Audition? At least we’re using words that go with what college football really is. Theatre. It’s not really a full sporting competition. More like figure skating with judges and costumes and pageantry. I remember when people used to brag about how important every game was. Now it’s “every game matters, unless it’s an early season double digit loss at home, in which case it matters a little less”.

Might be interesting if more sports took this approach. April baseball games could be worth 25% credit and increase as the year goes on. Gotta make sure the best teams at the end get into playoffs.
This guy fucking gets it. Whole sport has become a cheat thing its propping up Bama, bama east (georgia), bama north (osu/sometimes hairballs) and bama west (rotating oklahoma/pac north/or texas). Everyone else is washington generals filling out a schedule.

You wouldn’t bet one nickel on FSU beating Bama today.

This is just a stupid argument.

Best 4 teams.

Sorry.
What? Bama almost lost to Auburn whose offense is worse than FSU’s with their back up QB and Auburn’s defense can’t hold a candle to FSU’s. Again all you are talking about is opinion. What the hell is point of playing the games if opinion and feelings are all that matters. People all talked about the playoffs making the regular season not matter. Well that’s exactly what this stupid decision did. You also realize that if ND was in this situation they would have been treated just like FSU to get a shitty SEC team into the playoffs. What was the record of the ACC vs SEC this year?

I honestly wish they would have put both Bama and Georgia in just to expose the bureaucracy within the sport.

12 team playoff with conference champions autobid fixes it so there is no use freaking out about it unless you're an FSU or Michigan fan. If this was a 12 team playoff it would be SMU fans freaking out about a crappy Liberty team being in over them and maybe Oklahoma mad about Ole Miss getting in over them. Either way, no undefeated P4 team is getting left out again.

A decade ago, FSU would have never had a chance to even play for it as well. It's just college football. Everyone is "Too much focus on the playoffs, go back to the split championships" until it happens and it shows why a 12 team playoff or even more is better.

All of this complaining, confusion over why Bama is in over FSU, the anger, the drama... all of it could have been avoided if the CFB Playoff Committee had just stated from the outset ten years ago that their goal was to select the four BEST teams, not the four most deserving. Oh, and told us that losing a key player to injury before the playoffs would be factored in too. Imagine if they'd just said that up front, repeated it every year since, and followed that mission statement over the years.

Just to be sure we all knew, they could've even had their executive director, Bill Hancock, remind us this past week that, "It is best. Most deserving is not anything in the committee's lexicon. They are to rank the best teams in order, and that's what they do. Just keep that word in mind, best teams." Dang, if they'd just done all that, we wouldn't have all this complaining and confusion. If only they'd told us that from the beginn... Oh. Wait. Nevermind.

Out of curiosity I just looked at the committee and the SEC is far from over-ovepresented. The committee chair is ACC AD. I believe there's only one SEC rep, and he's the AD at Kentucky.

I have no idea who is pulling the strings but hard to suggest the committee is biased towards SEC based on credentials and associations of their members.

This being the case doesn't change how fucking stupid it is and how it defeats the purpose of playing an entire season.

Again, if your team had won all the games but we thought your quarterback was sub-par, would you want to be sitting home watching other teams play for the championship? No, you'd be bitching that you got screwed over. Hell, maybe you shouldn't be in the playoffs because Koolaid went down.

But hey, you never have to worry about that because you're Bama.

Wetzel sums it up well. The greedy ADs collectively never wanted a playoff b/c it affected their precious bowl system. Then when they had finally landed on a 12-team playoff, they turned into children when expansion hit again. FSU should be most angry at their conference commissioner.

The people who designed a four-team playoff back then really didn’t want to design a four-team playoff — or any kind of playoff. So they did a terrible job.

They knew they needed to move past the two-team Bowl Championship Series. However, too many of their motivations had little to do with determining a champion on the field or setting up the most exciting postseason. Instead they were focused on protecting the bowl industry, maintaining the Rose Bowl’s late-afternoon New Year’s Day television window (and second-half sunset over the San Gabriel Mountains) and making a glacial move from two to four when a bold one was needed and inevitable.

Florida State was further impacted by the misplaced emotions of the commissioners of the Big Ten, Pac-12 and, yes, its very own ACC in the summer of 2021. Plans to expand the playoff to 12 teams before the 2023 season were nearly complete at the time. Then Texas and Oklahoma called the SEC and asked about leaving the Big 12. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey got the deal done, and his league will expand to 16 teams next season.

The other leagues began saber rattling and acting like every other league wouldn’t have done the same thing the SEC did.

They formed the so-called “Alliance,” which supposedly would create stability against SEC aggression. It was comical and ridiculous. Within a year, the Big Ten raided the Pac-12 for USC and UCLA starting in 2024. Later, they finished the league off by grabbing Oregon and Washington. The Big 12 and ACC then picked off the rest.

The ACC got played a fool. In the process, the playoff expansion was tabled until everyone calmed down. By the time the original expansion plan was finally agreed upon it was too late for this season. It'll start in 2024, with automatic bids for top conference champions. It's one year too late for Florida State.

It has never been the case before this year, even if it was “the rules”. Resume was used above all else.
Year to year inconsistency has been the only consistent with the committee.

Anybody with half a brain would know you weren't getting unbiased decisions the moment it was announced they would only be working with ESPN to release their rankings.

Beau, you're a good dude and have always been fair with me. I'm just going to leave this unanswered, other than suggest you give it a few days and read it again. If you still stand by what you wrote and want a reply, let me know and I'll try to give you a reasonable one.

Sorry if I'm coming off harsh. It's not about you and I get why you want your team in the playoffs.

Just think it's an awful thing to do to a team that did everything in their power to be in the playoffs and be told no simply because of a freak injury, and I definitely think your team and conference constantly get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to these things.

I again do not get why an undefeated P5 team should be kept out simply because they didn't look as impressive in their most recent game as a team that has a loss. I would be making the same argument for any team in this scenario.

Quite frankly I do think you all have a better chance at beating Michigan and that's the only relief I may get from this.

Like it or not, my team and conference have earned that benefit of the doubt. Bama has won 6 of the past 15 NC's, is 9-4 in the playoffs, and is 6-2 against AP #1 teams during the Saban era. The SEC has won 14 of the past 20 NC's, including the past 4. You earn some benefit of the doubt with that.

I again do not get why an undefeated P5 team should be kept out simply because they didn't look as impressive in their most recent game as a team that has a loss. I would be making the same argument for any team in this scenario.
The short answer is that FSU went 13-0 against air. It's a great record, but it has to be judged in context. Their SOS was 55th and with the loss of their star QB, their trajectory is definitely not up. OTOH, Bama went 12-1 with the #4 SOS, beat the #1 team in the country, and are clearly on an upwards trajectory.

Nice to see our resident Bama fans on here posting. Back in September their faces should’ve been on milk cartons.
What??? I've been here all season, no matter how my team was doing. TTT and I have been critical of Bama when they played poorly, and neither of us have ever gloated when we won.

I’ll ask you the same question since you believe (or agree) resume means nothing. If Bama’s WR had come down out of bounds last week at Auburn, would you still be advocating them to be ahead of FSU? Surely one play out of thousands in the season wouldn’t be the difference between them being better. So, would an 11-2 Bama deserve to be ahead of FSU? After all it’s about BEST teams not most deserving.

Ok extreme but they certainly won't be saying kids are out for season anymore and will be releasing that there's high probability of return etc
Exactly, the mere fact the results would be different if they lied are very troubling.
