HAHAHAH ... remember when Bogs was telling us that Swarbrick was putting together this staff in anticipation of firing Kelly and keeping it for the new coach?

This call out is so petty. We have better things to freak out about.

Meh, there are good DCs out there that would gladly come build on what Elko started.

Can Kelly find one? We'll see, but they do exist.

I don't care. It goes to show that Swarbrick values only one guy in the football program: Brian Kelly.

Let's assume this was 100% about $$

If Swarbrick was unwilling to pay for a raise, wouldn't it be just as (or more) expensive to go out an outright hire a good, proven DC?

Basically, what I'm getting at is, we're going after a mid-tier candidate now, it appears.

All I'm saying is a guy came in for one year and bolted, it sucks, but I don't think the sky is falling. We had some great games defensively this year...But....We also had some pretty bad games too. We held USC to 14 points, the same USC that couldn't get a first down against OSU. We held a UGA team (with a freshman making his first start ever) to 20...we looked solid against Mich St and LSU...Other than that, it is what it is. I have a feeling when the dust settles ND will be fine, and if not... this is probably a very small issue in all of our lives.

I think that A&M is, like LSU and about 5 other schools, willing to pay whatever. Most other schools are not.

So this means there are about 5 schools we can't compete with, and a bunch of others that we won't necessarily outbid.

So we'll see. He got Elko last year, and the job catapulted him into one of the highest paying jobs in the country. That is a good selling point.

Life is too short to freak out about a DC. Hopefully Kelly will continue to act on the lessons he's learned and not revert back to a mediocre relationship hire.

Scottie Hazelton.

Who?

Took Wyoming's defense from 96th to 7th, and was Polian's DC at Nevada.

44 years old.

It's what we have all known for years. NDs admin has been/ will be responsible for the death of Notre Dame football being elite. They just won't allow it. National Title? It will never happen again and they are the reason.

You're leaving out the part where the current roster LOVES him and he is a tenacious recruiter. These things a dime-a-dozen are not.

If this was just about money it’s time to fire Jack. Because he clearly doesn’t care about the football team. The best defensive coach we had in years and would recruit his a$$ off. I am pretty sure this was one hired Kelly will not be able to make again.

So we'll see.

What's worse is A&M is about the wealthiest school with that attitude. Most SEC schools are limited threats financially because they're relatively poor, so Even MsST spending at 25x the relative levels we are barely makes them competitive, but A&M has cash for days just like we do and threw out all standards with Manziel.

Does anyone know anything about Scott Hazelton? On paper he sounds like a great candidate.

This came 2 years earlier than I had been prepared for. Was just getting excited that we had the right coaching staff and recruiting class to fit what we were looking to do. Then this shit happens. I really need to stop caring, it's killing me.

Swarbrick answers to the BoT. He doesn't set salaries at this level.

The new Tax law changes affecting colleges and coaches.

Like other non-profit organizations, colleges will be responsible for paying a 21% excise tax on annual compensation above $1 million that goes to any of the organization’s five most highly compensated employees. The tax is set to take effect on compensation earned, beginning Jan. 1. It also will be applied to certain types of what the legislation calls “parachute payments,” or separation payments like a buyout. At many FBS schools, coaches and/or the athletic director are among the institution’s five highest-paid employees and making more than $1 million.

"That’s not tax reform – that’s trying to discourage seven-figure payments to college sports figures and pick up a little revenue,” said Duke law professor Richard Schmalbeck, who has been a longstanding critic of the deduction for college-sports donations that provide seat-purchase privileges.

According to data compiled by USA TODAY Sports, in the sport of football alone, there are 90 head or assistant coaches making more than $1 million this season. It’s possible not all of those coaches are among their respective schools’ five highest-paid employees, and certain forms of deferred compensation will not be subject to the excise tax. But based on pay for the 2017 season, 65 public schools would have faced a combined total of about $30 million in tax just for their football coaches. (Private schools will be subject to the tax.)
New tax bill will impact the sports world starting with millions in costs for colleges (USA Today)

All very true, but when God started making coaches that were likable and could recruit, I'm certain he didn't stop at Elko

Well feck. ND has every moral and financial reason to outspend every program in the country and won't. Why is $2.6M/per obscene but $1.5M is not? i give up on that front.

Anyways, in some other thread I mentioned if Elko took a job, move Lea up and hire LB coach, Brad Sherrod from Wake. He's a Duke grad, has been a coordinator at Sam Houston when they were #1 in FCS. The rest of his career was all in ND's ACC footprint from Umass down to the Carolinas... where he's from.

Don't let Lea follow Elko to College Station. The roster has been revamped for this system and with Phil coming in you can't do a hard reboot and give him no D.

Me: Wow, the Elko thread is blowing up today, wonder what this is about?....

Yeah...

I am going to severely cut back on my spending on NDFB. This is a final straw for me.

This isnt about academics or integrity... this is about compensation.

ND makes a crap load of money... they even do dumb sh*t like move games to Yankee stadium for no other reason than seemingly to make even more money. There is nothing in ND's supposed values which prevents them from using more of the massive amount of money the football program generates to help the on field product.

Yup, if this is about money, which it often seems to be, I'm done spending ridiculous amounts for t-shirts in the bookstore. Family already pulled their season tickets last year and went single game. ND can afford to pay for coordinators, yet they refuse to pay their coaches after the blunders Kevin White put us in financially. Coaches should not be moving for lateral positions to a school that can't win their division and may never will as long as Saban is coach.

Wow. From the excitement of a bowl win to back in the shitter in 3 days.

This is Notre Dame football at it's core.

what is wrong with ND? we struggle to get the best coordinators and when we do we loose them to TAM and OSUs of the world.

This is just a further example that we've fallen from the pinnacle over the last 25 years. 25 years ago we were taking DCs from A&M, now it's the other way around. People need to update their expectations, or the school needs to man up and quit bullshitting their fans.

Right. We signed like 90 Rovers the past 2 years. Now what the F do they do.

Rover is the new Cat, long live the Cat Attack Defense!
