Reading some the comments made on this board made me think what kind of fan base does the Irish have.

Some fan observations I see:

Blue and Gold to the core no matter what happens.
Blue and Gold when the Irish are Winning.
Blue and Gold when the Irish win a NC (have seen many of these folks, however watch when we win a NC- they will come out of the woodwork).
Blue and Gold however Coach Kelly is an idiot for keeping player _____ and calls horrible play calls. He should call me next time.

What kind of a fan are you?

I will start:
Love the Irish no matter their record
Get frustrate at times, and then remember it is a game
Recruiting ups and downs kills my gut, however I love it
Irish define Student Athlete (that is why i don't hate Stanford, Vandy, NW...)

I love ND no matter what.
Get very frustrated at at times. More than I should. But I always am ready for the next game.
Love the academic standards. Wish we could be more lenient at times to help with some guys. But I understand.
Recruiting is recruiting. Got to take the good and the bad. Just like with life.

Blue and Gold to the core except an hour after some loses when I try to convince myself that ND football isn't really all that important. Of course I have never been able to convince myself of that and am glad of it.
I never post after a lose until I regain my senses.

I'm a mix of the first and last. Although not towards Coach Kelly and decisions.... more towards the players. I'm a firm believer that "players make plays" and a coach just has to put them in the position to do so. It infuriates me to see guys have so little attention to detail sometimes. I hate mistakes.

Blue and Gold till I die. Didn't follow college football that much before I went to ND, now I can't get enough, and no matter how angry I get with ND, I can't not watch them play. I've tried.

I get extremely frustrated with the team. I don't presume to know more than Kelly, but I strongly disagreed with his treatment of Dayne, whom I met a few times, and the QB situation in general. I am, by nature, an extremely pessimistic individual. Very little goes my way without me having to go the extra distance to get it. So I usually post some gloom and doom, mostly after losing to scUM - there is literally nothing on this Earth that I hate more than the university of michigan. However, I inevitably come around to cheering them on the next game.

I don't follow recruiting at all - it's mostly a d!ck-tease until NSD. What I do is, every time a recruit pops up on the front page of Irish Envy, I click to see if they decommitted haha.

What I respect the most is the fans that have stayed true through thick and thin since Lou left. That takes commitment, and none of my friends who are scUM fans understand it. After attending and graduating from ND, I understand. However, I will definitely need to stop taking it so seriously. As you said, it's a game. But damn it all, I f***ing hate losing.

100% Irish, all day every day.

Well, except when the President gave his speech there. That was too rough to handle for a moment.

I sttod in the rain at "The Circle" as a sophomore (1970) with more than a thousand others, waiting for the team to return from LA (At 1AM) after a loss to SC (Which cost us a national championship)., and (As a new alum) I stood in old Tulane Stadium counting down the final seconds of the Sugar Bowl win over Alabama only 3 years later, feeling the elation only a national championship can induce. I was in ND Stadium in 2007, as we lost to Navy (for the first time in 43 years), and Air Force, back to back, and I most assuredly WILL be there (Wherever there is) when we win our next cfb national championship. I bleed gold and blue. My heart is on my sleeve, and my ND ring is on my finger. Always.

100% Irish here, all day everyday. That is what I always think about. Wish I lived closer so I could go to every sporting event, that I could.

But in reality I don't know anyone who would admit to the other options you have.

So, let me see if I get this straight.

You're on an Irish message board asking people to admit to being fair weather fans? Err, okay, good luck with that.

All IRISH all of the time.
I back this team no matter what the record, that's what makes a true fan. Sure I get disapointed and frustrated from time to time, but if being a ND fan was easy then everyone would be doing it! no matter what our record is, I love football season every year.

As with everyone else I'm there for the Irish til I die. There are times I try to convince myself otherwise, but it isn't possible. ND will always be with me. I wouldn't want it any other way!!!

100% for my University. I would not be where I am today without my Notre Dame degree and thank God for that everyday. Our football team should be a reflection of who we are...expect tough, resilient, men...men of integrity and honor who love Notre Dame.

And I hate the "sky is falling" fan base.

I think most here are fans no matter what right? Unless you define fan as always thinking notre dame is unbeatable.

I'm a die hard for life, but I'm definitely not some fan that openly expects to beat the 85 bears every given Saturday. Very much a realist, but I hugely devoted fan regardless

Loved Notre Dame football since, at age 12, I went to the 1990 Stanford game. Didn't much matter that the #1 team in the country get knocked off by nobodies. I was hooked.
Then I was a student in the Davie years, and quickly realized this football thing wasn't all wins and roses. Didn't matter, though. Still hooked hard.
Since then, I make it to a game or two a year. Stand and yell as much as I can. Hardly ever miss on TV. Generally optimistic, tempered with the realism that college football has changed a lot since I was 12, and we can't just strap on the gold helmet and win 10 games. Proud that my university tries to do things the right way (and respect other universities that do the same). Willing to be patient with coaches, and try to think the best of players. Shake my head at NDNation.

This is a very interesting time to be a Notre Dame fan. Kelly is putting the pieces in place. And I'm enough of an optimist to believe it will pay off sometime soon.

Irish to the core. Wins/losses, I'm still Irish.
This-and waiting for college football to become college again. I'm in for a set of rules that stops conferences and teams from becoming minor league pro football.

Just got accepted into ND for the coming year, so I had never been an Irish fan before last year when I started looking at schools and fell in love with Notre Dame. I guess that makes me a bit of a rookie by everyone else's standards around here. However, I love college football- raised in Iowa (go Cyclones!) and I'm very, very excited for the next 4 years of Irish football and beyond.

Congratulations, the next four years will be great. Welcome to the fan club.
