PUSHING TOWARDS A GREAT BASKETBALL ENVIRONMENT — THOUGHTS ON THE CU HOOPS EXPERIENCE AFTER A BASKETBALL ROADTRIP - BuffsBlog.com

I stumbled upon this blog post that compares the CU basketball environment to that at Notre Dame (as well as Iowa City and Michigan). I always think these kinds of cross-comparisons are interesting, particularly to hear other fans perspectives.....
A thread about outside perspectives on the Joyce Arena from a poster named Joyce Arena Joe...

LOL. My bad.

What I mean is that the outside perspective comes from a non-Domer, a guy that writes for a Colorado blog. That's it.

What's wrong with the arena? It's big enough for ND's needs, no? My dad and I inadvertently walked inside while exploring campus. Seemed like an unassuming but good venue.

Played at Joyce in 1986 to start the season. A few memories.

Got off the bus and wanted to head back south as it was cold even though it was November.
Digger was larger than life to us.
David Rivers was a beast. As was Donald Royal.
Fans was fairly friendly... the grey haired section was quite large.
The arena was smaller than I imagined it would be.
Nothing really stood out but nothing was really wrong either. Felt like it was a pretty good place to play.
Yes... we won but the Irish ended up going farther in the NCAA tourney. We lost to Syracuse in the 2nd round... oddly enough at the Carrier Dome.

Who did you play for sir? That's pretty cool. I'm 33 so ND has never been great, but had a few good teams in my lifetime. My dad doesn't care about ND basketball at all, but he adores Digger. What was so special about him that a random Gen X dude would kiss his sandals?

Western Ky.

Digger was Digger. He was a great coach IMO and he kept everyone on their toes with his sideline demeanor. We would see him on tv but to actually see him in person was pretty big for us. Although he didn't have the success in the NCAA tourney that he probably should have had, he put a really solid team on the floor most years and won a ton of games.

Last ND basketball game I saw at Joyce Harangody was playing and the “big screen” rolled down from the arena ceiling.
