Clinical - I work at a hospital so I have clinical specimens brought that are set up onto agar plates and analyzed for growth - then the bacteria identified to the species level and checked for antibiotic sensitivity/resistance so the doctor knows what to treat the patient with and how much it will take to cure the infection.

What technique do you use for species identification in a clinical setting? Honestly curious, I've only worked in an academic bioengineering setting, which is obviously a bit different.

We use a hybrid mix of old school biochemical testing (PYR, latex agglutination to speciate Streptococcus species, coagulase, oxidase, indole, etc) and relying on some newer technologies (making a 0.5 McFarland suspension of the bacterial growth as determined by densitometer and putting it on an automated analyzer to speciate and give an MIC result).

Also, for our positive blood cultures, we are able to take a small (0.1 mL) sample of the blood/liquid culture media suspension and run it on another analyzer that gives us an ID in one hour, along with any antibiotic resistance gene detection (mecA for MRSA, etc)

Lots of sound advice already given, so I don't have anything earth shattering that can magically make everything pleasant. However, given that I have a few more miles on me than you do, I can tell you that this isn't as big a deal as it appears to be this moment. Occupy your free time with something that gets you out of the house. Go to the park, a mall or someplace where there are other people and do some people watching. And I am trying to find an overnight caretaker for my son (just someone to be here overnight while he sleeps, basically a roommate who agrees to stay home on nights I work, in exchange for free rent and utilities). So far there has been no applicants so he is staying until I find somebody.

Which is even more awkward than it sounds, somehow.

ouch. very awkward. couldn't imagine things with a child involved. prayers and toast going out to you. lived with an X for about 2 months myself after a breakup 10+ years ago. rough.... in hindsight, I should have kicked her out immediately. in this case, me being nice and sensitive translated into 2 months of extreme drama and some scary moments.
