Why should Paterno have responsibility for "finding out the facts of an incident"? The eyewitness was a grown man, 28 years old, who had already discussed the matter with his father and another physician.

If YOU witness a crime wooly, is it your boss's job to hold an investigation?

Is it his responsibilty to contact the police or YOURS?

If I witnessed my bosses friend and employee raping a ten year old boy, I would expect him to look into it after I informed him of it. I would expect him to do due diligence. I would be certainly culpable of going to the authorities myself, but so would my boss once he suspected or was informed about the child molestation happening under his watch.

Are you really arguing that he is not culpable to find out more about one of his closest friends indiscretions with children. Let me pose a question to you, if I informed you of one of your friends and employee of molesting children at your workplace. Would you feel responsible to get more information and ensure that the proper authorities were contacted?

If your answer is no, then we are just going to disagree and this discussion isn't going to go anywhere.

Clearly the best thing that could've happened here--and I don't give a damn about Paterno--would be that, well, nothing happened. Wish Sandusky wasn't a pederast for the sake of the children he molested.

However, given that this all did happen, I'm glad Paterno is going down. The guy is an a**hole of the highest order. I recall him saying many disparaging things about ND football, including refering to it as a "banking institution".

As the details have leaked out about him, his legacy mania and ultimately his egotism....well, I don't feel one damn bit bad. It actually confirms what I've always thought about the man. Pride truly does come before the fall.

I've reached my limit...I am quite fine with JOEPA getting his bloodletting in the media...but what of the media? Where in the Heck were they? This guy was there and attempts to explain the environment that allowed for Sandusky...w/o implicating himself...???

DeCourcy: Penn State football program was as much about secrecy as it was tradition, integrity - NCAA Football - Sporting News

IMHO Decourcy (representing the larger media presence in happy valley) is just as much of the problem as Paterno. Each contributed to the environment that led to Sandusky.

Paterno closing ranks in an ever worsening media environment thinking he was protecting his kids, himself, his program. Decourcy being part of the media environment that sought entertainment, sensationalism, and ratings above anything.

To look at either side with blinders you hear a compelling story for their conduct...Paterno, was arguably being paternalistic to a program HE created. DeCourcy, a beat writer with other places to go, and needing a paycheck until those other places materialized.

Alas, BOTH parties contributed to an environment that allowed Sandusky.

As I said, Joe gets what Joe gets...but what about Decourcy and the media? He/they were there too, and just layed down.

This article smacks of "don't blame us...its not our fault....Joe was simply too powerful"...ah yes moreso than Nixon then? Seriously, the media are disgraceful, excuse- making cowards!

If the situation were as DeCoursy said, with Joe running an organization of "Omerta"...where the hell was the media...don't your instincts kick in and say dig? Don't your ethics as a member of the media say I MUST DIG? So DeCoursy and his contemporaries never did anything but snivel? Thanks for that...those kids thank you all for that as well...

If these fools would stop taking the low hanging fruit, or better yet making it up where none exists, they'd have a nose for the stories the people NEED them to find. This scandal hangs on EVERYONE in the media who've allowed themselves to take a paycheck while engaged in superficial lazy, self-serving reporting. They dulled their own journalistic instincts, and are all, to a man/woman just as responsible as Paterno and the rest of the Penn State Community...PSU Admin, Athletic department, Police, DAs office, and the media right down to the beat writers...all of you failed!

Spare me the sniveling "sports writer" bit...they don't portray themselves as court jesters, so I have an expectation that their journalism skills extend beyond entertaining me. And had they had the courage to push back...who knows what happens. But all of them kept getting a paycheck, and kept accepting being shut down. How are they different from anyone in this story who contributed to the environment?

So DeCoursy does a nice job piling on Paterno...while simultaneously excusing himself and his contemporaries in happy valley from being frauds and a hacks. It appears Joe deserves a media blood letting for standing down like the other fools involved...but DECOURSY, don't you dare excuse yourself or your peers from the long and depressing list of morons who contributed to 50+ (and climbing) counts of sexual abuse...

McGloin's way too much talked about moxie may have gotten the best of him.

Reports -- Matt McGloin, Curtis Drake of Penn St. Nittany Lions fight in locker room - ESPN

well...so much for Bradley...if they were looking for an excuse, that will do him in.

I really think they need a complete reset...new staff. But they need someone who is invested in PA...bevcuase it is only going to get uglier. The more I think about it, the more I come back to Cowher or Wanstache being a good place to start over. I think Cowher has taken one for the state with his rebuild of the steelers...but maybe he's ready to play savior to the football identity in the state again...would be nice. the Stache...he's just a respectable guy who could guide the ship for 4 or 5 years and keep it clean and under control. Third tier would be Jim Kelly, Dan Marino...names w/no experience really. My sleeper knock it out the park hire would be Rus Grim...we'll see.

They really need a big name that can weather the negative PR storm.

Most big names are probably going to keep their distance unless PSU finally starts paying BIG MONEY to their coaches.
JoePappy's half a million a year ish won't cut it in today's world unless they go for a relative unknown.

Totally agree...the money will have to be upgraded Considerably...

I can see the Stache or Cowher not caring about the $$$ as much, but beyond those two, they'll need to pay very well to get a name...don't see anyone with any kind of track record taking the grief and huge expectations in Happy Valley for 500K.

So since we have a thread where we have to only have good memories of a child molester-enabler, this is the only place we can post something negative about a man who let children get harmed? Love the mods' thoughts on this.
