At this point, it's hard to see how the outsiders could have a legitimate reason to dislike him. He carries himself incredibly well when he's at the podium.
I will continue to say that I hope he truly is the person he is projecting himself to be. The guy is almost too good to be true.
He gets it. Wanted the job and everything that came with it. He's the best of us. Lou Holtz once said the school was founded on faith and belief. As a fanbase we've become cynical and are always waiting for the other shoe to drop. That shoe didn't drop last week in New Orleans. For the first time in over three decades. Coach Free has everyone believing again. The faith is back. It's real this time. This is not Return To Glory or Schematic Advantage. There is a genuine authenticity to this guy and the program he's building that feels very real. I hope it is genuine. I hope he is who he projects himself to be.
He started off his career 0-3. I think even the most ardent malcontent crybaby pant pissers don't even remember that. Or they don't bring it up and stick to the NIU narrative due to proximity. When he stumbles, he gets up and he pushes back. Hard. After NIU, this team has absolutely steamrolled their way in January. Semifinals. Will they believe the noise? Suddenly there is a lot of it. As much as I hate the cliched mantra, I think they need to remember for these next two games what was being said about them. By their own fanbase, on this board. By outsiders and social media. Go into Thursday as the underdog. Hadn't won a major bowl in 31 years. Nobody thinks they'll do it twice in one month.
Sign me up for all of it. Going for it on fourth down, running the ball, man defense, Top 15 recruiting classes that aren't sparkly, not paying HS QBs eight figure deals. I'm good. On the cusp of turning 47 years young and I haven't felt this way about Notre Dame Football in decades. It's a damn good thing. The echoes are awake again. This time for real.
