Kentucky high schools told no more postgame handshakes | Fox News

IMO this is sending a bad message. Shaking hands is important at this age it should be teaching you to respect your opponent, as well as the sportsman ship. If they are having this many issues then they need to hire better coaches. And let the kids know that if they chose to make a bad decision they will have a o tolerance policy and they will be done playing sports.

I am so sick and tire of people not being accountable for theirs actions. These kids need to know that they are still kids and have to follow rules. They are making these situations worse for these kids as they grow up.

Agree. Suspend the trouble makers for the next game. Repeat offenders lose their privilege to suit up for the school.

I think you could apply this logic to a lot of aspects of our society over the past couple decades... ignore punishing the offenders and make everyone else adjust instead...

The KHSAA has since tried to clear things up. They aren't "banning" or "prohibiting" post-game handshakes.

What they are doing is clearing themselves of all responsibility by saying, "It's not mandatory to shake hands. But if you do shake hands and a fight breaks out, our referees will already be gone and your school will be penalized for not having control."

They are basically just saying that refs have no responsibility as soon as the final whistle sounds. In the past, fights have broken out in post-game handshake lines and parents/schools try to hold the officials responsible. KHSAA is washing their hands of the matter.

Yep.

And we wonder why these young kids will grow up with no respect and act like morons on the field when they sign with an SEC school...

Great point.

In all aspects of life...those doing things the right way are being forced to adjust.

I didn't even read the article linked above, as I live in the area and have heard enough about it locally, but the lead of the article is simply not true lol:

"Kentucky's athletic sanctioning body has ordered high schools not to conduct postgame handshakes in all sports following more than two dozen physical confrontations the past three years."

They have not ordered schools to stop doing it. What they've done is told the schools that the coaching staffs and school officials are responsible if something happens.

For the record, I'm not excusing the fact that it's been made "optional." Line the kids up and make them learn a lesson through victory or defeat. If they can't handle shaking hands, yank their asses off the field for the next game. If it happens again, they're done.

Makes perfect sense. It is the KHSAA covering their *** in case a fight breaks out during the handshake...they are saying their representatives (the officials) will be gone and not responsible to break things up.

Perzactly. Sh¡t happens, but the parents, coaches and athletes are responsible for minimizing the chances.
