I'm DVRing the game, please ruin it for me.

I wanted to start this thread because I'm sure this has happened to other people because it's happened to me on multiple occasions. I get one Saturday off a month and I use vacation on the "Big Game" days. I took vacation today for the game but didn't realize my wife was working 7-7. So because I have little boys, 5 and 3 I decided to DVR the game and watch it at 730. I texted everybody I know who cares about college football (Dame fans or other), with the situation. I waited patiently (it was hard), while I entertained my boys until my wife got home. I turned the game on around 745, I was a couple beers in, more beers in the fridge. I'm primed. Two minutes later I get a text from my dad who is on a cruise ship in the North Atlantic somewhere. He hadn't responded to my texts in days. He texts me "Sweet ND, wow! We got on the plane down 7-0, off plane, we won. dad," Holy shit, I was (am) so pissed. I love the guy but he's done this before. Who else has a similar story?

Not ND game... Stationed in Korea, the Dolphins playing the 49ers. Made it all day at work without anyone telling me anything. 5 minutes before the game, I go to the day room (common area in the dorm) to pop some popcorn and a guy walks in and says, damn sorry about your Dolphins man. That was brutal.

Saved me from watching an awful game, I guess.

I feel for ya. But I gots ta say that my sympathy is ameliorated by my old-fartage status.

"Back in the day" ND games were not always broadcast live or streamed. Radio coverage was sporadic and sketchy.

I tried to ignore the sports page, but "religiously" watched the Sunday recaps, regardless of outcome. "Moving to further action" was my ND football life.

That's how it's done.

Worked nights for about three years.
I got really good at avoiding scores.

The worst thing that happened to me spoiled score-wise was the Blackhawks 2010 Cup winner.
Usually I'd get up around midnight to go to work, but this time I planned on getting up a couple hours early to watch the game (fast forwarding through commercials and intermissions) before heading off.
Well, needless to say, the score was spoiled when most of my neighbors started setting off fireworks and screaming in the streets.

All is not what it seems. With age comes (mayhap) wisdom.

Advancing age does not preclude learning and observation.

It is what it is.

"All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players.
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
Then, the whining school-boy with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then, a soldier,
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden, and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then, the justice,
In fair round belly, with a good capon lined,
With eyes severe, and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws, and modern instances,
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slippered pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side,
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything."

I was out hunting today and just got home and was ready to sit down and watch the game... I recorded the pregame instead of the actual game... FML.

I had to coordinate volunteers at my kids school. There was no way I could get away from there before 6. Catholic school , so more than a few ND fans. I threatened death to anyone that told me the score. Turned off my phone. Made it home about 7. Watched the game without commercials and halftime bs. It was awesome.

Going to happen this year. I am going to the Blackhawks game on the 18th.... Yes, October 18th. I am gonna hate my life and I loveeeeeeee my Blackhawks but not as much as I love Notre Dame.

Everybody knows how much I love Notre Dame so I already know my phone will be blowing up if we win and it will blow up even more if we lose.

If you DVR a game and truly don't want to know you got to "go dark". Turn off all forms of electronic communications. Don't have any conversations unless they are absolutely necessary.

Do you have the Extended Warranty that covers fires, floods, earthquakes, volcano eruptions, tsunamis, pissed off "others" and random acts of seemingly meaningless acts of mayhem?

Do you have Rants and Raves Replacement coverage?

Just don't keep your phone in your pocket if you expect it to blow up.

I have actually had friends fake ruin a big game for me. Of course ND lost badly, played terrible, etc. Put on a whole show and all. Made me so mad that I never watched the game and erased it. I went on being mad for a while thinking my friends would never be so cruel. It wasn't until I watched sports center that I found out it was a great game and we won and I was even more mad at my friends. Bastards....

rookie mistake, you never look at your texts.

I was waiting to hear if I had to work on Sunday. I thought I had it covered by telling everyone not to text me anyway. It's happened to me so many times in so many different ways that I started the thread to hear stories about how it happened to other people. I'm no rookie, but I'm guessing it's not the last time it'll happen.

I don't know where else to put this...and I can talk about it now...so here works.

Final Moments of the Stanford game...4th and 11....on the edge of my chair. EG gets the snap, and my screen goes black, and a message comes up..."content requires a password". Well my daughter was watching with me...she had the remote...and she looks at the remote, looks at me, and this horror comes across her face like I got a gun and she doesn't know the combination to the safe...so she does the hot potato with the remote in my "general" direction. By then I'm up running toward her...it goes over my head...rattles to the floor...I scramble to pick it up, and bang in the parent code...screen comes alive again to .... a celebration and instant replays.

If you are watching ND football, you must command the helm (hold the remote). If you have Satellite TV always add the extra 30 minutes on the end of recordings, and make sure you turn off parental controls for game day

...The Alternative is spending the day explaining to your teenage daughter what the crap that came out of your mouth meant.
