Just keep noise-cancelling head-phones on for the entire flight and ensuing walk through the airport.

Don't look at any television screens... maybe tell your girlfriend that you are effectively going to be blind and def during and after the flight, and ask her to lead you through the airport as you look only at the ground. Perhaps put a leash on and attach it to her?

Don't turn on the car radio on the way home.

Lastly, have your girlfriend turn the tv on and play your tape recording before you enter the room when you get home. It is a near guarantee that the karma of the universe will have ABC announcing the score of the ND game at the exact moment you turn your TV on with the generic cable station still playing, regardless of what time it is.

This is essentially the plan. Pray that the Irish and I both execute to perfection.

Just tell her its gameday and you can't go.

This is the first thing I tried.. girlfriend was not amused

Let dshans hit you with his car.

He drives real slow, so you will probably only be hurt, not maimed. This will give you at least the night in the hospital. Free food, your own tv, drugs.... What more can you ask for?

Here's my ride:

I could pimp it up a bit to add a larger, more comfortable basket up front for a more luxurious ride to the ER.

I completely expected this to be about something important...and I was right.

I'm assuming since we've concluded you're poor that you didn't get cancellation coverage. I think the best bet would be what was recommended above, try to swap flights. Any reason you HAVE to be on that one?

Anything earlier we "don't get to spend enough time with her family", anything the next day is MUCH more expensive

I guess the two best things from this thread...if you choose to accept:

1) ND football, first and foremost

2) If your girl doesn't understand #1 then: A) you haven't set a proper understanding or B) you need to move on.

Either way, missing the game isn't an option.

If you really want to spend life with this girl you need to put your foot down now. Gameday is gameday...GO IRISH!!

UPDATE:

I convinced her to switch the flights so the game can be watched in all of its glory and entirety. I'm so happy I could cry. And yes, she's cool with it - relationship in tact.

77 days, boys! GO IRISH!!!

yup. and dudes that get married on holiday weekends, or big sports weekends are dumb as a bag of dicks. I blame them. most chicks don't know any better, but the dude... SMFH.

I think I've posted this several years ago, but my oldest son got married the evening of the ND USC Bush Push game. My sons and I along with a few other guys are in the basement at the facility watching the game when we get the notice that it's time to start the ceremony. After about the third notice we finally came upstairs for the wedding. As soon as they pronounced them man and wife and walked back down the aisle we all bolted for the TV. Pictures were delayed. It still comes up in conversation every once in a while and we all have a good laugh except then the ending of the game comes up and we're sad. lol

Just remember, she says she's cool with it and very well might be, but I guarantee you, she's gonna hold onto that card for a long time and when you least expect it, she's gonna play it. lol

My son is getting married in 2017. Initially he/they were shooting for an October weekend.

I cringed but said nothing about a probable conflict with an ND football game. Instead I pointed out that a number of his cousins are teachers and might not be able to attend since school would be in session.

My subterfuge worked. They're now looking into a mid to late August date.

Play them without them even knowing they were played. The youngsters always think they're smarter than us old farts. Old Guys Rule!
