#TeamKelly
I've been away from IE all day so I don't know how much I've missed here... but wow. This post hits the nail on the proverbial head.
I have been debating going on a rant here to explain how utterly disappointed I am in the players' reactions... but instead I think I'll just opt for a personal example.
Two years ago in a game against Penn State that our men's lacrosse team was winning handily... a sophmore midfielder by the name of Max Pfeifer went offside causing a turnover. This kind of infraction is the equivalent of an offsides on 3rd and 4 to give up a first down in football. Big deal? Yeah, sorta. But not nearly as big of a deal as fumbling the ball on the 1 and having it returned for a TD, etc.
Our coach, Kevin Corrigan, pulled Pfeifer out of the game and absolutely ripped into him. It was so over the top. I still remember much to this day as he was basically foaming at the mouth. It went something to the effect of "MAX PFeIFER!! God damn it Max Pfeifer. YOU HAVE ONE JOB ON THAT PLAY. One F*CKING job...." and it went on and on and on. Absolutely berating the guy in front of everyone. The media a couple feet away, all of his teammates, the other coaches, etc.
A weak, entitled guy might have packed up, quit the team and transferred. Instead, Max Pfeifer is going to be a leader on the team this year and one of our best midfielders. That is the difference between Pefifer and some of these whiney, spoiled players who have been speaking out on twitter boggles my mind. And football is supposed to be a sport for the strong!!!!!!
I am so disappointed. So freaking disappointed. These reactions 100% validate Kelly's point. Instead of respecting the coach, taking criticism to heart and getting better/ready to kick some ***... they start whining on twitter. Whining. Football players whining. And the comments were pretty innocuous... really, not bad at all.
If you heard what our hockey players, soccer players, lacrosse players, etc. hear from their coaches and how they react versus how the players are reacting to this mild "challenge" (if you can even call it that... seriously...) and it is night and day. Sad. Very, very sad.
But that's exactly the thing: your lax coach tore him a new one TO HIS FACE. The reaction of he players tells me that Kelly's little speech to the media was the first they had heard of not having Brian Kelly football in their DNA. And if I'm watching my coach talk to the media and I hear that, I'd be like "**** you coach, **** you.". Just not on twitter. None of us should have ever found out about this whole exchange.
I couldn't agree more. Do the majority of players even respect Brian Kelly any longer? This is all very embarrassing.
When Kelly does it on the field, crybabies come out of the woodwork to whine about how he is too tough on the kids. Do you really think that Kelly isn't getting on these kids in person, really?
Seriously, when are enablers like you gonna stop. I really don't care if Kelly is hurting any of the players feelings. If they aren't strong enough to deal with adversity, then they simply aren't strong enough mentally to play for Notre Dame.
What is embarassing is your incessant babbling about Brian Kelly. We get it. You dont like him. You don't need to take every opportunity you can to bash him. Its ridiculous. Add something constructive or go away.
Could it be possible that the reason why we are 4-3 is poor coaching? Could it be possible that the players have bought into Kelly's system and it might be the system that needs to be held accountable? Forgive me but did we just run 8 times in the ENTIRE game against USC. Could it be the Kelly doesn't have all the answers...and this underhanded criticism is nothing more than an excuse for his failures as a coach.
Yes, my coddling of the players on an internet message board is severely undermining their play. Listen, call me old school, but one of my key beliefs as an athlete is that the place for calling out individuals and classes is in the locker room. Not saying this won't motivate them, it might, but nonetheless, don't love the idea of dividing the team when talking to the media. And of course Kelly is getting on these kids in person, but I really doubt he has used this particular method of doing so. As for Manti, I love that ****. I hate when players talk about fans or cameras or playing for any reason besides the person on their left and on their right. Alarm bells were going off in my head all USC week. If the upperclassmen have decided to forget the fans, the polls, the tradition, the cameras and the coach and play for themselves and no one else, it will be the best thing to happen to this team. And if Kelly's comment spurs that, I will tip my hat. So you see, when I say I'd be pissed at Kelly if I were a player, doesn't necessarily mean I think it's a bad coaching technique. But he'd better hope the bond the players have for each other is strong, because they aren't playing for him, they'll do it for each other or the season is lost.

^ThisWooly can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe he is arguing that the perceived sense of entitlement of some players that were here before him is one of, if not the, bad habit BK is trying to break.

Wha...wha....what???
They play for the University of Notre Dame...Not themselves. Show a little freaking pride. If they were content with getting meat slapped last week, then they deserve what they get on down the road. Kelly's absolutely in the right here. Suck it up gentlemen.

I just went back and read all of your previous posts and have a question for you. Are you Dayne Crist?
Back on topic, I think there has certainly been some questionable coaching moves since Kelly got here but the "system" has worked everywhere else. Why not here? Why not now? Those were the questions posed to Coach Kelly and I think he answered them loud and clear. Furthermore, I think those answers were validated by some of the upperclassmens reactions on twitter (which are now mostly deleted).
In the last 20 years Brian Kelly has won 180+ football games. He has 2 DII titles, 2 Big East Championships, 1 MAC Championship, and 6 GLIAC Championships. He is 3-1 in bowl games and 11-4 in the DII tourney. He has been named the Home Depot National Coach of the Year once, Big East Coach of the Year 3 times, and DII Coach of the Year twice.
Compare that to where ND has been in the last 20 years and I rest my case.
Oh and you're not forgiven.

Could you give me the gist of some of these? I haven't seen any of them really, and I don't want to scour this huge thread.
That's just a distraction. The Army has commissioned several studies on what makes soldiers fight, bottom line is that when **** really hits the fan, soldiers do the crazy *** **** that's asked of them* and even die for the men on their left and their right. Not their officer, their brigade or their country.
With football, it's the same thing. Playing for the University of Notre Dame is great when it motivates you to get to the weight room in the summer. Wanting to please coach is a fantastic motivator on some unreasonably hot summer practice. But when it comes to game time, that's not what players should be thinking about. They should be worried about doing their job so that their brothers can do theirs. Not the fans, not the coach, not the NFL scouts etc...
In my opinion, the key to last year's success was the team circling the wagon. They had nothing left to lose, and they just played football. The trick is getting to that point before you have nothing else to lose.
*the studies focused on WW2, so it really was crazy stuff.
Welcome aboard, probie. Do try to post accurate statistics, though. One quick look at the box score from Saturday tells me that ND ran the ball 14 times, not 8. 14 is still not enough. But your bringing it up, and then not knowing the accurate number, makes people wonder if your views are worth much or are just uninformed speculation.
What is his record against Top 20 teams as an FBS coach?

I personally believe that "getting people to buy in" and "creating a winning culture" is purely coaching rhetoric. Did Gene Chizik have to get his team to "buy in" when they won the NC? What a team needs is, for lack of a better term, go-getters. Cam Newton, regardless of how much he was paid, was a go-getter. He had fire and pushed his team to win. He made sure the team knew he refused to lose and would not let them lose. We have nobody like that. Manti comes close, but it's not enough. Fortunately, the new recruiting classes seem to be chock-full of go-getters.

The elephant in the room is that Dayne Crist is on the bench after so much being expected of him the past 2 years and Tommy has played poorly versus Michigan, Michigan State, Pitt and USC. He has good games against the two defenses we were able to run on all day. You simply cannot win consistently with crappy QB play. But that discussion is completely off topic for this thread.
If you rewatch the game, you will notice the actual number of run plays, not end arounds nor swing passes, was 8.
