Herbstreit is confident the 2020 season of CFB will be cancelled:

"I'll be shocked if we have NFL football this fall, if we have college football. I'll be so surprised if that happens," Kirk said.

"Just because from what I understand, people that I listen to, you're 12 to 18 months from a [coronavirus] vaccine. I don't know how you let these guys go into locker rooms and let stadiums be filled up and how you can play ball. I just don't know how you can do it with the optics of it."

I think a vaccine will hit sooner, and I also think treatments might impact things in a big way. Too early to tell. We're in a new-new and I think we'll be surprised at some responses, but not ready to jump on the train with Herb just yet.

Just intuition but hints here and there about developments in testing and treatment PLUS the power of the economy wanting to end this phase REAL BAD, make me guess that by the end of June we'll have a different message out there as far as "normal" US behavior is concerned. (I don't know this, obviously, but medicine and industry is really hustling on all aspects of this. Even politics seems occasionally to have a glimmer.)

If you had an apparently effective vaccine or other treatment by the beginning of July, I could see those organizations invested with big money concerns "finding a way" to bring back things like organized sports.

The biggest threat to this hopeful scenario in my guesstimate is the stupidity of young people (as shown during Spring Breaks.) That selfishness portends flash uncontrollable outbreaks which will be difficult to get ahead of. The irony then would be that the same self-oriented idiots who want to have it all will be the ones most responsible for dragging this out so we can't have it.

A vaccine may be available for the NBA and NFL players and some referees ... but not for the fans to fill the stands. And not for college FB. To many and not they are not pros capable of making their own decisions about the viability of a vaccine. Legal issue for the schools that pros can waive.

Not disagreeing with you but i seem to recall having to get certain vaccines as a requirement to live on campus back when I was at school. So couldn't the school require the athletes, or students for that matter, to be vaccinated?

Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick doesn't want football games in empty stadiums

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick doesn't know whether the 2020 college football season will kick off on time or be delayed because of the impact of COVID-19.

But when the games eventually kick off, Swarbrick doesn't want them to take place in empty stadiums.

"I don't see a model where we play, at least any extended number of games, in facilities where we don't have fans," Swarbrick told ESPN. "College football is about the cheerleaders and the band and the campus environment on game day. We're interested in solutions that allow us to have a traditional game-day experience."

Chris 'The Bear' Fallica's best bets for the 2020 college football season
College administrators and some conferences are discussing potential modifications to the season if it cannot start on time in late August. Proposals include elimination of some non-league games and starting the season in the late fall and continuing into 2021, or not starting the season until 2021, which could increase the likelihood of having fans in the stands. Major professional leagues both in the United States and other countries are considering whether to have games without fans present.

Swarbrick, who participates in bi-weekly calls with ACC athletic directors, knows adjustments to the schedule are possible but opposes the idea of playing a full season in empty stadiums.

"There might be a middle ground where you say, the first two games of the season, you might have to make some accommodations," he said. "Maybe you only have students in attendance and you don't invite other fans. I couldn't see us going past a very limited example of that."

Other ACC athletic directors like Miami's Blake James and Boston College's Martin Jarmond noted the unique impact college football games have for students and the surrounding communities.

"A lot goes on football weekends," Jarmond said. "It's an economic stimulus for the whole community. It's not just us or athletic departments. It's a bigger eco system that football Saturdays impact. Think about Columbus, Ohio, on a football Saturday. Think about Gainesville [Florida] on a football Saturday. So I think that's going to start picking up more. It's a little different than the NCAA tournament. That's a financial hit, that's a big deal, students miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime, that is tough. But that doesn't impact a community like a football game does."

James said that moving the season to the spring is "a conversation we're going to have to have" if it ensures students and other fans can be present for games.

Swarbrick and other administrators also are monitoring how states are responding differently to the coronavirus outbreak. Notre Dame is scheduled to open the 2020 season on Aug. 29 against Navy in Dublin, Ireland. The Irish are also set to play games in North Carolina, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Georgia and California, in addition to their six games in Indiana.

"How does college football operate if several states are in a position where they're not prepared to allow college football to be played, but other states are?" Swarbrick said. "My sense is everybody has to be able to go. There aren't very attractive versions of this where you say, 'Well, schools in 30 states will start the season and those in the other 20 won't.'"

North Carolina coach Mack Brown echoed Swarbrick's sentiments during an appearance on The Paul Finebaum Show on Tuesday. Brown said that he does not envision a scenario where college football is played without fans.

"I don't think we can have football without fans. I can't even fathom it," Brown said. "That's not even something I think about or talk about."

Brown said it is important for athletic departments financially to have fans at college football games.

"If it's not safe for fans, it's not safe for players. They're going to be breathing on each other for four hours."

Burish's (ND provost) letter to the University community today lays out some timelines that could be relevant to football. 1st summer session will be remote learning only with the dorms and dining halls closed. 2nd session, which starts on July 6th is TBD. He gave himself a May 15th deadline for that decision.

So if Kelly is going to get his wish of a July 1st restart I think we'll know by May 15th. He could probably bring the team back a few days before school starts.

I suppose we could still get fall football with, say, an August 1st start to practice but it would probably be a delayed or shortened season.

Cautiously optimistic for the 2020 season. Just renewed for 2 season tix, which also allowed purchase of 4 guaranteed tix for Wisconsin. Kinda having my doubts that a full season will be available, but fingers crossed. The financial hit to programs and communities will be huge if season is cancelled.

I presume the school does require students to be vaccinated, such as smallpox

Do you know the name of a vaccine that has been approved for coronavirus or is on a schedule to be approved?

I'm not aware of one nor when it will be available. My guess is there will be no vaccine tested and approved on a timely basis for a 2020 season.

Social separation would be a challenge for students but impossible for players. The neutral zone I believe is described as the length of the football.

How do you keep the 300 pounders in the trenches from breathing on each other with 11 inches or so of separation?

How do you get social separation when defenders are making a tackle? Or blockers making a making a hole?

The trainers as part of the pre-game physical could check temps, etc but again asymptomatic carriers don't show any signs of disease.

I have been keeping up on the vaccination trials as well as prospective treatments since I am relatively high risk (asthma). I read an article recently that one of the vaccines in trial (there are many) that are showing promise may be available early fall as long as the results/conclusions of the trial stay positive. I will try to dig the article up. I want to say it was a UK Pharma Company that is collaborating with the CDC/FDA. The article said that if all goes well it would be available early fall for high risk, medical professionals, and first responders. You hate to say it, but if this works out, money talks and the NCAA and NFL will spend money.

Is it crazy that my favorite member of the program is the DC. BGI put out a 2 part interview with Clark Lea. You can tell he’s got a lot of confidence in this group to continue to play well.

The fact that News Is Essential and that makes It free, just made my day.

Clark and Tommy will be the future coaches we all can be proud of. (no matter where they end up)....

Of those, the most significant impact will likely be on 22’ QB recruiting. The staff has basically said they’d like all the 22’ options to throw together on campus. Since that won’t happen, how do they go about scouting that group?

Will be interesting to follow.

So anyone think this is a step closer to canceling the season?

No.

We are about to open our Rugby League football season up again here in Australia. Announced for May 28th. No crowds.
The situation in the US is a lot worse than here but if people keep doing the right thing it will get better pretty quickly as well.
