Hopefully he is leaving on good terms with Freeman. Maybe with some experience with the higher level concepts in the NFL, he can come back as DC when Ash moves on.

In an alternative universe we promote Mickens to DC last off season, none of us ever know of Chris Ash, and we look way better the first few weeks of the season and make the playoffs.

Can’t blame Mickens for making this decision, and I can understand why Coach Freeman made the decision he made last offseason.

It is what it is.
Best of luck to him.

Good for him.

The defensive backfield he left in place should be elite regardless.

Will be interesting to see who’s the new coach.

Mickens getting zero blame for Karson Hobbs, Gray, Zackery (overall lack thereof of a CB3), Stroman is one of the oddest things on this board

When Ash got the DC job over him the writing was on the wall. This is going to be a very very attractive job considering the talent + past success of Mickens. Is what it is, every successful program goes through it. Just look at Saban’s tree.

What's the story with him? Seems like going from Chargers Safety Coach to Western Michigan DC is a step down but maybe I'm undervaluing the title.

I thought the same personally. No clue if he wasn’t good for the Chargers. That said, Western’s defense was elite for MAC standards. 13 points per game over their last 11 games.

My guess is a P4 DC is his next step rather than a return to ND for DB coach, though

Who replaces him will say a lot about where the program is right now. They had to see this coming

This one is going to leave a mark.

Thank you Coach Mickens for being a tremendous coach, recruiter and representative of the team/university. Now, comes the hard part - finding a replacement who can recruit to the level of Mickens. Not an easy task for sure.

I can understand people being skittish with Ash's disastrous first impression but Freeman's hiring has been largely phenomenal. I'm probably forgetting someone but Stuckey is really the only person I can immediately think of that's a certified bad hire with hindsight. Have to trust he has someone in mind.

Ron English said he was stepping away from Louisville DC to watch his son who is a senior at Navy. Why not both?

I guess I blame the hiring process more than the selection there. He had good people on his radar but internal contract bullshit and an opinionated QB room made things difficult. Maybe that will play out again but Freeman and ND both seem to be a lot savvier about this stuff now.
