Boomers seem to universally adore Bo Jackson. Him, Barry Sanders, and Michael Jordan. I dont think millennials have anyone like that.

Not sure I follow the premise here.

I'm an old millennial. I grew up watching Jordan, Jackson, and Sanders. Also had Tiger Woods, Tom Brady, Kobe, Lebron, Ken Griffey Junior, Gretzky, and on and on. I feel like the list is very long of players who are considered either the GOAT or are at worst Top 20 all-time in their respective sports who played during the prime years of millennials.

They were all amazing. But for me, Barry Sanders was the most amazing. Virtually every game he did something that would blow my mind.

Tiger Woods. Easily.

Also, we had Kobe. Idk about you but every kid in school would yell "Kobe!" when shooting a balled-up piece of paper into a trash can. For his faults, he was a clutch player and one helluva scorer.

I think what he's trying to say is that we don't have any one that is as universally beloved by our generation as MJ, et al. A lot of people hate Lebron and a lot of people hated Kobe but that has been retconned a bit because of his tragic end.

I would say NorthDakota's point is a bit of hindsight bias. MJ is universally beloved now but I guarantee you there were a lot of haters back in the 80s and 90s especially in Detroit, Indianapolis, Salt Lake, etc. Time heals all wounds and people tend to get lionized as time goes on.

I see this happening with Tom Brady. Now that it's safe and the bad man can't hurt them anymore I see people start to give Tom his flowers.

I would say Tiger has quite a few detractors, particularly since the infidelity became public

I think it would be fewer than you'd think. I don't condone those types of actions personally, but just look at when he won the Masters in 2019 out of the blue, viewership was at a fever pitch for that tournament. He brought golf back in the 90s and 00s basically single handedly.

Ken Griffey Jr and Tiger maybe qualify for what im talking about. Im specifically talking freaks of nature that are universally loved and/or put on a pedestal. Not talking about talent level necessarily, just adoration.

Kobe played for the Lakers. LeBron chased rings. Both have a ton of haters for a multitude of reasons. Brady didnt actually become likeable until he got old. He may have achieved the status by going to Tampa and winning there too.

Gretzky is a boomer. I guess maybe older millenials got to enjoy the tail end of his career. He qualifies for what im referencing.

I like Florida State. I don't seek out their games but whenever I watch them for fun I'm always pulling for them. Like their unis and love their chant. LSU was pretty cool before BK but now I can't pull for them.

Tons of respect for OSU, Georgia, Bama, but don't cheer for them.

Florida State has historically been on my shit list.

My ACC soft spot is North Carolina State. Its gotta be tough to be them with Duke and UNC right there.

My B1G soft spot is Minnesota probably, Nebraska too. SEC is South Carolina and Arkansas. Big 12 is Iowa State. For the PAC (rip) it was Wazzu like any good fan of College Gameday.

We had Jagr for hockey. I think he would qualify, not sure I ever met a follow millennial hockey fan, that didn't love Jagr

Could definitely be true, I don't watch any golf whatsoever. My dad does tho, and anytime Tiger comes up he just instinctively calls him a fucken POS.

Maybe not. I think it was posted here by someone at an SLC BB game. The wifi network ID was "Jordan pushed off"

I get my love of the Irish from my Mom's Irish-Catholic side of the family.

My Dad loves Alabama because his all-time favorite player is Joe Namath.

So, I root for them unless they play ND or unless ND needs them to lose.

I also really like Army - I had some family members go there.

I HATE the following: Southern Cal, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, LSU, FSU
Totally forgot to add Bama as my other like. Respect their tradition as a program. Would love to see us play them more often. I guess of more of a traditionalist, not a fan of newer good programs like Oregon, etc. I think the era of Saban dominance at Alabama will be something we won't see again in this new age of college football

I'm GenX, the main generation that actually grew up watching these guys, and I don't adore Jordan. Zero championships and only one MVP until he got fed up and started juicing. Went from skinny to strongest guard in the history of the game almost overnight and developed a dominant post game, as well as insane durability and competitiveness. And though it's not his fault, he got tons of help from refs, not only in terms of fouls, but in terms of legalized traveling and double dribbling. The NBA knew very well how to maximize their product.

There was a decade or so when visiting espn.com was annoying as a Detroit Tigers fan. Every damn day, Tiger had one of the top headlines, and every damn day there was a split second where I expected big baseball news.

I follow VaTech (my mom's family is from just over the mountain from their campus) and IU. Soft spot for Tennessee, as well.

Trying to think of what team i could never root for, probably Miami, but USC is up there. Texas is also high on the list...no program does less with more than they do.

If you've never experienced it, it truly is worth going at least one time. And Knoxville can be a fun town.
Ive been to Knoxville! Awesome town. Though I was too young to enjoy the bar scene. Brother had a soccer tournament. Ill definitely have to get a ticket if/when we get a home and home with them again.

Yeah, no, I dunno. I'm late Gen X/prime age for Jordan and Tiger and I don't love either of them. Talented as hell, sure, but also hypercompetitive assholes (which showed up in their personal lives) who lacked the depth of the greatest athletes who came before.
For basketball, Bill Russell's my GOAT. Magic and Larry come next. And golf... whatever, but if you want an individual-sport superstar, Andre Aggasi is more compelling, and Tiger is no Muhammed Ali.

I thought Skubal killed that guy for a minute.
That clearly shook him, too. Wild pitch as soon as the unfortunate incident cleared. Just couldn't come back from that. Just an epic collapse by my Tigers. Saw it coming back in July around the ASB when they had a similar skid. This roster was never 15+ games better than the division, even before the injuries to the rotation occurred. No excuses. Just embarrassing.

I would say Jordan falls under GenX and early Millennials like myself. I grew up addicted to 90s Bulls. As far as Millennial heroes I would say Kobe and Lebron are the two closest, but they weren't as universally loved like Jordan was. Tiger Woods was there for a time, till he broke his body and his personal life went nuts. I'm not sure if there's a football equivalent to Barry or Bo...Bo had Tecmo Bowl which helped make him a legend. Tom Brady wasn't universally loved, most non Patriots fans hated the team.

In terms of being universally beloved, I would say Tiger is really the only one who comes close to that. Mainly because golf is not a team sport so there aren't built in biases. Tiger really launched golf into another stratosphere similar to what MJ did for basketball.

I'd say he seems to be almost universally admired for his skills, but I was unaware anybody liked him, much less loved him.

Kobe wasn’t truly appreciated by Gen X/Boomers until it was too late.

Somewhere along the way in his last season, my unbridled hatred for him turned into respect and a slight adoration. Many people had this happen.

Think we all finally realized he would be the NBA’s last true gunslinger, a man who would rather die on the court than lose.

There are tons of great NBA players now and the product is almost inarguably better than it was back then, but I don’t see any personalities that fit the old school mold of “I’m going to bury your ass for the next 48 minutes or die trying.”

It’s too amicable and passive in terms of competition. These guys are all BFFs and can’t put that aside for a few hours each evening like the old guys could.
