Always get excited about this every year and wish I could go. If it wasn't for finals, I'd be there to soak in the tailgating, atmosphere, gambling, and all the ladies hats.

So this year I turn on the television instead of studying for one of my last law school finals ever, pumped to at least see some of the sights and the race itself.

And there, all of a sudden, I hear a familiar refrain. A horrible, scary voice that I haven't heard in months. It couldn't be, I feared. No. It was. Tom Hammond, there to ruin the day.

And there you have it. At least the race was fun; just so happened to be the one part he didn't broadcast. Props to I'll Have Another, as in after listening to Hammond I'll have another beer.

Major bummage on the Tom Hammond haunting.

I went to the hundredth running back in '74 with a number of my ND classmates and my older sister who had flown into SB from Boston. I met some fine young Lexington Ladies, drank a mint julep or two, quite a few beers and passed a doobie or two. All while strolling around the infield gawking and digging the atmosphere pageantry. Oh. I also watched many races and bet on a few, including the Derby race.

I came out five bucks ahead and headed into graduation week with a fistful of phone numbers.

That sounds like an AWESOME time.

Seriously though, that is EXACTLY what I had in mind. To the T. So you can imagine my disappointment when the only way I can visualize it is ruined by Tom Hammond.

Really wish I could have gone, seems like an epic tailgate. Could use it right now. Finals suck, even if they're the last I'll ever have.

Awesome it was. There are stories that lead to more stories.

Just pass your finals and the Bar Exam. To bastardize a line from The Graduate: "I have one word for you, Chi, 'Contracts!'"

Haha thanks, will do. Going to be tough, but have to try and keep a good attitude.

Anyone else watching this year's race? Have a favorite?

The wet tracks always set me on edge a bit, I hate when they have to put a horse down. I hope it's a clean safe running.

I'll take Orb, but I really like Lines of Battle. I'm not sure about how the slop with him, but I think he is the best.

Good race, especially considering field conditions. I was gonna go with Revolutionary so Im glad I was unable to bet.

Although I bet on Java's War and Overanalyze and obviously came up short, Orb ran a great race. I'm disgusted that it has been five years since I last attended a Kentucky Derby. Looking forward to the Preakness in two weeks---it's my favorite of the three Triple Crown Races.
