My parents and sisters are all down in SW Miami. Luckily, they're not in an evacuation zone, so flooding shouldn't be a problem. They're hunkering down and riding it out at one of the sister's place. Hope everything stands to those winds. The house my parents are renting already has a crappy roof, that thing is gonna take off. Scary times

With the amount of rainfall expected, I would assume that ALL of Miami is under threat of flooding, storm surge be damned.

I lived there for a year and saw the havoc that even a typical, "minor" thunderstorm could wreak.

Hoping the best for them.

Just spoke to my son. They've ordered evacuation all around them, but not the area where their apartment is because it's not in a floodplain. The floodplain stops only about a block away from the apartments, so they booked a room for four days in Augusta. Packing right now and should be on their way in a little bit.

Nuclear plants in Hurricane Irma's path are shutting down - Sep. 7, 2017

Florida Power & Light announced on Thursday it will shut down the Turkey Point and St. Lucie nuclear plants ahead of Irma's expected arrival this weekend. The two facilities are Florida's only operating nuclear power plants. Both are on Florida's Atlantic Coast, which is bracing to get hit very hard by Irma's ferocious winds.
"This is an extremely dangerous storm," Rob Gould, chief communications officer at Florida Power & Light, told reporters.

Gould said the nuclear sites are among the strongest in the United States and are designed to withstand heavy wind and storm surge. Turkey Point's nuclear reactors are enclosed in six feet of steel-reinforced concrete and sit 20 feet above sea level, the Miami Herald reported. Nuclear plants also have significant redundancies that serve as back-ups to back-ups.

Turkey Point, located just south of Miami in Homestead, survived a direct hit from Hurricane Andrew in 1992. However, the facility did suffer $90 million in damage from that Category 5 storm, according to press reports.
"This storm has the potential to eclipse Hurricane Andrew," Gould said.

Well, my plan A has been scratched. JAX will be shutting down at 7 PM tomorrow.

No trip to MN – unless I brave traffic, limited gas supplies, road rage and, fatigue and hit the road.

"You can run, but you can't hide."

(Realistic) Plan B is to hunker down with my sister and her hubby who are at least somewhat removed from possible storm surge.

They have a generator (untried) that we hope works.

Bummer.

A week ago, I posted in this thread that you could crash here if you needed refuge. The offer's still there although Irma is now heading our way. After days of calming my sisters' fear in Wilmington NC and VA Bch they now appear out of this. We may get trees down and lose power for a couple of days (normal here for transient hurricanes and tornadoes) but we've been through it before.

We should get a couple of inches of rain and some wind gusts in the Birmingham Metro area. All depends how much punch Irma has left after playing Sherman.

Shame about your Minny trip. Best wishes to your sister.

Offer appreciated. At this point I'll play turtle at my sister's place and hope for the best.

I wish that a trip to MPLS had dawned on me earlier when tickets were available and the airport open.

Birmingham metro now within 60 miles of the eye come Tuesday as of 11 pm projected track. Winds should be greatly reduced by the time it gets here but there will still be trees/power lines down as our prevailing winds are usually from the west and we have lots of pines.

Went to Walmart tonight to pick up some scripts and noticed the bottled water was gone along with most of the bread. No panic in the stores but busy for Saturday evening.

Per the Weather Channel as Irma moves through the state, Lower FL (Miami) will have 8 out of 10 Tornado Probability.

Central FL 5/10

Northern FL (JAX) 4/10

I-75 traffic video at FL/GA border at midnight looks more like rush hour speeds.

Irma back up to CAT 5.

Still sliding to the West.

Update: Delta has shifted my reservation to Monday. I don't think it will happen since conditions will undoubtedly be worse in Jax then.

Not to mention that it defeats my #1 goal of getting the hell away from Irma.

I guess I'll hang on to goal #2, which is to visit me boyo ... even if it doesn't happen until October.

Last of the storm shutters will be put up today. All fuel tanks and filled, hurricane pantry packed, going to tie down my boat that's trailered at my buddies house and then just sit and wait. Hope I have power and or signal to watch the game tonight. See y'all on the other side. Be safe Dshans and everyone else in this bitch's path!

I may or may not work for this company but don't speak for the company.

Those plants are getting TONS of help right now to stay safe and have everything they would ever need on the station. It's not like Texas, where they let the plant stay online and the lone nuke plant kept power going. With the winds anticipated and the lack of grid connections going in and out, they will almost certainly lose offsite power and the ability to be online. They were still online this morning though.

I would anticipate being without power once it gets windy and then for a long time thereafter. Hope you got Generac's, portable generators, and water pumps.

Could be as Irma gets closer. Right now NBC is showing an auto racing event from Seattle.

The outer bands are hitting Fort Lauderdale now but landfall isn't expected until Sunday morning.

If the NBC coverage drops football try NBCSportsline.com I checked it out earlier today and they were showing Man United soccer as scheduled.

Rolling as a category 3 right now, correct?

Yeah, still hanging down Cuba's way.

Supposed to bulk up as it moves north toward FLA.

Irma had been downgraded to a Category 3 storm as it raked the coast of Cuba Saturday morning, but it was expected to get its strength back over the ultra-toasty Florida Straits and hit the peninsula as a dangerous Category 4 storm.

Fox an hour ago.

NHC 2:00 am Update has Irma at Cat 4 again.

931 mb

Moving toward the Keys at 6 mph.

For a week and a half I've been ensuring my sisters in Wilmington NC and VA Bch that Irma was not headed their way. It would stay west of them. Now the latest track forecast has it passing within 9 miles of my house. Nature has a sense of humor.

At EL 620 or so flood surge isn't a concern like it would for them living at EL 10 or so. We won't be getting anywhere near the winds they would have faced had Irma stayed east coast bound. She will be CAT 1 or less by the time she gets as far inland as we are. Tornadoes are a bigger concern here. Hurricane Ivan passed over us and dropped lots of trees. That's our biggest concern. They're talkin' 60-65 mph winds when it get to us.
