Hammond and Haden

This has probably been discussed a thousand times, buuuuut...

Never in my life have I been more annoyed by a human being than I have by Tom Hammond and Pat Haden, the two announcers who cover Notre Dame Fighting Irish football games on NBC. Hammond is a moron with the most annoying voice I've ever heard, who constantly confuses player names (he once thought Barry Gallup was in at running back when it was James Aldridge) and words (the incident from the Michigan game last season: "There's a fag down in the endzone."). Haden is a former USC quarterback who constantly talks up the other team's players and constantly criticizes the Notre Dame players, and he's always comparing Clausen to Quinn and can't stop talking about how good Quinn was on the quarterback sneak.

God, how annoying.

They're almost as bad as the Dave Pasch/Andre Ware combo who covered the Hawaii Bowl.

Steve Beuerlein would be nice.

He would bring in that hatred for USC. Example ...

Steve Beuerlein - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (I would never source wiki for an actual research project, but this does provide the information I wanted to share)

He made a notable gaffe during a November 25, 2007 telecast of a game between the Tennessee Titans and Cincinnati Bengals: After the Titans' LenDale White and Bengals' Marvin White had an altercation that resulted in offsetting personal fouls, the Bengals called a brief timeout resulting in a commercial break. Beuerlein did not realize the break was a short one, and once the game resumed was overheard saying "USC thugs, man" over the air. This was explained as a joke which was not intended for airing. LenDale White is a former player for Beuerlein's college rival, the University of Southern California.[2][3]

This is the same Steve Beuerlein that called Floyd "Michael Tate" during his coverage of the Navy game last season.

HIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH!

FIIIIIIIIIINE!

Those are Musburger's two favorite words. He always seems to make them last as long as possible.

Yeah, but if he's covering them full time, maybe he'll get it right!! We all make mistakes. He's gotta be better than what's in place now.

Yes, I dislike both and would much rather have an ND guy. These are ND home games and NBC does not broadcast any other games on Saturday so there is no need for being neutral and not cheering for old Notre Dame. Beuerlein, Theismann, Pinkett, Davie, Roberts, any body but these two. How about Ara??

After Keith Jackson, no one can compare.

But my loathing of Haden and Hammond runs very, very deep. Musberger is horrific too. Why can we not have good Notre Dame commentators on an "ND" network? Pinkett, Aaron Taylor, The Bus, all come to mind for experienced commentators. I would love to see a trio in the booth of Aaron Taylor, Zorich, and The Bus.

Exactly! The next NBC contract should have some clause for new broadcasters.

I wish NBC would bring in someone with ND roots. Allen Pinkett or Joe Thiesman would be good.

Not likely to happen. When the deal was put together there was an mutual understanding that NBC was NOT the Notre Dame Network and the announcers would be independent of Notre Dame. Both ND and NBC try to walk that awkard line in a mutually profitable arrangement.

It's kind of like having your dad as you football or baseball coach. You think he's going to cut you more slack, go easier on you when you miss a tackle or let a grounder roll through your legs. Meanwhile he takes you to task harder than anyone else on the team. He uses you to send the message.

You're not going to see a Lindsay Nelson, Don Criqui, or Chris Schenkel doing ND games on NBC.

The rub to ND fans is years of Keith Jackson shamelessly promoting the PAC-10 and BIG-10 with their ABC Rose Bowl connection and deriding ND in a USC/ND game or a UM/ND game. Same with Musberger on CBS or the ESPN clowns promoting their league/bowl tie-ins.

ND fans expect to hear the same shameless plugs and digs from THEIR announcers on the ND Network. After all we talk daily grief at work about having a network and not even being in a conference.

Haden knows football. He almost came to ND. Keep in mind there's a producer in the van telling these guys to spice it up. As for Hammond regardless of the ND/NBC agreement and what the producer may be telling him in his headset is repeatedly unprepared for his job week after week, season after season.

Jerome Bettis is already on NBC, lets get him on it

Yea...Jerome Bettis and Mark May. That way when MM spews his ND venom, Bettis can be there to 'correct' him. ('correct' as in Mr. Grady from The Shining would say)

I'd hire Gus Johnson to do play-by-play to give him the platform he deserves. The old people would probably wig out, but he's fantastic. Might not be a popular pick but there's few I'd rather listen to. Throw him in there with a Buerlein (sp), Bus or someone of that ilk, and I'd be a happy man.

I like this idea very much, but I don't think ND would want the booth thrashed if they were to lose to Southern Cal again this year. Can you imagine those three in the booth, TV's flying, chairs being smashed, death and destruction to anyone who doesn't agree with them.
