All the DB coaches being floated for DC make more sense now .

You can hire someone just to be DC like Elko was in 2017.

You can permanntly give Nick L both the LB and special teams role he has assumed for this bowl game with Lauranitus in a GA type role working with LBs / helping Nick.

This makes the 10 assistant coach number work out.

Cinci's defense performed heroically given the talent disparity. Had their offense been able to sustain some drives, they would have made it interesting. But Cinci's OL just couldn't hang.

Agree about Mike Tressel. Cincy was outmanned and just couldn't stop the run.

One big pass was a wheel route against a Cover 1 (hard for FS diagnose to get over the top on that), you need to be in Cover 3 for that. With my 8th graders we primarily stick to Cover 1 and even at an age where QBs and route running aren't that refined yet the slot wheel route is problematic unless we expect it going in and really practice covering it. At D1 college level if you call Cover 1 and outside WR running a post really holds the safety, you're kind of screwed.

But Cover 1 is just a standard base defense call, it's never really a bad call. Just an unlucky call for what Bill O'Brian called that play.

Anyway Tressel called this one good. I think he could of kept em under 20 with a Mike Elston and Matt Balis d-line.

I'm not sure MF can fire him if he wants to. Wasn't TR hired first, the implication being that a condition of MFs deal was to take him on as his offensive coordinator?

It wasn't a condition of his hire. But Tommy just signed an extension .

He did adjust tho, but it wasn't needed. The 2nd half O was completely different than the first half O

So obviously promoting Elston to DC and Nick L to LB coach for 2022 is a bad move.

Coach Freeman isn't Bob Davie because Davie couldn't recruit but Davie had pretty good Ds at ND. He was just stoke in the stone age offensively and as mentioned couldn't recruit.

But this could be a Charlie Strong situation. Good DC , good recruiter, who had bad defenses when he was head coach.

If Marcus Freeman the head coach can't replace Marcus Freeman the DC and the coordinator we're going to have problems.

He did adjust tho, but it wasn't needed. The 2nd half O was completely different than the first half O

Actually, OSU adjusted and they played more press. In the first half their corners were 10+ yards off the line of scrimmage and Coan took the free yards.
Once OSU moved up, Tommy didn't adjust.

One thing that is the equalizer in this situation is a mobile quarterback. There were HUGE running lanes all second half if Jack just took them. No, he wasn't going to get huge gains, but 5+ yards instead of throwing it away of forcing into tight coverage would've made a world of difference.

My one wish is they gave TB12 a series or two, once the offense stalled in the second half.
Next year we see no weaknesses on offense if the receivers stay.

This is the same defense we had in September and October. The difference is we didn't play an anemic offense like we did all of November. People were drooling after we shut down the likes of Stanford, GT, Navy, and a QB-less Virginia but it was all an illusion. We had the most favorable 4 game stretch we could possibly have for a struggling defense that month. Today guys were out of position, poor tackling, bad angles, not looking for the ball, all hallmarks of a bad defense.

Imo, Austin is fine and still has room to grow. I was mostly talking about both freshman staying because Styles is a superstar in the making. He's unstoppable in the slot.


Lenzy just isn't a good football player, but he could be a solid 3/4 depth piece behind Austin and Colzie.

Lenzy has been a liability all year, save maybe one or two games. Glad they got Styles involved more. I’m expect him to lead the WR group next year no matter who comes back. Colzie, Styles and Austin could be a formidable trio. I hope they can develop Merriwether early for another consistent weapon. With Buchner at the help the running game will open up for him and a solid RB room and a stout line.

Austin is just too inconsistent, he doesn't show up enough to warrant being the #1 receiver. Doesn't get separation, he's feast or famine. Prior to that last drive he had just one other catch the 2nd half, he struggled once Ok St. tightened the coverage. Same for Lenzy, except it was worse...it was something like 0-5 2nd half until he caught the pass on the last drive. If Austin and Lenzy staying means we lose Styles and/or Colzie I'd rather they both move on. They just haven't proven enough. WR depth be damned, we can play all 2 TE sets next year for all I care. Put our best playmakers on the field.
