BREAKING: Stoic head coach shows passion and fire after big win, fanbase thinks he should "tone it down."

He seems over his head, just doesn't get it. Might have been safer going with Matt Campbell.

My goodness, ND should never ever consider hiring someone that says a championship is not their goal.

The OL should be flying sky high after what they did to Clemson. We've been waiting years for a celebrated group to actually show up and dominate against an elite defensive front, and they did it in a huuuuuuge way.

They should ride that wave to rolling over Navy and Boston College... but we've seen our extremely gifted offensive line lay some duds in run blocking against defensive fronts they should dominate. Avoiding a hangover against Navy will tell a very important story.
Yes, though I'd argue the defensive front seven is even more important in both those games.

Against Navy, we have to get their offense off the field. Possessions will be at a premium and with our, um, limited offense we can't rely on scoring every time we get the ball. So discipline, good tackling, don't let them eat up eight minutes at a chunk and come away with points.

Against BC, their offensive line is a hot mess. We need to overwhelm, create havoc plays and knock them out early. Longer they hang around the more they'll think they can actually beat us. Never let your punkass little cousin think he can beat you.

Navy's defense is smaller and significantly less efficient than even Syracuse's. With the way our OL has played the last couple weeks, we should be able to march down the field on them pretty reliably.

Doesn't Navy have one of the top draft eligible DEs?

Edit: Nope, thinking of Army it seems.

This Clemson game had big picture vibes all over it for me. Bring in a good-to-great QB and some WRs and send ND to the F***ing moon!

Clemson isn't that of the past, but they're still Clemson. And this was a total ass whooping in every facet of the game. Give me that OSU matchup with Saturday's ND team on the field and let me know who you think wins. Don't worry, I'll wait.

I'm not going to forgive and forget that Marshall and Stanford happened. But in the grand scheme of the program, if they sort out the QB position next year and beyond, I think Freeman is gonna be A-OK.

I'm as over the moon happy about the Clemson game as anyone and think it shows we may be legitimately on the road to - gasp - a national championship. We looked so damn good. But there's no way we can beat the OSU's, Georgia's, and ??? of the world without a passing game. With no incoming 2023 qb, there's still a giant question mark over this team.

I still don't think it's as serious of an issue as long as CJ Carr stays committed. We still have 3 years of eligibility with Pyne and Buchner, as well as 4 years with Angeli. The current top 3 QBs are in place until CJ Carr's soph. year.

IDEALLY you want a 2023 QB. Dante Moore and Rees/Freeman's ineptitude to close that or find a plan B appears to have prevented that, but it's nothing a Jack Coan-esque grad transfer or two can't fix.

It's not a dooms day situation (not saying you) so many make it out to be.

I mean dude I'm just so gassed up from the win this weekend that I think we finally have the pieces to beat some top teams and make a legit national championship push next year. Everything looks SO GREAT - with one gigantic red flag. With the way the qb room currently looks we're just going to wind up spinning our wheels again next year. A grad transfer is an absolute must. It's just frustrating because "just a QB away" was the talk for a lot of the Kelly era - but the team last night looked better than, I think, any single game Kelly performance

100% get it. I posted in a different thread this morning that the current trajectory of this team, with the way we are playing on both lines, plus the recruiting haul coming in, that a Pyne &/or Buchner led QB room should get you back to that 10-win floor.

I'm personally not ready to write off Buchner just yet because this OL has played vastly better since his injury, I would've loved to see what he could do with this OL, and he'll be another year older next fall.

But if there's a Jayden Daniels type QB grad-transfer there I think you have to try and get him. Might be harder than we think without a wide-open depth chart and a guarantee of playing time, but I wouldn't want a kid who's shy of competition anyways.

In summary, I think the perfect fit at QB COULD get you there next year but that's asking a lot; I think the real window for NC aspirations is Freeman's 3-5 years when these recruiting classes make their impact. Just my thoughts, I could be wrong, hope it's sooner.

Totally agree on Navy of course. We've all seen how they suck the life out of a game and make every offensive possession do-or-die if your defense isn't getting them off the field... But I was at the Cincy/Navy game Saturday. I've got no concerns with ND's front seven handling things after seeing Navy in person. My bigger point, though, was just that I'm curious to see if the OL played outside of their minds and above their usual limits on Saturday night, and if there is a regression toward the mean coming against an inferior opponent like Navy, or if they've truly unlocked a new level of play that they can sustain.

My feeling is that the OL is going to build on that performance, now that they put proof on film against a legitimately elite defensive front. I think they learned, in real time as the game wore on, that they are some badass mf'ers that can bully anyone put in front of them... But I'm still curious to see how they handle any potential hangover/regression.

On BC, I would argue that the secondary is going to be more important than the front seven. BC's oline is so bad that we are going to get pressure regardless, and Jurkovec is going to be running around and freestyling either way, because that's how he plays. The key will be the secondary sticking with their assignments as things break down. BenMo is going to have a few more chances to undercut deep throws if Phil J stays true to form.

I mean yeah man I think we could be back at that 10 win floor this year. I think USC just will not have an answer for anything we do between the tackles. For me to be happy with an Irish season I need an AP top 15 finish. It looks like we just might get there this year.

Unfortunately I'm ready to write Buchner off. Feel bad for the kid but he's played like 12 games of football since he was 15 years old. He's already just way too far behind, and his inability to put the team on his back and beat Marshall told me everything I needed to know.

I think in football you always need to be win now. I only played at the high school level (well, interhall, but I think we all know how much of a joke that was) but even in my town's program, "next year" was always the year -- and it never came. You never know when your star QB/RB/Defensive End is gonna tear his ACL on August first, and then your stud WR goes down with a broken collarbone on august 20th. You never know what can happen. You always need to be win now. What if, in (say) Freeman year 4 we have the team we all think is "the one," but it runs into a (say) generational USC team that is looked back on as the best squad of the 2020's. Too much can go wrong at any random point, and too much needs to go right for a football team to ever think anything besides win now.

Goodness gracious I hope this guy can keep winning football games. He’s so easy to root for. He seems like a truly, genuinely GOOD person, and it shows whenever he starts talking about ND and what it does for his players.
Totally agree but I think he may be in over his head-great man-but so was Jerry Faust. Hope he continues.

I think it is great he lets the coordinators do so much media. BK never let them do any.

The thing that has convinced me of Freeman's ability is the fact this team could have quit after 0-2 and for damn sure after the Stanford loss but he has them still fighting with really nothing to play for. That shows he has command of the team and they want to play for him.

Things you see at the game you don’t see on TV. Man Freeman was in almost every huddle it didn’t matter if it was special teams, offense or defense. The man was part of it. He hustled off the field back to the sideline. He is a leader.

Again you can’t see it in tv but was Kelly like this?

I wonder how long Freeman will be fine sitting around watching other teams poach his top recruits while the ND BoT gives him a butter knife to fight back with.
