Even if Mason is the guy, hard to imagine this being a long term thing. I would imagine it would go one season most likely. If its Belk I can imagine him being like three year guy like Lea. Mason would just get the ND job to have HC opportunity in a year but checks the box of a experience candidate Freeman can probably learn from a lot.

You forgot the italics on Freeman learning from Derrick Mason

I'm not sure experience being a DC is necessarily so important. Freeman has that and can be as engaged as he wants in schematics on that side of the ball, much like BK often was on offense. So, agree a mediocre retread isn't worth much just because he's been a DC.

But having someone on the staff with experience as a head coach, or even with program-wide responsibilities at a major P5 program, that could certainly be valuable in all sorts of ways, including to serve as a sounding board for our first-time head coach (assuming they get along). That makes Mason intriguing.

Derek Mason is a square peg.

Provide Kevin Steele with a SkyMiles card, you cowards.

I feel the opposite. I think the appeal of Mason is that he would be steady, and potentially long term. He's a quality DC. He's a total joke as a head coach though. Mason was given a long leash at vandy, and he got worse. No school of any football consequence will offer him a head job any time soon, if ever.

Mason won't work fools. Freeman already told Jason / Justin A and Foskey that things wouldn't change much for them and Mason does things a lot different on the d-line.

Watch some of this: https://youtu.be/S-E3ricFb6M

The Auburn interior d line excluding slanting / pass rush stunting always engage with a bull rush technique because they are responsible for both gaps on each side of the o-linemem they are engaging . They are very good at this game to their credit.

Compare that to Notre Dame where they do more of a gap penetration style. Auburn wants to tie up the o-line, ND wants to get past the o-line. A little bit simplistic but that's the general idea.

This wouldn't affect Foskey but would effect the DT, NG, and Big End.

Good stuff.

I also think about the context that Freeman wants to be more hands on. I cannot see an instance where someone like Mason would be eager to sign up for a role with Freeman constantly looking over his shoulder.

Mason and Tigers head coach Bryan Harsin have not been on the same page lately with staffing and philosophy -- both professionally and personally -- sources tell 247Sports.

For those that don’t want Mason, I feel like this clearly points to we could likely get him if we wanted to. Now is just if MF actually wanted to

Getting Mason is fine if one or two things are the case:

1) If he defers to Freeman and Al Washington on d-line play, d-line / LB gap responsibilities. And maybe he would.

2) Foskey is an edge player so it wouldn't effect him too much. But Jason A really should of been told to leave if the plan is to bring in Mason and point #1 doesn't happen. Jason is more an athletic, strength + quickness DT tackle, than a pure strength / leverage bull rush DT that you need to be in Mason's defense on run downs.

It's a real disservice to the young man.

I was coming here to post this.

I haven't heard/read anything from an insider yet, but I guess that makes Belk the runaway candidate?

Marcus Freeman seems to be waiting for someone/something though. It is kind of driving me nuts not knowing who has interviewed for the position.

I thought about this yesterday could Todd Bowles from Tampa Bay be an option? We just offered his son Troy Bowles?

The last time he coached in college was Grambling and it was over 20 years ago. He's probably making $4M a year as a DC right now or somewhere thereabouts. His first shot at HC in the NFL was the Jets, where just about everyone fails, and he SHOULD get another shot at an NFL HC gig. Whether he does or not we'll see.

So in the end, no, he's not an option.

It could be Mason's people getting smoke going where there is no fire to speed up something else they want that is pending.

Do I hope it means Belk is leaning to ND? Absolutely.

I don't think Belk "leaning" to ND means anything. Belk is coming to ND if offered the job. By all reports, Freeman is taking a step back weighing all options. Is in no rush to fill it.

The rush is that Miami is after Belk as well. Is he willing to wait?

What/who could he be waiting for, I wonder?? It’s not like NFL guys haven’t been interviewing for jobs even if their teams are still in the playoffs. Both Bills coordinators and both Bucs coordinators have interviewed head coaching jobs.

BK hired Matt House who is still coaching LBs for the Chiefs weeks ago.

Is he expecting a head coach to leave or get fired somewhere which would make a DC available?

This is the most secretive search of all time.

Yea, there might be additional info that I’m not aware of, but this one just seems a little strange

After the announcement they were prioritizing Heacock and that fell thru I expect we will hear nothing until the ink is dry on the contracts. ND can be a bit of a sticker with the vetting process

Nah there will be leaks when they know who the guy is. Heacock was leaked and they never even got to the point where they were even that close negotiating a contract.

Yeah, probably so. I thought that I saw where Todd Bowles has an interview coming up soon for the Bears HC position.

Eberflus from the Colts is the leading candidate for the Bears, but the Jags are talking to him as well.

He has his second interview with the Jags today and it is in person. The Bears don't have a GM. Hiring a head coach before the GM just seems really...dumb....and something the Chicago NFL Football Team would do.

Numerous sources are saying he was offered the job though. That’s usually when the “prioritizing” or “focusing” is reported is when a job offer is made

Dodds from colts is one of favorites for bears GM job as well. I would imagine there would be some synergy there regardless of timing. Polian is leading this search so I am certainly banking on it having some colts flavor.

Dodds withdrew himself from the Bears GM job yesterday.
