that are a good fit for ND. If anyone is expecting the 5* or one & done kids you are crazy, ND will never get those kids.
