It’s likely Al Golden but Joe Rossi is still an option. Golden either by personal choice or Bengals choice has not interviewed and won’t till after the Super Bowl.

It's gonna be Al Golden unless he gets an NFL DC job in which case it's gonna be Rossi.

My assumption would be that, if this happens, the Mannings made it happen, and that'll be a huge tell as to where Arch is heading.
The Mannings wanted Cut at ole miss. That was his dad's, grandfather's, and one uncle's first option. The family has maintained a good relationship with Sarkisian for awhile though now. Cut going to texas doesn't quite mean Arch will go there yet, but will probably shut the door on him going to ole miss.

...I see there are dedicated threads to specifics now...carry on
it's nice to have everything in the one catch all IMO.

just cant believe this thread is still living and breathing. Never would have thought that after the whole rah rah post MF hire.

the carousel doesnt even seem close to stopping yet, so who knows who new becomes available or that we need to replace in the coming weeks/months.

lots of folks speculated whether he might like a gig like this at ND as a senior advisor to Rees but hes likely heading to Texas now and that might put them in the driver seat for Arch Manning considering the family ties

That's exactly why he was hired. Sark has a good relationship with the Mannings which is why Texas is one of the finalists. Adding Cutliffe just improved their odds. Either way, it's a win win for Sark.

Is DC the only current opening on the staff? As I think it over it seems the only one (I won't say left cause that could change every day).

Maybe it's just me, but I have now talked myself into Golden so much that I will be upset if it's not him now. If, and I know it's a big if, Freeman wants to not be as heavily involved on defense, having someone with the depth of experience Golden has will be such an asset.

I may be drunk or high (both?) But I swear to sweet baby Jesus that a week or 2 ago Mike Frank was beside himself saying how MFMF need to hire a DC, like NOW, then yesterday says, there is no big hurry and Golden still needs to get on campus or something. Just a full 180, didn't slow down, just grabbed the wheel and went full send. It was bizarre even for him.

Golden's comments sure make it appear that it's just a matter of the clock reaching 0:00 at the SB for this to be finalized.

Could part of it be that the are now in a "dead period" recruiting wise while two weeks ago they were able to recruit? I think once Feb 1 hit, it wasn't a big deal because they can't recruit.

Could be, but I think it is more that Frank changes his opinion depending on what way the wind is blowing. That and I think sometimes he forgets to take his anxiety meds before they record.

My only request is that Golden wears a tie on the sideline

Yeah, I'm there too and want him in his previous college attire. Even if he's in the booth and not on the sidelines.

I think it's him and based on his answers at the podium I'm thinking it is probably done in theory. Just waiting for the SB to be played.

His default option is "OMG bad things are going to happen again" rinse and repeat.

I am especially worried when he sounds like he just took a hit off of the helium tank. That's when you know it's bad. That being said, I really do enjoy their POD Cast.

I am probably in the minority here, but I am a much bigger fan of the DC/OC being up in the booth. If you have ever been on a sideline it is not exactly an eagle eye view of what is going on. I've always been curious as to why a guy would want to be on the field calling plays. If you have trusted LT's you can still get your message/point across. IE: Tommy upstairs and Lance on the field.

I would defer to the individual when it comes to this. If you are more comfortable upstairs, be there. If you think your particular version of your squad in a particular season or game needs you on the sidelines, do that. Some guys just have a comfort level with one or the other.

When I coached varsity HS, the DC (who was also LB coach) was on the sidelines with the kids while I was in the booth (DBs) with the other DB coach. DL coach was on the sidelines. Our head coach was OC and had the OL and QB coach up in the booth.

Neither of them ever listened to us. LOL.

I will be pumped if Golden is the new DC/LB coach.

My concern though, is that O'Connell has been announced, for a while now, as the new head coach of the Vikings. Why can't Golden be announced? He's had the same opportunities to interview as O'Connell, and Cincinnati to to South Bend is a hell of a lot closer than LA to Minneapolis. If he can't be announced because he hasn't actually been ok'd/interviewed/approved or even consented on his part, then it seems like MF (and us) are counting our eggs before they've hatched. If everything has to wait until after the Super Bowl, then Golden seems like he could very much so be a free agent and considering all options on the table for him. If that's the case, then it could be ND DC vs. multiple other opportunities for himself, or put another way, ND vs. the field.

Maybe I'm missing something or am overthinking things. But the optics of this don't seem to indicate it's anywhere close to a foregone conclusion that Golden will be the next DC at ND.

Reading between the Loy lines, either Golden takes the job after the super bowl or it goes to Rossi. I think that is probably why Freeman is comfortable to wait right now because Rossi doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

Freeman (maybe Swarbrick has sold him on this) must badly want that extensive head coaching experience that Golden brings. Because if we're just talking purely about calling plays and coaching defense, it seems like Rossi is the right choice right now.

Probably one of two things:
a) Since the Blueticks & Redbones haven't sniffed a story of them meeting somewhere they may have only had a phone or Zoom meeting and MF wants to finalize things in person (if they haven't met f2f).
or
b) Golden just wants to be respectful of the Bengals and not let this be any type of distraction.

I'm leaning towards B.

It's a really good point. Only difference that I can tell is you have the OC of the NFC Champions becoming an NFL HC. Golden is an LB coach of the AFC Champions and it's a college DC job where HR likes to do thorough checks before going official.

I think it winds up being Al Golden in the end, and as much as I was on the Belk train, I'd be good with Golden in the end I think. He picked up Temple from being a doormat and recruited Miami well, and it was post Randy Shannon Miami at that for all the overly sanctimonious pearl clutchers out here. That was as a head coach. His recent NFL experience along with prior college HC experience makes him a very good fit on paper.

I like Rossi and Lukabu as well. I'd really be happy with any of the three at this point. I just think it's going to be Golden when all is said and done.
