I'm sorry for sounding like a Chicago basher. There are good and bad things about most cities and Chicago has some great ones. Unfortunately they're faced with terrible gang violence issues and yes O'Hare sucks, but I also associate Chicago with da Bear's, da Cubs, Hot Dogs and their fantasy of having good pizza :) My wife loves the mile and I like the old sports stadiums.

Any who, I apologize for sounding like a hater. I hear it all the time about my city and state.

Go Giants! Go Niners! Go Irish!

Pizza is like this:

You might be more comfortable/familiar with one particular kind of culture, but thank God there are many others to experience and learn from.

All the above stated places have great pizza. Giordanos isn't a slouch either.
HOME - Giordano's Famous Chicago Pizza

Also, if you are into legit jazz music, check out the Green Mill. This is only if you are about the music though, because it's definitely a no-frills type of place with tons of history. They will shush you if you are making noise. It's that kind of place.

So much to do in Chicago. You won't be bored.

Portillo's is amazing. I eat there every time I'm in the city.

Anyone banging it for it's "roughness" has no idea. I've never had a problem in Chicago. It's a pretty awesome place.

Portillos is overrated, IMO. Their cake shake is awesome but besides that you can find better food elsewhere.

Bob.... I don't think that there is a sane person in this place that believes that you have ever "hated" anything in your life. ha! You're a good dude, Bob. We all know that.

That being said, you're right about every city having good and bad. People forget sometimes how big Chicago is. It's the third biggest city in the country. So there is bound to be bad parts of towns and/or bad people. The same goes for cities like LA and NYC. All three of which are three of the finest cities in the world. Filled with culture, art and great people. Everybody should experience all three at some point in their life.

Also... I'm not a fan of San Fran's airport. Do you still have to get on a bus to transfer terminals?

I'm not a fan of San Fran's ass grabbers.

But hey that's just me.

No lisp on the ssss's.

J/K all jokes aside San Fran is bad ass. Love that city too.

The smell of the embarcedero (misspell?) is special. The sea lions at the end of the pier and Alcatraz...

So much history in our big cities of 'Merica.

Oh yeah, the Coit, or Coyt Tower and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Love it.

Cross the bridge when SF overwhelms you with stimulus overload. Take in Marin County.

Wish you had better weather bud. This time of year it is a crap shoot.

Haha yeah it is. Woke up this morning to see an inch of snow on the ground. Oh well. It didn't stop us from doing anything.

Went this weekend. First time actually going out. Had a great time. Cant wait to go back. Wish I had a smart phone, would have known you were there too. Could have met up
PROS
Never felt threatened, actually felt way safer than St. Louis.
People for the most part were nice.
Everything was way clean for a major city
Didn't have to pay a cover at a single bar.
Bean was cool.
Tons to do within walking distance
The Band UFC was awesome. Maybe I was smashed but I felt like they were the best show I have seen in a while.
CONS
Pizza was ok. Nothing compared to IMOS
Weather=garbage
Parking
Cubs

Come back in summer for the Taste of Chicago. Awesome event.

This and BluesFest, plus any number of street festivals nearly every weekend. I love Chicago through and through, and have lived here my whole life, but summer in Chicago is hard to top. Like someone said above, it can be a humid sweatbox, but the true nature of the city comes out in full force from like April-September.

Wrigley, bars, beaches, restaurants, etc. It's still fun now, even with the unpredictable nasty winter/early spring weather, so I hope the OP is having a great time visiting the city. But once it gets warm, it's almost like Chicago residents try to make up for lost time. I love it.

Recommendations: bars in different neighborhoods to get a true feel for the city (like Wrigleyville, Wicker Park, River North, etc.); deep dish and Chicago style dogs (Gino's, Portillos, Kuma's Corner for amazing burgers); great bars serving amazing craft beer (Clark Street Ale House, Sheffield's, two of my personal favorites); the architecture boat tours are sweet; museums of course are world class. Also - nearly any sporting event here is awesome, but if you can catch a Hawks game do it. The atmosphere is fun as hell.

There's a ton more. Have a blast.

Im glad I saw this thread pop up on my home page. I just received a job offer in Chicago and Im moving there in 2 weeks. Im looking for an apartment in the Lakeview area. Any suggestions from any of the local boys as to the quickest way to find a place? Id rather not pay for an agent.

I know a few people that found places just from searching and on Craigslist, which seems strange but isn't that bad, even if searching through Craigslist is a huge pain in the ass.

I would find an apartment searcher though, they usually are free. The lady I used found me a badass place literally across the street from Wrigley a few years ago. Wish I still lived there actually. You can PM me if you want her name, I'm not sure if I still have her number.

But yeah, apartment finders, places like that, are usually legit and don't charge.

Also sometimes driving around the neighborhood you want to live in is a good idea - you'll see for rent signs in two and three flats all over.

If you're going the Craigslist route, use livelovely.com. It takes the Craigslist listings and puts them on a google map. I believe they also verify them first.

Otherwise, I agree with ChiRish.

Great call, livelovely is legit.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice guys. I have a step cousin who is a realtor in the city, so he and one of his associates are helping me out. Im heading into the city Saturday to look at some places around Belmont and Diversey. Wish me luck. There isn't a whole lot available right now because most of the leases start MAY1 and a lot of them have ppl lined up already for the next year. I need to get in a place immediately, so I guess beggars cant be choosers. Oh well, im still fukin pumped to be movin to the city.
