Pelini was hired coming off the tumultuous tenure of Bill Callahan, where Nebraska went 27-22 in his 4 years.
Freeman was hired coming off Brian Kelly, who went 54-9 in his final 5 seasons at ND.
Pelini got Nebraska to another level that they weren't at prior to his hiring. He simply wasn't capable of getting them to that next level competitively.
If ND loses 4 games in back-to-back-to-back seasons, that shows a regression from what was there before.
That's why I say you can't just look at records for this kind of evaluation. ND was in a much better place competitively when Freeman took over than Nebraska was when Pelini took over. The expectations shouldn't be remotely the same.
My point was moreso that you have to be careful with this type of thing. 9-4, 9-4, 9-4 in Freeman's first three season would be disappointing...but you're firing a guy for that? Didn't work out for Nebraska.
It doesn't really matter and it's semantics, because there is a 0.000000% chance Freeman gets fired if he goes 9-4 and 9-4 the next two seasons. With next year's schedule, should it? Yeah, probably. But it will simply never happen.
