I guess this means the TV deal is pretty much a lock to stay with NBC.

Just looked him up on Wiki:

In October 2013, Bevacqua successfully negotiated a 15-year media rights extension through 2030 with NBC Sports for the Ryder Cup, Senior PGA Championship and PGA Professional Championship

In August 2022, NBCUniversal and the Big Ten Conference reached a 7-year agreement for NBC and Peacock to become the exclusive home of Big Ten Saturday Night football, beginning in 2023.

... while attending the University of Notre Dame. He was also a walk-on punter for head football coach Lou Holtz at Notre Dame

I assume they already have a successor because they wanted the next AD involved in the big decisions stuff coming up (apparel sponsor, TV contract, conference membership).

EDIT: Though it is amusing that the successor works for NBC.

Hm.. Not sure what to think of Pete. NBC ties scare me. He did attend and play football at ND.. I guess that can't hurt

More importantly, he played for Holtz. He should know better than most how the sausage gets made.

obviously there are the NBC ties that could make this interesting, but someone with very specific TV/Sports contracting experience has to be seen as a huge plus for the athletic department/football program.

Bevacqua won't be able to keep both jobs at once, obviously, but he's going to have some pretty significant insight once he steps into Jack's seat as it relates to NBC's situation in addition to the link with the Big Ten. Could end up being important down the line.

i think his point was that he should be aware that the football program is the golden goose.

Although, I dont know that playing for Holtz vs any other coach gives him more insight into that.
He was a walk on punter that graduated in 1993. He knows fuck all because of that. The way the sausage is made in 2023 is nothing like 1993, and any realistic ND fans understand that entirely. There's no halfway.

Working for NBC has probably shaped his worldview ten fold compared to his college experience at ND back under Holtz. That's why he's getting the job. Being an alum is secondary at best.

This seems likely.

Not sure what to think of this. I guess I’ll have to do some reading.

A lot of us wanted a football guy to replace Swarbrick so this is great news!

(reads that he was a walk-on punter that worked his entire life at NBC)

Without question.

There are quite a few ND alums who are currently Division I athletic directors. Most of these jobs are more about business than athletics today, so being an actual athletic administrator probably gets you to a G5 school at best if you work really really really hard for a few decades.

This guy is an NBC exec with a Georgetown law degree that went to prep school in Connecticut with an ND degree. He was the CBO of USGA and CEO of the PGA. LIke it was posted earlier, the new boss is may as well be the old boss. This job is about cashing checks and snapping necks. It's no different than being commissioner of the NFL or MLB or one of these P5 conferences. You're there to make money for certain people. The fans are not your priority.

This dude wakes up every morning and having played for Holtz is probably thousands of afterthoughts deep into his brain.

sounds like a corporate shill

but at least if he does anything shitty he'll have to picture Lou Holtz chewing his ass out. Maybe the fear of the Lou will hold him accountable.
I have heard rumors that Jenkins may be planning to step down soon (by 2024) as well, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

college football is certainly in a much different landscape now than 1993, but football wasnt and isnt any more or less of the golden goose then as now.

btw - sausage, generally, has been made the same way for at least 250 years (the hand meat grinder was invented in mid 19th century), doubtful that changes any time soon, just like ND football has and always will be the hand that feeds.
