Miles speaks again

In today's South Bend Tribune, there an article where not only does Les Miles go after Gunner Kiel, but he goes after Notre Dame.

Yes, Miles is a Michigan guy who is a jerk. But who can argue with this statement:

Here's the truth: If you don't have some swagger to you and you can step into this stadium and be able to know the advantage that you're playing with the Tigers and you're leading the program that has some real weight and clout, then you really need to stay home with your brothers.

Our football program has not had real weight and clout for a long time. Notre Dame has let this happen. We can all take umbrage for Miles being indiscreet, but we cannot ignore the truth of what he is saying. Would Miles say this about USC, or Alabama? Of course not, because those universities have not allowed their program to fall to a level of mediocrity that allows the bully to trash talk to it.

Notre Dame-the Alumni, Fellows, Trustees, Administration, coaching Staff and players-needs to regain its place among the best programs that have weight and clout. Until it does, the Les Miles' of the world are going to point out the obvious in the press, and are going to show it on the field.

I hate to beat this horse again but, I am not sure what some people want Notre Dame to do with respect to SEC programs. Win? Ok, I would love to do that too, but in today's NCAA, where coaching staffs are limited in number and work weeks are limited in hours, that means you have to have the best athletes. The best athletes are in many cases located near SEC schools. Not exactly where the dome is. In addition, we as a University put a premium on graduating student athletes, we also put a premium on honoring our scholarship commitment for four years regardless of injury or lack of development. Further, we actually try to follow the rules with regard to signings and not using EE and greyshirts and JC's to finagle the numbers. If Les Miles signs 100 kids in a four year period he will have a significant advantage over us if we only sign 82.

Many will argue that we should adopt the same tactics since it is obviously not leading to any sanctions, and the SEC is well represented in the post New Years Day Bowls, but I would warn to be careful what you wish for. What would LSU or Alabama be without a good football team? Would anyone outside of Louisiana or Alabama care? We have a great University that competes at a very high level, there is clearly room to improve and I believe we can and will be on the top again, but to expect us to hold a dynastic grip on college football like we did in the past or like some SEC schools do now, would IMO not be realistic. Unless we can convince everyone else to agree to our values and our principles and our concept of what a college football team should do and what a student athlete should be. Believe me all these "bully" programs are still jealous as hell of us, and KNOW that if they held themselves to our standards or were held to our standards they wouldn't be able to cut it. We can't be doing everything wrong we are still sitting with a national television contract and what does LSU have? There is a benefit to doing things right even if it means you will not compete for the BCS trophy year in and year out. If being a dynasty or a bully program is what you expect, there are probably some other schools that will get you there faster and keep you there longer.

ND can get to point where they win 9 or10 games a year in my opinion. But they can't rise to the top. Not anymore. Those days are gone and ND did it to themselves, which is the sad part.

I think what we saw with Stanford the last couple of years is what we can hope for in the future.

Yep, it isn't close and with what happened to us last year in recruiting it really hurts us more than any other school. LSU can go grab someone from JC(If they have down year in recruiting) to plug holes that they may have.

The powers that be at ND became arrogant and decided to stiffen the requirements under Holtz and told him and the rest of the world that NOTRE DAME could do this and maintain their performance on the field. Many also say that the ND academia felt that football and Holtz were too big and they wanted to reclaim their University.

Either way, Holtz bolted after a couple of recruiting years that Lemming described as 'they will have the smartest 6-6 team in the country.' How right he would become.

ND also went cheap and lazy when it came to hiring head coaches after that. They thought that their name was enough and pretty much hired anybody who toed the line, would wag their tails like puppies for the chance to coach ND, and eventually, anybody who would take it.

I personally don't think Universities should turn their programs over to coaches. While it may be better for the football team it will, in most cases, wind up bad for the University.

Les just likes to run his mouth, and cannot stop himself. What I appreciated was the class in which Gunner simply moved on and did not fire back at LSU or Miles. Simply shows that he is more mature than Miles, even tho he is 1/3 his age. One day, Miles will look back at this and realize he made himself look like a fool.
