His "What was I thinkin'?" segment was about ND and their defense. He talked about how good ND looked against a true freshmen, and then went on to say ND will win out and go 9-3. It all seemed incredibly disingenuous.

Not sure if he really was thinkng about because he forgot about Utah maybe although we have them at home. We get no repect from that little mush mouth mumbler Desond Howard. I can't believe they can't do better than him to round out their foursome. His voice is still cracking like a little kid.

Ya think?

Only time will tell if his prediction is correct. If we win today I think we will... nope, I still refuse to make a season record prediction. But more than 4 wins (I'm looking at you NDOM!).

Herbie on Gameday Oct. 09

I thought the exact same thing! You beat me to the punch with the thread though. For someone that is usually a pretty good analyst, he has seemed extremely disingenuous towards Notre Dame lately. With the whole "high school defense" and now this, wonder what could be the deal with Herbie?

Could this be the old ESPN conspiracy or just spending too much time with Mark May?

Well ND has disappointed thus far. We could/should/would have beaten Michigan and MSU, but we didn't. I'm open to criticism from the pundits, but I expect, especially Herbie, to be professional about it. He's usually pretty good, and if I wanted a ludicrous and unfair perspective, I would go to Cowherd.

Read it as sarcasm...

He kept using the statistics from one game, so I take
it as either sarcasm or pandering...Tom

Yes! Actual picture of an ESPN conspirator in action...

Seriously though, I wonder if Herbie got so much fan(atic) mail from ND people about the "high school defense" thing that he felt compelled to be extremely sarcastic. 9 - 3 looked semi-possible at the beginning of the year but to run the table beating SC, Utah and Navy (hurts to say that!)...even Lou Holtz told Herbstreit to slow his roll!

herbie got alot of flack for the HS defense comment, this was his smarmy--sarcastic--assinine way of walking that comment back--actually it was total mockery. and in its way more insulting then the original comment -herbie is an ***.

In defense of Herbie, he realized he was an *** and that he did not know what he was talking about. Instead of being slipped a total defense stat by an ESPN grunt, it suddenly came to him that the Irish had faced three of the top 23 teams in Total Offense (and that his Buckees would be facing only one of them). And the Irish had held those teams to much less than they averaged (Mich aver.per play - 8.1 vs ND-6.6; MSU - 7.2 ydsperplay vs ND- 6.2; Stanford 6.6 ypp vs ND-5.3)

He realized OSU has had a cupcake schedule supporting their stats so far. In conference, Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, Minn, Mich and Penn State have some pretty woeful defenses that he would have to classify as "high school". (Do we need more Big Ten teams on the schedule?)

Perhaps the light just went on for Herbie, though, of course, maybe he still doesn't get it.

I'm usually pretty happy with what Herb has to say because he almost always is fair and neutral about it. But, he obviously doesn't like that he got called out for his comments on ND last week. Today's comments showed me he can't take criticism very well. I'm sure that he's hoping ND loses today even if he picked them to win. Hope he can become objective about our team again. He was the only one I really liked on that show and now he's gone and effed that up.

He did it because he expects us to lose... then next week he can make us his "what was I thinking" topic again and pound us.

my tin foil hat conspiracy theory is that he was being a john kerry. if he makes the prediction in the extradinarily douchy was he did, he can be right no matter what. i used to like him. that **** was weak.

Herbie is gonna start hammering ND more and more because he knows Kelly is a threat to the his beloved sweater vest.

Kelly is already starting to knock down that wall Tressel has put up around the state of Ohio. If the vest has to start actually competing with ND for the best recruits in Ohio, that's a big problem. Tressel has it pretty easy right now, lock up the best talent in state, then compete with the big boys for the best out of state.

It started with Hendrix, Massa, and especially James last year, and has really continued this year. After the big three of Florida, Texas, and Cali., Ohio is the next best state out there as far as football depth.

Basically, Herbie knows Kelly is a threat to his beloved Buckeyes, and is gonna do everything he can to make ND look bad. Suck it Herbie, you sucked as a QB, you suck as an analyst, and you suck as a human being.

I cound not care less about this guys opinion--- but---they are making mistakes as fast as they can. They are game but watching them is like watching a young colt feeling his power/speed. Its there but they dont know how to use it. They hit late and draw silly fouls out of pure intensity, they want so badly to make a play that they let a guy go downfield for a bad score, they lay back at the wrong times as a precaution, you can tell they want it badly and I believe it will happen. This team as much as we dont want to hear it is in an infant stage. They should have beat Pitt/BC by a lot. Herbie on the other hand is irrelvant to this process.
