it isn't a good short yardage package....you are lined up 3-4 yards in the backfield...yes u get more momentum but in short yardage u need the line to push and do so quickly...this just allows more time for the gaps to close imo

There are some aspects of the run and shoot in the spread though, depending on how you run the spread of course... in fact why more offenses don't use motion to expose the defense more often is completely beyond me.

Any kind of blocking back I would be in favor of... but that is just my core philosophy on football more than anything.

We might as well go 2 backs since we're getting no production from Theo in the slot.

Theo had a good game against Michigan. Don't give up on him yet.

I know, but his big catch came in the 2-minute drill. He hasn't made any 'slot position' plays.

I agree with you though, I expect him to show up soon.

ND has 2 good RBs so way not throw in some "I" formation or split backs out of the shotgun. Could be a run or pass play. The runner gets a lead blocker and on pass plays, the QB gets extra blockers and/or receivers. It'll give defenses headaches because an "I" could mean either run or pass, especially opposing LBs because the pressure will really be on them whether to run up for run tackling or drop for short passes. I'd like to see Kelly throw some different looks out there (like he did on the 1st drive against MSU, the Irish where all over the place & it was beautiful).

Our base set is Posse (3-1-1) which frequently shifts into Jet (4-1-0) when we split Eifert out wide. 80% of the playbook is run out of those personnel groups.

I don't think shifting into Regular (2-2-1) just for giggles is a good idea.

I don't actually think we should go to two backs, I was just taking a shot at our lack of slot production.

We only play 2 RBs so they shouldn't be on the field at the same time. Keep them fresh and reduce the chance of injury and just stick with one back. Plus it's working.

He had 5 other catches, plus another TD. And it doesn't matter that his 'big catch' came in the 2 minute drill, it still happened. In fact, even better that he did it under pressure (I swore he going to drop that ball...seemed like it took 3 years to get to him). We do need more production out of him, no doubt. But don't discount the big game he had, at night, against our bitter rival.

And despite having only 1 catch on Saturday, he did gain 2 other first downs on pass interference calls. So that could have been 3 catches (still need more from him though!)...

All I remember was BK telling us before last year that Kyle Rudolph would run the leprecat and I was so pumped at that possibility but it never happened. The wildcat is pretty much extinct now it hasn't really done much since the Dolphins broke it out to stun the wildcats.

I'd like to see some more two back formations. But not Wood and Gray. Why not run some plays from a two back formation with Riddick and Wood? Riddick was a RB in High School, so running the ball is obviously not a completely foreign concept to him. Motion him out of the backfield once in a while, and you might be able to create some very favorable mismatches in the passing game.

Theo as the slot receiver should be getting oodles of catches, but he just isn't. While Floyd is not always double teamed, he's certainly our most dangerous receiver and defenses key on him first. That should open up Theo to more one on one situations to get open, yet he doesn't see the ball. TJ and Eifert have been more effective aside from a couple big plays at Michigan for Theo. I like Theo, when he DOES get the ball he can do some special things in open space, but he has to get the ball first. Thats why I think he'd be more effective sharing carries with Cierre rather than Jonas. We know Toma can play, he was effective when he was in the game last year, especially when Tommy was the QB (Chemistry from 2nd team maybe?). I say let Toma try and fill the spot and see if he can still get open, or move someone like Daniels in there since we're not getting much production from the slot anyway.

The Leprecat? Is that one of those mythical creatures like the Minotaur?

He was a RB at ND his freshman year, too. Remember #32?
