Tampa Bay Buccaneers release Josh Freeman - ESPN

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released quarterback Josh Freeman on Thursday, league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The team tried to trade the quarterback but wasn't able to find a taker. By releasing Freeman, the Buccaneers are obligated to pay the quarterback all $6.2 million he was owed in remaining salary this season.

Freeman, who was taken 17th overall by the Buccaneers in the 2009 draft, was benched in favor of rookie Mike Glennon prior to the Bucs' 13-10 loss to Arizona this past Sunday. In 60 career games, Freeman has thrown for 13,534 yards, 80 touchdowns and 66 interceptions.

The NFL Players Association is investigating how Freeman's presence in Stage 1 of the league's substance-abuse program became public earlier this week. On Tuesday, Bucs coach Greg Schiano was asked by reporters if he was the source of the information and said, "absolutely not."

Freeman was fined twice in the past month for conduct detrimental to the team, according to an SI.com report. The website reported he will appeal the fines.

Boy what a mess this turned out to be. I highly doubt anyone is going to want to pick up Freeman and all his baggage this season.

No way Schiano makes it past this season. Guy has created a tire fire down there.

I agree. Apart from showing that he has no idea what he's doing, Schiano seems to be overbearing and a bit of a martinet. Take this excerpt from a recent article as an example:

In speaking with agents of several Bucs players recently, I have sensed a common theme: There is an atmosphere of fear and distrust under the current regime in Tampa. Players have told their agents about coaches roaming through the locker room (typically the players’ sanctuary away from coaches) and staff videotaping players on the sidelines during losses to single out players laughing or horsing around. The players also speak to the influx of multiple Rutgers players from Schiano’s past and the use of the phrase “Schiano Men,” a term that clearly does not apply to Freeman.

Cleveland needs the QB depth, that's for sure. He could save them from wasting another first rounder.

Also, does this mean Tebow to Tampa Bay? News at 11.

I'm sure Cleveland could use the depth, but Hoyer is the TRUTH right now. Love watching him chuck the ball. He's really in a no-pressure situation right now. He's 27, went undrafted, playing for a team that had the lowest of expectations when he was called to start a couple of weeks ago. I'm sure the pressure will mount if Cleveland keeps winning, but for now, he's in sort of a care-free zone.

90% of QB's are head cases.

He'll be picked up. I guarantee it.

Jacksonville is crazy if they don't. He's a huge upgrade to that dumpster fire.

I don't think JAX picks him up. At this point they want to lose and get the first pick.

If they really cared about winning they would have already signed Tebow. He's the perfect fit.

A lot of guys can ball for a game or two. We'll see in November what the opinion is of him. I'm not doubting, just looking at history.
