wow

Co-DC with Venables as a HC might not be anything more than an empty title.

Watch some good clips on Valai the other day when I posted this as I really didn’t know anything about him. This would be like going from McCollough to Seider. Homerun. I’ll post some of those clips when I get back to desktop.
If any coaches are out there, he has clinics on glazier drive.

Weird that for him being a co-DC and apparently highly thought of, I can't find any discussion about the potential move on the Oklahoma board.
Being a co-DC in Venables' system is the equivalent of being named Assistant to the Regional Manager.

Venables runs the defense and calls the plays.

And I'd imagine he will get a similar title and pay, if not a bump, at ND.

On that, from what I can find, he makes like $750k at OU, but their BoR is set to meet tomorrow and Friday in part to consider coaching contracts.

Others who will have their contracts considered include inside linebackers coach Nate Dreiling, scouting director Stacey Ford, safeties coach Brandon Hall, wide receivers coach Emmett Jones, analyst John Kuceyeski, assistant general manager Taylor Redd, defensive backs coach Jay Valai and analyst Kevin Wilson.

So, he might already be set to get some sort of raise.

What are the details that are making it not done yet? Hopefully he's not going back to Oklahoma to talk them into more money and staying. If the coaching carousel is anything like the portal I wouldn't be surprised.

For some it is. I specifically remember Elko doing it in reverse to Notre Dame.

A lateral move made no sense whatsoever. The man is managing his career with the goal of becoming a HC. His professional standing is at the highest point that it's ever been.

Making a lateral move would demonstrate exactly what? That he can do it? But he's already done it and built perhaps the best secondary in college football at ND. The money wouldn't be the prime motivator for Mickens to move. He is already extremely well compensated.

Mickens leaving ND for SC entails more risks than rewards. A bad season and Riley could get fired. Riley might not devote enough energy to the defensive side of the ball. Riley may start to meddle. The DC may have views that conflict with Mickens views.

At ND Mickens was King of his Castle and had a 20yr relationship with the HC. No way he was throwing all that away for a lateral move that posed large downside risks without any realistic early reward.

In sum leaving ND for SC would have been a dumb career move. None of career moves have been dumb so far.

I guess the SC narrative would be Mickens moves to work for Chad Bowden. Not sure that's a motivating force for Mickens as he never worked under Bowden and was at ND years before him.

My guess is what we have here is USC Fanfic.
He is too smart to go to USC from ND. Riley is a clown.

Valai is kind of in the same boat that Mickens was.

Valai has been at OU for 4 years, and there isn't much in terms of trajectory left for him in Norman.

At OU, being the co-DC in Venables' system is basically a title and nothing more. And even as a DC, you're not calling the plays.

ND's dynamic is different, because unlike Venables, Freeman doesn't run the defense, and leaves it up to Ash, and I imagine Ash is much more collaborative than Venables would be, especially since Ash and Valai are very well acquainted with one another.

Are there any Co Coordinators or Assistant Head Coaches in the NFL?

The job title stuff is for college ball.

They do it just as much in the NFL.

Here's the Bears coaching staff w/titles.

Antwaan-Randle El is the WR coach and Asst HC for them.

I'm looking back through the last few pages, ain't nobody mentioned this former Safety?! Currently a high school head coach, was coaching DBs at Brown before that as well as helping out on defensive staff at Western Michigan. He's right down the road in Chicago!

I'm surprised nobody has at least considered this. I know it's only Brown and not D1, but he's played in the NFL too and was an Irish legend. Is the concern he's not experienced or proven as a coach yet?

Is there an argument presented for that? Because regardless of outcome, someone who has never coached corners being hired to coach corners is a tough sell for best possible fit. He also has shown a desire to leave for a lateral NFL job already once, while currently interviewing for a NFL DC job. We also already employ a DC who specializes in safeties.

I get they (ISD) may like COL, and Freeman may also like him. But you would have a tough time selling me that it’s the most ideal fit as a candidate.

I can buy into it that he's had some really nice coaching experience. Worked with Minter in the NFL< did a good job coordinating Western Michigan's defense, etc. Frankly If we were bringing him in I'd want him as a Co-DC/S coach. I can't see how he'd do as a CB coach.

He is also a terrible recruiter.
