In Tee Shepard's Recruiting Profile, TheFlyingAlamo proposed naming the 2011 Defense, "The Big Green Monster" stealing the name for the hideous wall in the bandbox stadium built in a swamp.

Who'sAWildManNow suggested "The Banshees".

Before the Defense Naming was brought up by TFA, OMM had commented about the recruit, "Corners like Shepard are the missing piece in the Beast to come". Shepard with Lynch & Co might well be The Beast.

But rather than chew up a recruit's profile with banter about The Banshees, The Beast, etc, here is a thread to Name The Defense. Have at it.

I was just using the Red Sox reference as an example for the record!

Good call on giving the thought it's own thread!

Ponder away my friends! Perhaps we can settle this discussion with a poll when enough quality names are thought of?

The Irish Phalanx would be appropriate for Diaco's 3-4 "no crease" defense.

Our Lady's Aegis invokes our heavenly patroness.

Bobby's Bulwark

Kelly's Curtain Wall or Kelly's Keep

Notre Dam

Seeing as the defense will likely be bailing out the offense again this year....

"Kelly's Heroes"

I'd also go with the "Kelly Green Machine"

Or

"The KGB" (Kelly Game-Breakers) -- You can't outrun them. They're everywhere.

The Sheleighly

And if we wanted to honor Manti: "Lei O Mano" [the ring of shark's teeth], the traditional Hawaiian "melee" in-fighting slashing club.

What I really hope is that our defensive captains take it upon themselves to come up with a nickname.

That then would be PIRA.

Never mind, I can't find a way to write my first three choices where enough letters would show, so you would know what I was sayin'.

And their was a skull, three barnyard, as well as several relational references in there.

"The Golden Gate"

You must pay a toll to get through, mostly in broken bones

Disclaimer: I don't condone hurting other players, but just part of a slogan

I've spent far too much time trying to contrive a way to bring Finn McCool into this mix in catchy way. No luck.

Maybe a simple "Irish Guard" would suffice.

"For where there are Irish there's loving and fighting,
And when we stop either, it's Ireland no more!
Ireland no more!"*

*Closing lines from Rudyard Kipling's poem, Irish Guards.

Actually guys, I know that you don't want to say it, but the nickname of this coming defense is "The Beast".

"The Beast".

Let's strike a balance between the fact that ND was founded by a French cleric and his compatriots in the Congregation of Holy Cross that subsequently chose to be referred to as the "Fighting Irish" in regard to their sports teams.

I've seen suggestions of "Banshees" and "Beast." Why not go with "Les Beasteés?"

Just sayin'.

Yeah. "Les Beastees." Then, dress in leotards and tutus and dare other teams to laugh at us.

DShans, you are just too funny sometimes.
