Win against AF may get us in...a win against AF and USC will get us to top 20

After USC definitely.

Wouldn't be surprised if we got the #24 or 25 spot after this week if we whoop them, and some border teams lose.

I think NBC would like to have us ranked for the game.

Probably two. It could happen with a win over AF but there are some 31 teams currently ranked higher in the coaches poll. At least 7 of them have to cooperate and drop in the rankings through losses or poor performances. And then the coaches have to vote honestly and not stack the deck with their conference cronies.

I have to say it will take two. We beat Air Force convincingly (by a lot) then we beat U$C, then we get ranked.

but seriously im thinking a solid/convincing win this weekend will have us 23-27... depends on what other bubble teams do

shoulda figured two woulda been the common answer. It makes the most sense. I know they got some ground to cover with teams currently ahead of them, just couldnt put a finger on if USC continues some shotty performances that the pollsters would find it as relevant as we do.

"They're" not going to believe we've stopped the stumblebumming until after we win against USC. [and Air Force first].

Depending on how the bottom half of the top 25 does, and how largely we beat AF will may get in this week, but if we win both this week and next, we should be in.

Well a very weak Penn state is ahead of us. That won't last.

Everyone basically has the right idea.

Convincing win gets us #25, if not? We'll have to wait till we beat USC.

I think a solid beatdown of AF will get us in. You know, especially if SC wins, some heavy hitter from NBC will be lobbying to have us both ranked for the big game in 2 weeks. Honestly, I think we should be ranked after AF if we play a clean game, and beat them by 20+. Our only knock was turnovers, and this will be 4 games in a row where we decreased turnovers, and didn't beat ourselves.

We should certainly be ranked at 4-2 with our strength of schedule. Most teams, at this point, have picked up their wins over joke teams. We've played 4 very good teams and 1 bad team.

Say we do barely get in the top 25 this week. The week off could easily see us drop back out.

I don't think you can drop out of the top 25 without playing, and even if you can, that action is reserved for school like University of Illinois, and Temple. Not Notre Dame

OK, I'm biased but ... Notre Dame beats MSU, 31-13. ... and MSU leads "other votes" in AP poll with 154 to Irish 24. ... What am I missing?

The thing that cracks me up about football polls is how polar opposite they are from every other sport.

For instance, in basketball and lacrosse (and I'm guessing most college sports) they evaluate/rank teams for polls and post season play based on quality wins. I.e. for basketball, they look specifically at your record vs. the RPI top 50. In lacrosse, you get no credit for going undefeated against bad teams... but a slightly above .500 record filled with top 10 wins will get you a seed.

Football has way too much politicking in it and teams that don't deserve credit routinely get it based on perceived "talent." Mark May went off on this today on ESPN about how Texas A&M and Florida State have no business being the top 25 except that they started the year ranked high so the pollsters give them tons of "benefit of the doubt" because they (implicitly) don't want to admit they were "wrong" about the team.

If MSU and ND (assuming wins) aren't top 25 after this week it will be total BS.

If we win convincingly tomorrow and if an individual player has a headline performance to gain even more press, I think we sneak in to the top 25. Maybe even as high as 23 depending on what other teams do. Then once we stomp SC in a couple weeks, we can crack the top 20 maybe even in to the teens.

If tomorrow is a close game (which I tend to think it will be) then we will still be in the "others receiving votes" list.

Not that i don't want to be ranked but we still have a lot to prove to our selves. We need to improve alot on special teams. We still need to get another WR to step up and be a big play maker. And until we beat navy we should all be very worried.

That's exactly what this is, and it's obnoxious. ND is better than most of the teams currently ranked. If only perfect teams were allowed to be ranked, it'd be an empty list.

As others have said, the Irish getting ranked is as dependent on them beating Air Force big as it is on teams in the bottom 5 losing. But, how likely is it that the unranked teams that beat the 20-25 opponents just get the bump themselves? For instance, if Iowa State beats #25 Baylor, ISU will be 4-1 after beating a team that is favored over them by 16 points. Unless its a very close and ugly win, it would be hard to believe that Iowa St wouldn't get #25.

You never know with rankings, but I'd say that the Irish should be happy with a big win against Air Force today and wait until after they stomp USC to get back in the top 25.
